The Trump administration on Monday announced a sweeping new policy tightening restrictions for asylum seekers, in a move that could drastically reduce the number of migrants eligible to enter the United States in this way.

The new rule, which will be published in the Federal Register on Tuesday, would require most migrants entering through America’s southern border to first seek asylum in one of the countries they traversed – whether in Mexico, in Central America, or elsewhere on their journey. In most cases, only if that application is denied would they then be able to seek asylum in the United States.

Illegals trying to get here won't apply down there somewhere and try to follow the law. What this does though is stick a knife into the scamming NGOs that put out the bat signal you can apply at a "port" of entry.

Now over time it could lead to a good amount of people applying in Mexico, or Panama, or Africans applying wherever they happen to be in S. America. Lots of Haitians have been granted asylum in Mexico and are carving out a decent life.

Probably correct. It would be a little awkward for a Mexican to apply for US asylum in Mexico. Basically telling their own govt they feel unsafe and want to flee. So, instead, they'll still just make a run for the border.

A mexican can just move to a better part of Mexico. Very dificult to seek asylum from Mexico.

I guess Mexicans don't even try the "asylum" scam and just come across illegally anyway?

The problem with this is that the drug cartels are connected with each other throughout Central America. In some cases, a family are forced on the run by these cartels and nowhere is safe for them. It is USA or bust for them. Someone brought up the deal they did with the Columbian Government. The cartels were cut down to size, and the citizens do not worry escaping for their lives.

What. Cartels are in the human smuggling business. They make a lot of money off of it.
