Independence Bowl issues
The PAC12 was ready to enter into an agreement with the Independence Bowl. However, that was contingent on another power 5 conference being on the other side of the match-up. The ACC is backing out of its commitment as one of the conference tie-ins here in Shreveport and that could set off a domino effect.

“We were expecting that. The ACC has had open dialogue throughout the process. We knew there were a number of different bowl games in their mix and we felt we may be squeezed out of the equation. We weren’t surprised by the announcement and we’ve been very proactive through this whole time so we’ve had some discussions with some other conferences. ESPN is assisting us with some other opportunities so we feel we’ll have a good match up to announce hopefully soon but for right now we’re kind of going through the process.” - I-Bowl Chairman Art Carmody said they’re uncovering every stone trying to secure a great match-up for the bowl starting in 2020.

Exclamation RE: Independence Bowl issues
The only P5s which make sense to "host" the Independence Bowl are the SEC (LSU) and the Big XII (next to Texas). Shreveport, Louisiana is too are out of footprint (and not desirable enough as a destination) to work for the ACC, Big Ten or Pac-12.

Now it could certainly work for a number of other FBS conferences, like the AAC (Tulane), C-USA (LA Tech) or Sun-Belt (ULM, Louisiana).

I think they need to contract with one of those 5 conferences - and since the SEC and Big XII are off the table for this 6-year cycle, that really leaves the AAC, C-USA or SBC.

RE: Independence Bowl issues
The Independence Bowl, in the tradition of independence, could also contract some independent teams. This would be similar to what the Liberty Bowl did in the 90’s.

The bowl has been around a long time and probably should focus on a C-USA and Sun Belt tie-in. Throw in some independent teams starved for a bowl, and you may be surprised by the turnout.

And they SHOULD do that, but I think the NCAA rules dictate that an FBS conference sponsor/host is required.

RE: Independence Bowl issues
It totally makes sense to get Army, UConn, BYU, Liberty, etc...a slot bowl games

Actually several G5 Bowls ought to get together and rotate them through. Army and BYU already have some deals but it should be expanded.

The highest ranked team gets the Independence Bowl. The others at 6+ wins have contingency deals that give them the right to fill a bowl.

RE: Independence Bowl issues
Looks like the Independence Bowl is going to be stuck with a G5 vs G5 matchup for this cycle.

That can actually work, because if LA-Tech or La-Monroe is in the game, it will draw 40k.

Basically, since Shreveport/Bossier is definitely NOT a destination, the bowl draws well only when there is a team within a three hour or so driving distance. This means a Louisiana school, or an Arkansas school, an East Texas school, or a northern Mississippi School. Nobody is going to want to drive seven hour to go there, or stay for more than a day.

Hope it survives, as by today's standards it is a relatively longstanding bowl.

Am I the only one who doesn’t find Shreveport undesirable?

I’ve been there a few times and never had a bad experience. It’s not NOLA or Las Vegas but I’d rather go to Shreveport for a bowl game than Little Rock or Tulsa (if they had one).

I can see the issue of flying there though. Shreveport is not an easy place to fly to/from. But DFW and Love Field are just 3 hours away.

Do you know anyone who wants to fly in to Dallas, with the hassle that entails, and then drive three hours to Shreveport?

I do not. 07-coffee3

RE: Independence Bowl issues
The Independence Bowl actually started with a host school from the Southland Conference, before the split of Division I to I-A and I-AA. McNeese State played in three of the first five Indy Bowls, while Louisiana Tech played in the other two.

This bowl punched way above its weight for years. Its best years were when they had tie-ins with both the SEC and Big 12 and were able to match teams from both conferences. They did ok when they had one team from either of those conferences. In 1997, they had a game between LSU and Notre Dame. In Shreveport, that's as big as it gets.

Now that the SEC and Big 12 aren't sending teams there, the bowl is in a precarious position. There is no reason for a P5 conference to play in a bowl in Shreveport, other than to play another P5 conference on ESPN. The locals have no connection with P5 schools from the West or East coasts. G5 schools from the area may seem like a step down, but local G5 conferences may be the best way to keep this bowl going.

They can't go all the way back to the Southland Conference, but local and regional is the way to go for them if they want to survive.

It is actually drivable for everyone in C-USA West (except UTEP), plus Middle Tennessee. I'd like to see C-USA pick up another post-Christmas bowl slot.

If you like gambling, it is a decent option especially for those of us from Texas.

I LOVE the mystery surrounding Shreveport and history of the Independence Bowl. Few bowls have the charm of this one. Definitely on my bucket list.

It has hosted instant classics like:

Flying to Dallas is way cheaper than Shreveport and there’s more flight options. Especially if you’re flying with family.

Based on the last matchup (Duke vs Temple) fares between 12/25 and 12/27 (the game this year is on 12/26) from Raleigh to Shreveport on Delta is $368 RT with a 7 hour layover in Atlanta. If you’re flying American or United is $503. Dallas? 272.....nonstop. From Philadelphia is $388 on Delta with a 8 hour layover in ATL. It’s $548 on United with a stop in Houston and $579 on American with a stop in Charlotte. DFW? $222.....nonstop.

That makes a huge difference if you’re flying with the wife and probably the kids. Even renting a car and driving the 3 hours to Shreveport is worth the savings.

It isn't that bad. There is enough to do for a 2-3 day visit. The weather in December is kinda up in the air but no worse than places like Birmingham and Dallas.

This bowl should be AAC vs Indy/CUSA

I don’t gamble but I like going to casinos for some reason. I never had a bad experience there, the food is decent and the people are friendly. Their downtown is clean but I was told the reason why it’s because Hollywood films and shows use it a lot. Two days is enough with three being a stretch. Like I said, I can think of worse places to go for a bowl game or even a two day getaway.

Imagine some of the possible match-ups: USM-Memphis, SMU-Rice, Louisiana Tech-Houston, Tulsa-North Texas.

These are some nice games.

That game was greatness. Mississippi State, up until that point, did not regularly wear white uniforms with white helmets. It just happened to coincide with the storm of the century in Shreveport.

It rarely snows like that in Shreveport. For one night, two southern teams played in an environment more like Green Bay. And the game itself was great!

We'll always have the 2000 Independence Bowl.
