There will be an away game at Western Ill and also at SIUE but don't know the dates.

A low bar but that has to be the most attractive schedule in a long time for the home slate.

Taking into account all of the above and it's safe to say the "bar" under Monty remains directly on the floor.

Northern Iowa: 16-18 last year
Iowa State: 23-12 last year
Coppin State: 8-25
Rockford: 12-14
Longwood: 16-18
Oakland: 16-17
UC-Davis: 11-20
Pittsburgh: 14-19
UW-Green Bay: 21-17
SIU-E: 10-21
WIU: 10-21

Guess James Madison (14-19), Oral Roberts (11-21), Chicago State (3-29) weren't up to a repeat challenge after last year, so that explains having to face Iowa State and UW-Green Bay.

It's the best schedule NIUs has had in ages, no complaints here. Scheduling for a mid major in NIUs position is a tough tough tough task

RE: Any word on basketball opponents?
Northern Iowa had a disappointing season, but won 6 of their last 9 and had a shot in the air to go to overtime in the MVC title game. They have a top 100 player (AJ Green) as a frosh who will be a load this coming season. College Sports Madness has them as Valley preseason favorites : https://www.collegesportsmadness.com/article/17699

UC Davis had a bad year last year, but when that home and home was signed they were coming off a 22-11 season, NIT and Big West title.

I agree the schedule could be significantly stronger, but they're not purposely avoiding good opponents. Some of it is just scheduling regional opponents to contain travel costs, and unfortunately there isn't a lot of good basketball in the region. Would you rather see EIU? Milwaukee? UIC?

St Mary's had a 35 NET ranking so UI before NIU must think you are making this up.

Is there a required number of posts someone must start?
For the record: Did start a post regarding Korcek's obit on Robert Jackson, tip of the Huskie cap to men's tennis for their outstanding season --- among seven in the last 12 months. Not going to spend time listing posts that involved praising other posters, coaches, athletes, etc., because no one on here should have to defend their right to an opinion.
No, I don't believe Monty only schedules teams with losing records, but considering Rockford, Roosevelt, Judson, Olivet Nazarene, Eureka, IU-Northwest, etc. during his tenure, some of the focus is on wins and yet he's still basically sub-.500. And the home games haven't exactly featured the type of name opponents found on NIU schedules in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s. Yes times and scheduling have changed drastically.
Having much more familiarity with NIU scheduling than you might believe, realize it's up to the coach and AD to use their connections and those look pretty limited. How about STF doing "schedule-palooza" for basketball to give Huskie fans an added incentive to show up? During the course of so many unnecessary and un-warranted extensions, maybe Monty could've gotten a 3-for-1 with a lower tier program from a (to borrow a football term) P5 league?
Sorry, but not everyone shares your acceptance of what the men's basketball program has become.
And for the record and the umpteenth time, forget the UI references because I despise the ILL-ness, but unlike 222 and some others, I've never changed the name.

I’ve heard the St Mary’s game as well. Tough opponent. They aren’t a well known school amongst the casual fans but those that know basketball will tell you that they are a great program. The schedule isn’t flashy but it is solid.

Saint Mary’s finished top 25 2 of the past 3 years. They’ve reached the top 25 6 of the last 12 seasons.

RE: Any word on basketball opponents?
Yea St. Mary's is not a team you schedule if you're trying to rack up wins. They're probably the best team in California. It's an excellent job to piggyback what very well may be a top 25 game to the return game of the UC-Davis home and home.

I don't have much of a problem with his scheduling. Getting power conference teams to DeKalb is easier said than done since those teams are playing more and more conference games. About half the nation's noncon schedules have been announced and there's only one P5 home game for a MAC team -- Purdue @ Ohio. Monty did use his connections to play Michigan State but I don't know if anyone has the connections to bring Izzo to DeKalb.

Now if you want to criticize him for not winning enough games, have at it!

Interesting to see back to back games and 3 in 4 days at the Convo, although 1 is D3 (Rockford).

DeKalb High School would be the betting favorites against Rockford. Several good IM teams at NIU would beat Rockford.

RE: Any word on basketball opponents?
Yes STF has ignored basketball like every NIU AD has done since Groth left. The ADs are looking for their quick ticket out and have vulturized an already successful football program to get out. However scheduling is no ones fault. Basketball scheduling is an impossible task now and not only will good teams refuse to come to schools like NIU, they wont even return phone calls. What falls on Coach Montgomery is his inability to adapt his coaching style to the reality of his situation. I think last year was probably the first time he has ever made some sacrifices to his hard core MSU coaching doctrine and tried to coach to the talent he has and adapt to the offense centric conference the MAC was last year. Having said that, I am not optimistic going forward under Monty
