Canterino to start tomorrow
Matt Canterino will make his pro debut tomorrow for the Gulf Coast League Twins. He will pitch 2 innings or 35 pitches. After building up to 4-5 innings he will go to Elizabethton, Tn (Rookie League) or Cedar Rapids, Ia (Low A) to finish out his 25-30 innings limit.

RE: Canterino to start tomorrow
Matt threw well in his debut this morning. 2 IP, 1 hit, 1 run. Only needed 16 pitches for 2 innings. After a walk there was a stolen base and then his only allowed hit scored a run.

Matt's second start was better than the first. 3 IP, no runs, 1 hit, 3Ks. He threw 18 pitches, ALL STRIKES!

18 pitches in 3 innings? Wow, that's efficient.

It gets better.
3Ks=9 pitches+1 pitch for the hit
So 6 outs in 8 pitches.

I wonder if he threw a DP after the hit. That would certainly help. Consistently throwing strikes also encourages batters to swing early in counts. One doesn’t get much more consistent than 18 for 18.

No double play. The only hit he gave up was a pop fly just over first.

Heard from Matt's dad this morning. He said Matt actually threw 29 pitches yesterday. The Gametracker apparently doesn't show all the pitches. I wondered why everybody hit the first pitch. Anyway, there were no walks, and 29 pitches in three innings is great.

Agreed. Less than 10 pitches per inning is still excellent!

Canterino pitching for the Kernels tonight in the playoffs vs. Quad Cities.

Story on him here:
http://twinsdaily.com/_/minnesota-twins-...lver-r8355

Hope this year shows increased attention to analytics... The somewhat embarrassing/concerning pull quotes are below:

"And how is he adjusting to the professional game since completing his junior season at Rice earlier this year?

“I feel like I’m incorporating new things and (trying) to improve upon them has been the focus since I’ve gotten here,” he said. “I like the analytic side of the game. Analyzing how our pitches move, what makes good pitch combinations, stuff like that is definitely something that we’ve started exploring more.

“Rice did not have much of that whatsoever. I always had some thoughts about what makes some of my stuff play pretty good against hitters, but to see it in numbers form and be able to get concrete results and say, ‘this is what happens when I do this and this is what happens when I do that.’ And if I put them together to become even better, then that was something that we really wanted to address. I just feel like I’ve gotten to know myself even better. So, the organization has really helped already.”"

I had the same concerns when reading the article. Doesn't sound like the lack of analytics was specific to any particular coaching staff. One would think there would be plenty of minds on campus willing to help with such an effort.

If you recall, back when I sent Bragga and Mello the NY Times article on pitcbing analytics in college baseball (in June of this year), Bragga responded that they were looking at a number of the state-of-the-arts systems. They certainly have the money for it through either the RBI Club and/or the Baseball Endowment. It is also something that I and others I know would be more than happy to donate toward.

Canterino to start tomorrow
Anyone have some handy meta-analytics correlating use of analytics with program success?

I’m a believer in it, by the way. (Because of anecdotal evidence) Would like to see something more on it.

Last night in his playoff game Matt was scheduled for 5 innings. He retired the 1st 14 hitters, but gave up a hit, a wild pitch and another hit. His team, Cedar Rapids, won to send it to final 1st round game. Matt had 8 Ks, and no walks.

Here's a link to the Associated Press game story -- https://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball...70402.html -- which was "generated by Automated Insights (http://www.automatedinsights.com) using data from and in cooperation with MLB Advanced Media and Minor League Baseball."

@Ricebaseball just tweeted below with a pic of the analytic system on the PC recording the motion and delivery. I wonder which system they ended up purchasing....
