Miami football was pretty good when Ben Roethlisberger was their quarterback. The rest of their roster was not very impressive, but an NFL hall of fame quarterback covers up a lot of deficiencies in a MAC football team.

Miami, Oh Yeah! has had more poop seasons than good ones going back to 2000. They've finished above .500 only 7 of the last 19 seasons. Cincinnati football has finished above .500 14 of the last 19 seasons by comparison.

I've been a UC football season ticket holder since 2007, so I'm pretty knowledgeable about both sides. The crowds seemed pretty large back then, but winning does that. I was just saying, there are enough scraps left over in this area to create a good MAC team with a good coach.

The guy after Ben went to the NFL too and backed up Peyton, if I remember correctly.

UC's membership in the Big East and rise on Kelly killed their standing as Ohio's second best program.

The growth of Louisville and UK and the general divide that has the MAC at the low end of FBS hurts Miami OH more than other programs. Miami just can't recruit the local area the way they use to.

Miami thrived when the Big Ten was the Big Two and and little 8. They still did well when the divide between the low end Big Ten teams and non-power conference was very small. Now Miami OH is not only in a G5 conference they are in one of lower level ones at that. The MAC has very little TV exposure outside of mid-week games. Even in the American, Cincinnati is on TV and receiving way more TV and shoe deal revenue than Miami.

Miami has not thrived in decades. They have not had any sustained success at a high level since the 70's. The Walker and Hoeppner years were fine, but they were generally a 5-7 win team. Poor coaching and an administration that does not seem to want to invest in football are the reasons Miami has been bad to mediocre.

Other MAC teams have been able to find and sustain success in the current football landscape. Their conference mates seem to have things figured out, and they are all not in as good of a recruiting position as Miami. Toledo, OU, NIU have all sustained success over almost two decades while Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Bowling Green seem to cycle through successful periods with decent coaching hires.

I believe Miami's problem is all based on apathy from the school. As much as Martin gets flack, his regime has not been awful. I just don't think he has the resources and backing to make the program any better.

^^ Thanks for posting Banter. I had written something similar about an hour ago, but I went in to deep and decided to just delete it. However, as you stated more eloquently than I, Miami hasn't been what they were since the 70s. To illustrate this point, UC and Miami were basically even in the 20 games played between 1980-1999 (most of those years were the dark ages of UC football). It seemed like they dominated us, but the record was 10-9-1 during that time. Seven of Miami's eleven bowl appearances were prior to 1986 (they actually had an eleven year drought between 1975 and 1986).

Since 1980 the Victory Bell is 25-13-1 in favor of UC. 7 of those 13 wins came before 1993. Conference USA gave UC a boost, but even before that UC was still winning fairly regularly. Miami U just has not cared to support football in a long time.

C-USA was huge for UC. People take for granted being in a conference, but good players want to go to a school where they can compete for a conference championship, be honored for all-conference recognition, have guaranteed bowl tie-ins, media deals, etc. We had a few decent guys on the team in the 80s and pre-Minter 90s, but there was no depth of quality (and by today's comparisons even Minters team did not have the depth of talent).
