Agreed. I'm thinking Bennett gets red-shirted, but still gets to take some snaps in up to 4 games for experience. Win-win

Is Buckshot the starter at QB this year? It would be nice to see Buckshot start one more year and give Willis a chance to start in 2020 and 2021. A year in the HF system will prepare Willis for next year.

Depends on if Willis gets the waiver or not. If he doesn't, he'll compete with Bennett for 20 & 21. If he does, he'll compete with Buckshot for this year.

Very strange that he chose LU. He wouldn't be seeking a waiver if he didn't expect to be the starter here. Before today I would have been shocked if anyone beat Calvert out for the starting QB position. With Freeze as the new coach, no player is safe.

I don't see him getting the waiver. i'd rather have him for 2 years than having him mix time with Buckshot this fall. I don't see him beating Buckshot out anyway, I only see him coming in for a series or 2 as a wildcat each game if he's able to play this fall.

I think it's two-fold:

1) He believes he can win the starting spot from Calvert. As much as I like Calvert, he did have a lower completion percentage coupled with poor decision-making ability under pressure last season, & he's been the victim of different systems each year.

2) If Willis gets the waiver, we can have confidence that whichever guy wins the QB battle gives us our best shot at upending a few schools along the way this season. If he doesn't get the waiver, he has a much better shot at outright having the starting spot for 2 seasons with a year to learn Freeze's system first. Win-win for us.

I agree for the most part. As you said, it's a win-win and I want us to have the best team. I just think it looks bad to replace the guy who is/has rewritten the passing records at Liberty.

Calvert wasn't as great as expected last season but we still averaged almost 35 points a game with the majority being passing touchdowns. Our defense likely made it worse by putting a ton of pressure on the offense to make up for their mistakes.

As a side note, I can't believe all the QB transfers that receive waivers to avoid sitting a year. Either get rid of the rule or enforce it.

Calvert, unless he stumbles and does not adhere and blend in with Freeze's new offense has to be starter. The higher importance story here is how LU was able to attract a QB transfer from a P5 school with strong credentials. It's another step forward

I would prefer Calvert to be the starter but it's total crap that Justin Fields, Tate Martell, and so many others get immediate eligibility while Malik Willis doesn't.

Add him to the list with VT's Hoffman (ailing mother was his reason for transfer), VT's Burmeister, Illinois's Ford, Kent State's Knight (depression led to his transfer), TCU's Baldwin, & GT's Clayton. All of them seem to have what in common? They play for lesser teams.

But hey, the NCAA wants to be "fair"
