OT: Call BLocking Apps
This board is an eclectic group of consumers. Looking for recommendations to a good call blocking app.

Ditto, the robo calls have really stepped up lately. I usually get a click when I say please remove me from your call list. They rely on, and justifiably so, that most people will not go through the effort to file a complaint.

I have set my phone to only accept calls from my contacts list. Works pretty well and if any noncontact calls and it's important they'll leave a message. Yes, lots of Robocalls leave vmails but they are easy enough to delete.

I don’t think answering and asking to be taken off the list makes any difference. If anything, you’ve let them know that it is a working number.

Blocking the number does nothing either as they are all ghosted numbers.

True. I'll still block because it's easy to do on an iPhone and I imagine it can't hurt, but often I'll start getting calls again from a number a digit or two over from the blocked number.

Fairly certain nothing productive stops them, but agree that if you answer they now know it's a working number. Asking to be removed only removes you from the dialer, but this can be gotten around by having someone click a button on every dial so that it's not totally automated. My response over the last year has been to ignore and they have slowed down a bit.

A friend of mine received a robo call from his own phone number.

I've had a dude call me all pissed off because he thought I called him. I gave up trying to explain to the dude I didn't call him and my number had been spoofed.

Both have happened to me on my landline.

RE: OT: Call BLocking Apps
The FCC once protected the American Home from such unwelcomed intrusions into our private time. Those which were scams were tracked down and prosecuted by the same.

NAFTA changed all of that and terms of agreement on cell phone usage gave it the coup de grace. What have now become the prey in an international open season on suckers and your congressman, or senator, or president for that matter will do absolutely nothing about it. AT&T phone banks (operating under another name) in Mumbai profit no matter if you get scammed or not.

The best thing to do is hang up if the other party doesn't speak. They cycle calls out which appear to be inactive because it increases their rate of return. If you talk to them it only lists your phone as active and marks you as an engager which translates into more calls.

If you have talked to them for awhile tell them you are with the NSA and that you have stayed on the line long enough for the predator drones to lock onto the location. Then hang up.

Seriously, your best bet to handle scams is your state attorney general. Most are very responsive and mine helped to force Experion to be compliant in freezing credit at no charge after their leak endangered all of our information. Initially they refused without a fee (and no SOB should profit from their own ineptitude).

I don't have many people outside of el paso so if there's a number that I don't recognize I just don't answer. If it's local and someone I know wants to talk to me they can leave a message and if they don't, tough shiate. That's why if I need to talk to someone who doesn't have my phone number I text them and tell them who is texting then they know it's legit.

RE: OT: Call BLocking Apps
Look up your provider's version of SHAKEN/STIR, and how to access it.

I looked up the protocol then researched how to enable it from my provider. This protocol does a combination of things.

First, it requires that some sort of digital authentication of the source, and compares that the 'number to be displayed'. The certificate technology enables the called party to verify that the calling number is accurate and has not been spoofed.

If there is no match, it fires the call into 'somewhere' (I dont even see an attempt in my list).

It isnt 100 per cent, but since I enabled it through my provider I have shrunk the spoof rate from about 2-3 per day to less than 1 per week.

Sometimes it can be fun to play along and mess with them.

Going to voicemail also tells them it is a working number. No getting around it.
