Stony Brook, Albany, Buffalo, and Binghamton are all flagships in New York, much like the UCs are all flagships in California. But if there is a first among these equals, it is Buffalo.
And the Colleges would be the equivalent of the Cal State System.
There are no Cal St.s that are AAU like Buffalo and Stony Brook.
This is probably true, which is why I'm comparing Buffalo, Stony Brook, Albany and Binghamton to the UCs, not the Cal States. These are the university centers. By "colleges," I believe whittx is referring to SUNY colleges like Brockport, Oswego, and Geneseo. These are state university colleges, and more like the Cal States.

But I disagree with you here
SNY could step in & buy Conn & Mass 6 home games
ESPN gives MAC bump for their road games
Less wkday games improves atten
Whatever BB games or hockey games that can be worked out
I could never understand MAC position on FB only
I would rather have JMU all sports for #12 then UMass and/or UConn for football only. I wonder if any of those 3 would be interested in playing 1/3 of their games on weeknights anyway.

How does ESPN give MAC a bump for the same inventory?
If the ESPN contract includes the home FB games of the 12 all-sports schools and the FB-only affiliates keep their home rights ... the 12 all-sports schools have 48 conference home games, just like today. UConn and UMass's road games aren't a net add to the inventory of the all-sports schools, they are a replacement for the MAC conference away games that are going to UConn/UMass.
If that was the setup (whether it can be the setup depends on the terms of the contract, which I haven't seen, and also might misinterpret if I did see it, since I ain't no damn lawyer [IANDL^TM]), ESPN could put in a bid for the UMass/UConn home rights, see who makes the better offer. Then UMass/UConn would get the incremental ESPN payment, not the base contract payment, "eat what you kill" style.

Buffalo is a great school and I have no doubt they could compete in the AAC but they are way, way, way too far north for my liking, and I'm sure their fans probably feel the same way about Houston.

Also, the SUNY Colleges are all D-3 schools (only 3 of which play football (Brockport, Buffalo State, and Cortland)) along with the SUNY Techs (two play football)

I don't think the Buffalo alum think Houston is too far north for their liking.

UConn and UMass would make far less sense if Buffalo were to ever leave the MAC.
James Madison would make some sense. If I'm Jon Steinbrecher, though, I first sound out Marshall and North Dakota State. North Dakota State is an outlier, but the MAC probably makes as much sense as any conference for them. (And what a football program!)

Marshall and NDSU/NKU is my favorite expansion scenario. 2 FB fan bases that would invigorate passion across the league. NDSU could keep its sports in the Summit.

New owner's wife has local roots (From Rochester) aowned the Sabres, so they were seen as the white knights saving the team.

They need to move the Bills to Toronto
[/quote]
There is a little legal fact. In the 70's the WFL announced they were putting a team in Toronto Northmen. The CFL got Canada to pass a law not allowing a U.S. Team to expand into Canada because of fear that it would destroy the CFL. The Northmen become the Memphis Southmen. The Bills are limited to only a few games. Vince Of the XFL almost purchased the CFL. Who knows the XFL may one day include the CFL. The law also states the league must be headquartered in Canada
