Rolleyes Aresco discusses Buffalo to the AAC
Quote:At first glance, UB would appear to be a fit for the AAC. It is an Association of American Universities school (one of 62 top research universities in the United States and Canada) with an enrollment of about 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students that’s located in the northeast. The success of its men’s and women’s basketball teams has elevated its brand, and the football program had its most successful season in 2018.

When asked hypothetically if UB would be a candidate for the AAC, Aresco declined to address the question directly.

“Buffalo is a great school that’s achieved great things in football and basketball, and they’ve produced some great athletic directors in Warde Manuel, Danny White and Mark Alnutt,” Aresco told the News last week. “But the last thing I want to do is put a bullseye on Buffalo and upset (MAC commissioner) Jon Steinbrecher.”

Unclear to me if they are ready/willing/able to make the necessary financial commitments. But certainly as a university and as an athletic program I respect what they are doing.

I think its obvious Buffalo put out a feeler to the AAC.

I don't see it because they are outside the footprint and the AAC doesn't want to go back into the "northeast"

Hoping this happens. Assuming Marshall would decline, I'd love the MAC to go down to 11, play the Ohio teams annually instead of biannually, and make the league even more geographically tight-knit. Round robin in FB+BB please!

I've thought if Buffalo were to go the MAC could take another bite out of the Midwest somewhere like Illinois St.

Weaken "The Valley" even more.

The AAC doesn't need a rust belt school

No way you play a round robin Fb schedule with 11 teams. Thats 10 conference games and MAC schools depend on buy games from B1G programs to help with the costs of athletics.

It’s not what you want. It’s what ESPN wants. The AAC will add what ESPN tells them to add. Just ask the ACC.

That’s not who I’d expect, but they do fit the academic profile—-which is more important to the decision makers than many fans think.

They will, but does ESPN want to go from paying for every bit of Buffalo's content at the MAC price to paying the AAC price for it? Buffalo probably makes as much if not the most sense of any likely yes candidates, except for the fact that ESPN already owns 100% of their content for very little. What does ESPN gain by changing the patches on their jersey and paying multiple millions more a year to do it? Everyone keeps taking the statement of "there's a very short list of teams the AAC will add" as saying that's fully the AAC's decision. What I suspect is the actual truth is there's a very short list of teams that ESPN feel is worth the AAC adding.

The conference will stay at 11 unless a BYU or Army decide to join the conference.

Illinois State has the fanbase and fits the profile, but they don't have the money. Their football stadium only seats about 13,000. Where's the money going to come from to expand the stadium?

It's a school that produces great teachers and actuaries but few lawyers, doctors, engineers, or titans of industry. The state can't help due to its massive pension overload. And while the endowment is respectable by MAC standards, they need revenue from the endowment to operate the university.

Translation - we are not calling anyone - BUT - anyone who has interest in the AAC that wants to call us can. We'll listen. Aresco even says that in the article attached and multiple times in other interviews. 04-cheers

The assumption is that ESPN is ok with that. This is why I think the AAC early talk of standing pat and just splitting UConns share has suddenly gone quiet. I suspect ESPN had a little something to say about that. They very well may prefer that the AAC replace the UConn ESPN+ inventory that just walked out the door. Now its up to the AAC to see if they can come up with a deal where the pro-rata pay out stands at 7 million each and ESPN just keeps the 7 million for UConn (allowing the AAC to stand pat at 11)---or if ESPN would rather have that 12th team inventory to help build the ESPN+ subscriber base. There may be some sort of sompromise somewhere between those two positions (keep the UConn share---but add VCU for instance). 04-cheers
