Exclamation UNT's Littrell Now the 6th highest Paid Coach in the G5 ($1.8M+)
$1.8+ million in guaranteed annual salary and bonuses, with a one year extension through the 2023 season. If no other G5 contracts are signed by opening day of the season, Littrell will earn more than every coach in C-USA, the MAC, the Sun Belt, the MWC, and all but 5 in the AAC.

Go Mean Green! 04-cheers

1. Houston (Holgerson) $4 million
2. Memphis (Norvell) $2.6 million
3. USF (Strong) 2.5 million
4. Cincinnati (Fickell) $2.4 millon
5. Navy (Niumatalolo) $2.163 million
6. North Texas (Littrell) $1.8+ million
7. Colorado State (Bobo) $1.8 million
8. UCF (Heupel) $1.7 million
9. Boise State (Harsin) $1.65 million
10. Tulane (Fritz) $1.629 million

Impressive move by UNT.

I know y’all have gone 18-9 the last two years, and of course that shows a lot of strength. Still, need to put up a conference championship banner to really justify that kind of investment.

And maybe you’ll get to do that in about 5 months.

Thanks.

It would be great to play for the conference title again. I'd also like to see the Mean Green finish the season ranked. I think both could happen.

Your list is wrong. Charlie Strong makes 2.5M at USF. This is per his contract which is easily accessible via a simple google search.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nc.../95385694/

The amount jumps to $2.5 million in 2019, basically coinciding with the scheduled end of Strong’s payments from Texas, then goes to $2.6 million and $2.7 million for the last two years.

Nothing in the title claimed that it was about college realignment ... and since this board is college sports and conference realignment, coaching salary news is clearly on topic for this board.

That's a big investment in a coach with some good achievements (18-9 overall record) but also some significant question marks (blowout losses in 3 bowl/conference title games). A close look at his record leaves me to believe that he is very good at beating bad teams - not a slap, btw, that is an underrated ability - but struggles against those at the same level.

So IMO this kind of investment is a risky one, but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained.

When Littrell left Carolina, Larry Fedora's coaching abilities were exposed.

That is a fair assessment. But remember, Littrell took over a 1-11 program that lost to Portland State in horrific fashion. The man has taken the team to 3 consecutive bowl games since he arrived. Yes, the Mean Green have struggled against the better competition. I believe that is because North Texas lacked the talent at key positions. At the end of the day games are won by the quality of players on the field. Coaching and systems can only carry a team so far. Over the past few seasons, Littrell has revamped the recruiting department and hauled in some quality recruiting classes. Because we have now improved the quality of athletes we are putting on the field, I think we will see the Mean Green beat some of those better teams, when we face them.

I don't think the investment is risky. Littrell has produced back to back 9 win seasons, and embarrassed Arkansas last year. I think most G5 programs would be glad to lock up a coach that has those kind of skins on the wall. Plus, if a P5 does lure him away after the season, North Texas will get a nice buy-out of between $1.5 and $2.16 million to spend on our next coach.

Possibly nothing. But, it shows that North Texas is serious about playing FBS football, and willing to put their money into their athletics. That will be a factor conferences will be looking at when/if there is movement.

Sounds like Houston is trying to impress the XII.

The good thing about these kinds of debates is that time will prove who is correct. I hope you are, as I like North Texas - a long time friend went there to study music, he is a jazz drummer. Good luck! 04-cheers

North Texas is doing what it can with the hand we have. Our location, size, and strong regional economy provide nice us some nice advantages. We are increasing pay, budgets, and building facilities to rapidly overcoming years of neglect by past administrations.

Like other G5 programs, we are trying to build the best program we can, and let the chips fall where the may. It's still early, but according to 247Sports, North Texas currently has the 2nd highest ranked recruiting class among all G5 programs for 2020. I'm sure the numbers will change by February, but it does show the improvement in recruiting, and is a testament to new higher standards at UNT.

48. Memphis
52. North Texas
55. Western Michigan
57. Cincinnati
59. LA Tech

From Todge's peculiar "writing tics", I've been able to determine that he is not a fan of the following schools:

Houston = "uh" = "dem coogs doh"
North Texas = "north Texas state"
Texas A&M = "aggy" (also invariably referring to the "SEC SEC SEC")

And from his sig, it seems he's not a Longhorns fan either, unless he's quoting ironically. But clearly he likes some school in Texas. Given his location of Westlake, which is in the DFW metro area, I would have to guess either SMU or TCU.

Westlake is an Austin suburb

Todd Dodge is their coach
