actually P5 programs spending academic money on athletics is bad bad bad and every P5 member should be moving away from that

outside of the SEC SEC SEC the Big 12 is the conference that has the lowest academic subsidies (including student fees or required ticket purchases) and the Big 12 members are all trying to get theirs to zero sooner than later

the PAC 12 has some of the highest subsidies, but the ACC has the teams that on average have the most

the Big 10 does well, but they have a couple of outliers that should be ashamed that they have any at all much less as high as they are

really the SEC SEC SEC has a couple that should be ashamed as well, but that is just acceptable in most of their states so it is what it is

at some point the amounts that many G5s are spending will become an issue for them and it will probably happen relatively quickly when it starts to happen and it might even be set off by people looking at the P5 programs in their states first and asking why some of those have any academic money being spent

So far the only 2 schools to move their FB down are UConn and Idaho over cost.

last I checked UConn has not moved any sports down from D1-A perhaps you could link us to the article that reports that happening

and Idaho did not move down because of cost they moved won because they had a very poor administration that really has no clue and did not feel like caring about sports

it did not help that they had no conference and were far away from all the other independent programs....they were far from paying the high end of athletics subsidies or even being at the high end of the % of subsidy relative to total budget

plus there have been a ton pf programs that have dropped down or dropped football over time and that often happens in spurts when multiple teams decide they cannot compete or when conferences fall apart as they lose members

there are administrations in the AAC that have stated publicaly that their subsidies are not sustainable so that should say they are probably not sustainable

You've got to get over the student fee subsidy as factor in moving down. Only a portion of that money is spent on athletics with the remainder going toward student programming.

Idaho moved from mid-major FBS football to FCS over the cost associated with having to field a remote low level independent team. They decided they were better off moving down and understood with no market or recruiting they were never getting into the AAC.

UConn moved from a major FB conference to become a mid major independent partially because it was too expensive too keep up with the Joneses in AAC football.

If I'm looking at these data points I'd say the next target to "move down" in football might be UTEP if they can't get into the MWC with the arms race CUSA FB is starting to become it could make sense to pull out and go Indy.

MAC schools are never dropping down because they don't have an arms race in salaries in that conference and going to FCS for any of them is far less revenue + more travel costs.

the student fee numbers used are strictly for athletics they are not for intramural sports or the student news paper

schools have separate fees for those things

I don't know how its done everywhere but in the MAC they report the entire student activity fee as an outlay of the budget but use a far smaller portion of it to cover expenses.

If the MAC wants a facility it doesn't happen until a donor swings through the door with the $$$.

Running up big athletic debts seems to be more of a big school thing than a small one, IMO. Rutgers, Maryland, UConn ect.

I'm hearing rumors that the MWC has been sniffing around North Texas. Maybe they are preparing in case they lose one to the AAC.

That would be interesting.

AAC (Air Force)
MWC (North Texas)
CUSA (Arkansas St)
SBC (James Madison)

JMU really needs to throw their hat into the ring since it might be the last chance to move up for a long time. SBC is much better than it was 10 years ago.

How do people know when conferences are sniffing around their school? Do the conference reps arrive via helicopter? Wear league pins? Carry golden sealed envelopes?

Not me. I don't think I've ever tried to start a rumor on these boards. I'm hearing it from others associated with North Texas. Also, the Sun Herald mentioned something to the same effect.

"No C-USA school is doing a better job of investing in facilities than UNT, which has also earned some buzz as a future member of the Mountain West Conference."

Easy. All you need to do is know people in certain positions at your university. Any alum with connections can find out almost anything.

I hope Texas Tech, UT, OU and Oklahoma St remain fixtures in the Big 12. If the Big 12 fails, I hope that nucleus find homes in the PAC 12 or SEC. Hence the name and I won't do your research for you.

Simple question from a Tech alum to a frog alum? Do you consider TCU and Texas Tech a little 8 member of the Big 12?

I appreciate the link but what does this have to do with major college realignment?

north Texas state is following the lead of uh thinking if they just spend a ton of academic money on sports they have a prayer of P5 inclusion in the future
Power Conference school invests in athletics ? Good , good, good....

actually P5 programs spending academic money on athletics is bad bad bad and every P5 member should be moving away from that.

LSU has maybe the best model I've seen - the athletic department not only is not subsidized by the academic side, it is required to provide a certain minimum amount of money to the academic side, and this amount is increased whenever the SEC signs a new deal that brings in more money. IIRC, the current required payment is $7m a year.

And that's a minimum, e.g., in 2015 when the state cut the LSU budget, it was increased to $10m that year to make up the amount cut.

LSU screws up a lot of stuff, but this is the way athletics is supposed to work - supporting the academic side not draining from it.

This is the case at many other SEC schools as well. SC does a transfer to the general fund every year

So:

You hope the Big 12 remains, but you chose a permanent user name based on the assumption that it may in fact fail. And yet you still whine when anyone else points out the Big 12 may in fact fail.

As for the difference between TCU and Tech well that’s easy

TCU earned its way into the Big 12 and if the Big 12 fails it will have to earn its way into another P Conference. For better or worse TCU controls its own fate.

Tech had to use backroom politics to get into the Big 12 and if the Big 12 fails then it’s fate is 100% out of it own hands because no one wants you as a stand-alone option. You’re desperately hoping to be the admission fee to get the schools they actually want. Better hope at least one P conference feels like highly overpaying to get UT.

I've explained why I chose my handle. No further explanation is needed.

Hmmm

That sounds like a BS cop out....

But hey just go ahead and post the link to where you explain it so the whole class can read it

Prove me wrong TCU grad.

The Big Ten said Texas had a “Tech” problem. The SEC already has A&M. The ACC is too far away. It only leaves the Pac-12 as the only realistic option but it’s only because of Texas and Oklahoma not because of their own merit.

TCU earned its power school status. That Rose Bowl victory vs the Big Ten champion paved the way to the Big XII not to mention they won the conference and the Peach Bowl in their third season.

Sure, but just like Tech, TCU will likely have to rely on Texas to escape to a power conference if the Big 12 implodes.
