What market?

Go look up what other HCs make in the AAC, excepting UConn. That's the market that matters here.

RE: University investigating women's basketball program
nobody cares enough to do that search....

Am I the only one who wants new blood injected into the women's BB program?

McFerrin recruited the Muslim woman, but then turned around and 'rebuked' her for taking those mandatory 10-15 min prayer breaks. Dayum...! Everybody on Allah's green earth knows a Head Coach doesn't insult someone's religion.

But never mind all that.

Why can't we have an exciting, classy women'''''s BB coach with vision?

McFerrin is McBoring and McDone.

10 years is enough.

That's the whole point that you are missing. It's an artificial market. Which happens when the revenues of the sport can't come close to justifying the pay of the coaches.

so we need to "take a stand" against non-revenue sports coaching salaries?

I think $240K is about 3 times what she is worth, if the market was dictating her pay.

My neighbor in Atoka is the goalie coach for the Memphis women's soccer team. The team generates no or almost no revenue - games are free to the public. He lives in a very nice house. Kids go to private school (my son played soccer with his son), wife doesn't have to work. I mean, good for him, he's a nice enough guy. But is he paid too much?

You should stay out of other peoples pockets.

Do you know that is his only source of income?

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep giving my opinion. I know him well, yes. I would gladly reduce the income of coaches and assistant coaches in the non-revenue, money-losing sports to fund the revenue sports, men's hoops and football.

That's not how any AD operates, and quite possibly could be well outside federal regulations.

But thank you for your concern.

You're not paying those people just to coach. You are paying those people to keep you legal with the NCAA and out of court for anything else. An extra $100K a year is worth every penny compared to just one $5 million settlement.

I will take the job right now for half her pay and I guarantee we will not have any NCAA issues at all. I won't even put in a 2 week notice. I will just tell my boss "bye", and head straight to the UofM.

And yet paying McFerrin $240K seems to have produced just what you say it shouldn't produce?

Because it is basically a throw-away sport. It wasn't going to compete for conference title due to the previous existence of UConn in the conference and it was not going to be able to compete locally for talent against the SEC schools. School is required by law to have the team, so as long as no one was making any waves it was allowed to continue on in its current form.

It didn't have to be though. With UCONN in the conference and a number of former Pat Summit players looking to be coaches, we had a golden opportunity.

The women's basketball team just as the baseball team is a dead end job and no one wanting to build a career will take the career-killing job. They will not take the job unless they believe they have a chance of being successful and the school is going to go full in with the program.

Why? It’s fertile recruiting ground. Maybe we haven’t had the right coaches. We should be good in baseball and wbb.

As good a job as Norvell is doing we are still relying in the best of the rest when it comes to talent. He is not getting the top quality players that the P5 is wanting. We may drag in a number of 4 stars every few years. But a five star is all but out of the question. This year is the first time in many years we have seen any significant 4 star players commit to women's basketball. Unless they have a personal connection to the school most 4 and 5 star players are not going to come here.

We had better hope that the renewed push for the ERA does not gain any momentum or we could see ourselves having to pay women's basketball coach what we pay the men's.

Ain't gonna happen.

Most of coaches' compensation comes from the big boosters...only a small portion is actually a direct university cost.

Worst case scenario is that the university-paid portion could be somewhat equalized...what boosters decide to fork over is their own business outside the control of any government entity.

Doesn't matter what Norvell or Penny are paid by the school, the money that matters comes from the fanbase.

From the MBJ

Quote:The U of M lists the salaries of Penny Hardaway and Mike Norvell as $200,000 each for 2018, which is what the university pays them. Private sources bump up both coaches’ total compensation to a reported $1.3 million for Hardaway and $2.6 million for Norvell.
