Question for those in and around North Carolina
My wife, daughter, and parents in law are about to take a road trip to North Carolina. We'll be at Sapphire Valley Resort, but will also visit my wife's grandparents who live not too far away in the mountains somewhere in North Carolina.

Any recommendations on must-sees or must-dos? We'll be there about a week btw.

Asheville is about an hour and a half away. Lots of must-dos there.

RE: Question for those in and around North Carolina
Yeah, lots to do in Asheville for a midsized town. Lots of restaurants and breweries and the Biltmore Estate. I'd recommend driving along the BRP at least a few miles if you've never been, the Linn Cove Viaduct and the Grandfather Mt. area is probably the most impressive but it's all beautiful, it's just a matter of how far you want to go. It'd take you a little out of your way towards the smokeys but Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is the largest old growth forest on the east coast and a magical place. There's a BBQ place in Robbinsville, NC just outside of there that was crazy good, or at least there was. If you enjoy outdoor activities there's no shortage where you're staying. Table Rock State Park in Upstate SC is a neat place and not far from where you'll be staying. If you're looking for more urban adventure, head to Charlotte. Have fun.

RE: Question for those in and around North Carolina
mturn makes good suggestions, and the Biltmore is definitely something you cannot do anywhere else. BRP in his post is the Blue Ridge Parkway. Well worth driving a ways, and stopping at a few overlooks. If you like a cold adult beverage Asheville is full of options, from local breweries, to big craft breweries like New Holland. Enjoy your time in the NC Mountains--I am going up tomorrow, and it will be nice to get out of some of this heat.

Sierra Nevada’s east coast brewery in south Asheville.
Built for tourism with restaurant & outdoor lounging.
(Kid friendly with cornhole & other outdoor activities.)

New Belgium!

But if you're into breweries in AVL here's my list of some you should hit up:

Burial
Hi Wire
Wedge
Highland
Green Man
Asheville Brewing
UpCountry
Hillman
Sweeten Creek
Bhramari
French Broad
Archetype
Oyster House
Catawba
Zillicoah
Twin Leaf
Funkatorium (Only sour beers, owned by Wicked Weed)
Pisgah (out in Swannanoa)

The big brands have good locations too:

Wicked Weed
New Belgium
Sierra Nevada

If you like Ciders gotta go to:

Noble
Ginger's Revenge
Urban Orchard

Places to avoid:

One World Brewing. Expense and sucks

RE: Question for those in and around North Carolina
Grove Park Inn is a great place in Asheville to eat (seven Presidents have). Nanthalia Rafting is close to Robbinsville, and for a slower pace the old train runs from Bryson City to Dillsboro, and if you water but not rafting try Deep Creek near Bryson City (tubing).

The drive to Sliding Rock near Brevard is beautiful, and there are more water falls in that county (Transylvania) than any other county in NC. And Hendersonville NC (a beautiful mountain city is the next county over, which also has Chimney Rock.

A hidden gem is Pearson Falls near Saluda NC.

Transylvania County in the southern part of the mountains near South Carolina has a Waterfall driving route which is spectacular. Also can head to Sliding Rock and have a fun afternoon if you have kids.

Be very careful. Raining like hell tonight and those rapids will kill.

If you can make it over to Chapel Hill, UNC will be happy to confer on you a degree just for setting foot on campus.

There's always Ghost Town in the Sky at Magie Val.......Oh, forgot. They closed it. Sad.

If you do the BRP take the time to see Mount Mitchell. Highest point in North America east of the Mississippi, and usually 15 degrees or more colder, so a nice break from the Summer heat below.

clt says to make a trip to CLT. Great overlook where you can watch planes take off and land. Recommend 1-3pm when the big birds are coming back from Europe.

Haha do people go and watch AAs ancient A330s come in? No thanks. And I’ll get a connection to go across the pond in something a bit more comfortable

We kayaked this morning with perfect weather, nothing even resembling a rapid. Will do an early morning hike in the DuPont State Forrest to see the waterfalls. Highly recommend Square Root in Brevard for lunch/dinner.

Appreciate all the great advice, guys. Looking forward to it! We're leaving early tomorrow for the first leg of our road trip. I see the weather forecast for Sapphire doesn't look very promising though, as there seem to be scattered thunderstorms in the forecast for at least the next 10 days or so. Hopefully we'll see a shift from that. Still excited though.

Happy 4th to everyone!

Don’t fret the rain too much. There are always threats of scattered thunderstorms up there this time of year. Bring an umbrella or poncho and roll with it. The rain usually doesn’t last too long.
