The Great Midwest was a pretty decent little conference in that day.

Auburn
Cincinnati
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Louisville
Miami
Pittsburgh
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest

I went for metro areas and/or non-flagship programs but paying attention to an eastern geography with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh setting the northern limit. I also like a smaller conference of 10 members playing a round robin schedule. This conference would enable us to compete in football, be top tier in hoops and not too shabby in baseball. We would also have the majority of games within a reasonable travel distance. So, I balanced outside the box with practicality.

What's past is future...I'm for re-forming the old Metro:

Florida State
UC
UL
Memphis
Georgia Tech
South Carolina
Pitt
Tulane
Virginia Tech

There was never anything wrong with it in the 1st place.

I agree. The Metro Conference was my favorite of the ones Cincinnati has been a part of. I think it works great for both basketball and football. It also keeps our regional rivals with UL, Memphis, and Pitt.

Which was the first school to pull out of the Metro? I'm thinking it was South Carolina.

Didn't it kind of fall apart once Penn State decided to go to the Big 10 instead?

The two events could be related, but I'm thinking that it was well after the Metro imploded that Penn State went to the BIG.

Metro fell apart in '91 while PSU didnt move to the Big 10 until after that...but I was always under the impression that if Penn State didn't drag their feet on joining (because they were pushing for the Big Ten) the conference would likely still be around.

PSU was never going to be in the Metro. Paterno was pushing throughout the 80s for an Eastern Conference that he would essentially run. The other schools hated Paterno and wanted nothing to do with him. They joined the Big East and the first thing they did was to blackball PSU's overtures to follow. PSU's faculty and President wanted the Big Ten anyways, and the Big East slamming the door shut gave them the opportunity to bypass Paterno's wishes and move to the Big Ten.

Saint Louis, then Georgia Tech...but probably the straw that broke the camel's back was FSU. The schools with struggling FB at that point wanted the Metro to include FB, and it was never really a FB conference...in fact, UC may have been an independent at that time. FSU bolted, and the conference began to disintegrate.

When UC left the Metro, it still had an autobid, but the great Midwest did not...it wasn't until the merger with the remaining Metro teams that what would eventually become CUSA got an autobid back.

RE: Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
Not a Cincy fan but if I was conference czar there would be 7 regional BCS conferences (ACC, BE, B8, B1G, PAC, SEC, SWC). Add a wild-card for an 8-team playoff.

Big Ten: 14 teams, 10 games, 4 protected rivals, play 6 of the other 9 meaning everyone plays a H&H in a 3-year span. League would be the original 10 + ND/UK/UL/UC.
2 OOC would be the Victory Bell and Paddlewheel Trophy.

Cincy’s FB schedule
OOC - Miami (Victory Bell)
OOC - Pitt (Paddlewheel Trophy)
B1G - Minnesota/Iowa/Wisconsin
B1G - Minnesota/Iowa/Wisconsin
B1G - Northwestern/Illinois/Purdue
B1G - Northwestern/Illinois/Purdue
B1G - Notre Dame/Michigan/Michigan St
B1G - Notre Dame/Michigan/Michigan St
B1G - Indiana
B1G - Kentucky
B1G - Louisville
B1G - Ohio St

Agree the point made by others that in a perfect world we would be playing in a conference/division with regional foes such as Louisville, Pitt, WVU, etc.. Unfortunately it will take an act of Congress or a complete overhaul of the NCAA for that to occur.

I hope to god the AAC does not add a UAB, Southern Miss or Georgia State to the conference. Just three more teams outside the region that nobody in Greater Cincinnati gives a rat's butt about.

...and this would take the big money conferences to push for the overhaul...which isn't happening.

Awesome thread. I'd like a conference with teams of a comparative pedigree/budget/location:

Cincinnati
Memphis
Louisville
Indiana
NC State
Virginia Tech
Georgia Tech
Pittsburgh
Houston
SMU
UCF
USF

Agree completely. For UC, second only to not (yet) having a home in the P5 is the lack of geographic rivals that UC fans can get excited about watching. Cincinnati is situated on the edge of B10, SEC and now ACC (Louisville, Pitt) country and most of those schools have decided not to engage in any regular home and home arrangement-- in some cases for valid concerns about the impact of losing to UC in this recruiting hotbed.

I like yours with the idea of similar pedigree/budget/competition but would personally go a bit more regional, adding West Virginia, Virginia, Purdue, Kentucky for 16 teams. The thing I miss most about the old Big East was having road games that were within a reasonable driving distance. Probably why I wouldn't hate Marshall in our conference (still think adding no one is the best option right now).

Interesting discussion.

Just looking at all the changes over the years should remind us - the way it has been for the last 3 years does not mean it will be that way for the next 30 years.

One of the biggest constants has been change and re-alignment.

RE: Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
I saw an idea for conference realignment years ago that had the country divided into 5 or 6 regions. Each region had an upper tier (such as Big Ten type teams) and a lower tier (such as MAC type tiers). Every so often one or two of the upper tier teams (like Illinois?) gets relegated and one of the lower tier teams get promoted to take their place.

Never happen, but it makes the battle of the bottom of each league as intense as the battle of the top.
