Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
All this talk about who left and who will join and what will it look like two, three, five years down the road, etc., etc., got me thinking about an ideal conference for Cincinnati. Give me your best conference members with Cincinnati and don't hold back. I don't care if you just list the teams or you also give your reasoning/analysis. I posted this lineup over on the College Sports Main Board:
Auburn
Cincinnati
Clemson
Georgia Tech
Louisville
Miami
Pittsburgh
Vanderbilt
Virginia Tech
Wake Forest
I went for metro areas and/or non-flagship programs but paying attention to an eastern geography with Cincinnati and Pittsburgh setting the northern limit. I also like a smaller conference of 10 members playing a round robin schedule. This conference would enable us to compete in football, be top tier in hoops and not too shabby in baseball. We would also have the majority of games within a reasonable travel distance. So, I balanced outside the box with practicality.

RE: Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
I'd like to imagine the whole Raycom super conference thing had happened back in the day, but with the fat trimmed to come up with something like this:
North:
Penn State
Pitt
West Virginia
Syracuse
Rutgers
Boston College
South:
Miami
Florida State
South Carolina
Virginia Tech
Louisville
Cincinnati
I have hard time thinking about unrealistic realignment scenarios, but something like this could have actually happened in the early '90s if things had played out right. Outside of Penn State, Florida State, and South Carolina, all of the above schools were in the Big East at one point and many of them are now in the ACC, where I feel we belong currently. Another alternate theory I would be happy with is if the Big East had started with 12 instead of 8, which would maybe still be alive today:
North:
Temple
Pitt
West Virginia
Syracuse
Rutgers
Boston College
South:
Miami
Memphis
East Carolina
Virginia Tech
Louisville
Cincinnati

^^^^
Yes, the Raycom model was inspiration for my alignment of teams. I just went with a smaller area. That would've been some conference indeed. When we were in the Metro Conference there was some of this geography in place.

I would call this "the backyard conference".
O$U, Loserville, IU, Purdue, Michigan, ND, UK and what the heck, we'll let in armPitt too.

RE: Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
Here's a fun one that would be Cincinnati-centric and feature both football and basketball blue bloods:
West:
Notre Dame
Purdue
Indiana
Louisville
Kentucky
Cincinnati
East:
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Penn State
Pitt
West Virginia
Honestly, this is the way a conference should be. Close-knit geographically and tons of rivals. Conference realignment sucks.

RE: Build Cincinnati's Conference From Scratch
Building it with in mind SEC and Big Ten schools are not in consideration assuming those conferences don’t implode. Being reasonable and choosing reasonable schools.
West:
1) BYU
2) Memphis
3) Oklahoma St.
4) Houston
5) SMU
6) Kansas
7) Kansas St.
East:
1) Cincy
2) UCF
3) USF
4) WV
5) Louisville
6) Navy- FB only
Non Football:
Presidents can vote between Wichita, Gonzaga, Dayton, VCU etc.
Dream Conference:
North:
1) Cincy
2) Ohio State
3) Michigan
4) Penn State
5) Indiana
6) West Virginia
7) Michigan State
South:
1) Louisville
2) Kentucky
3) Tennessee
4) Memphis
5) Georgia
6) Miami (The U)
7) North Carolina

Made this easy. +1 However I think I would boot Memphis in favor of a North Carolina.

IF We were in the same conference as Miami Florida, would we even place a defensive player on Nyssier Brooks?
just sayin' :)

Try not to take it so seriously Diamond Doss. Honestly, if you think about how many conferences and teams we've been paired with over the past 60 years since our days in the Missouri Valley Conference it would be interesting to list those out and see how our geography has changed. We've been jumping around more than a Las Vegas call girl. In 1957, we joined the MVC and guess who were members at that time? Houston, North Texas, Tulsa and Wichita State. So you talk about a geographic outlier for Cincinnati. Interesting that several of those programs are still conference mates in the American.
