freshtop's conference

I would split things up North vs. South. With rivalries being protected across divisions (AppState vs GaSo, etc.)

I would let the best team host the football championship game (head to head, best record overall, then best record division, then best robot rating, etc. until a tiebreaker would be settled).

Basketball would include all teams in the initial round, with the better seed hosting. The top 4 seeds would get bye's, host their first game. The Final 4 would be played at a championship site that would rotate between locations (Memphis, Jacksonville, etc.)

No name really made sense, so I let Amazon buy naming rights.

Obviously basketball was the thrust here; not that football is terrible with Cincinnati, Marshall and two service academies, but the quickest way for a non-power conference to gain credibility is through basketball and with Gonzaga, VCU, Villanova and Cincy among others, I like their chances.

(yes, Gonzaga. For a better TV deal we can all live with it).

I would have taken Georgetown, or Xavier over Gonzaga. I understand any G5 would love to have Gonzaga but everyone else is Ohio or East.

I don't think F_U add any value when I already have U_F. I tried working out a deal for Colorado State and UCONN, but nothing materialized. In the end, I would will stretch my borders a bit vs. taking on extra mouths in a state I already dominate.

I'm more curious why not Wichita State? Much better history, consistently strong, great support and fits well with your Midwest schools, many of whom they already play in the AAC. I could see wanting a six West/six Midwest balance, but adding NMSU and San Jose State wrecked that anyway, so Wichita gives you 7/7. I get the appeal of contiguous states but I think Wichita is worth the extra miles.

Had shot at NE div with Conn, Mass, Buffalo & Toledo

If I had known the first four didn't have to connect as you picked them and just by the end, I would have started UCF and Memphis. Then UAB and USF to connect all 4. I didn't really want to be in the NE as I don't value those programs above what I picked. UCONN and Colorado State were the best available at the time. I am fine keeping them, but drafted them with the intention of trading. There are way more schools in the SE than NE in G5 FBS. The only program I took that hasn't had a solid showing in FBS was Charlotte. They fit my region well and are under new management. There is also a history of basketball success that I think they will regain. I toyed with taking Troy and Northern Illinois as well, but decided just to stand.

I can respect that. I might have gone with Georgetown, Xavier, Butler or maybe Wichita State with one of my Army/Navy pairings, but the opportunity to add Gonzaga was too good to pass up, geography notwithstanding.

Army and Navy are national brands so that was attractive, but what really made them valuable in this draft was the ability to add basketball powers to pair with them, so they became priority adds.

ODU was a homer pick; I don't regret taking them but in retrospect I might have gone with UConn in the fifth round, figuring ODU might slip to sixth, or seventh if I stayed with Buffalo with my sixth. I gambled that I had sufficiently sewn up the Northeast enough that UConn wouldn't be worth a large leap in footprint for the other conferences.

As with most drafts, by the end you're looking for the best available player instead of filling a need. JMU has good football, a nice basketball arena under construction, strong non-rev sports (softball and women's lacrosse in particular) and good academics so I thought they were worth the gamble. Liberty is also speculative but they're spending a lot of money (with a football stadium that can be expanded to P5 standards) and they seem intent on moving up as fast as they can. Plus Virginia's a big enough state and the three schools don't overlap that much.

Villanova gave me a second national title contender in basketball, and to me that was worth the Philly redundancy and what I'm guessing will be piss-poor FBS football (whereas JMU has the parts in place for a moveup; Nova probably hasn't seriously considered it in years).

I didn't participate or care about the P5 draft. I was just going by the rules posted in the G5 thread. I interpreted them differently, but I don't argue with the results. I could have asked for clarification ahead of the draft, that's on me. I am still happy with my end result. I have a mostly regional conference with strong performance in both football and basketball.

None of these G5 conferences are going to get a TV deal that moves the needle in any way even though they may have 3-4 AAC members or top MWC CUSA members.

So, I value compactness of the divisions to be an asset. Colorado state is a must drop because it's on the other side of the country from the rest of the conference. UConn is close enough where they don't need to be dropped. I liked 4 teams in Florida, 1 in Alabama and 1 in Georgia. A very close knit geographically compact conference with a lot of bus trips instead of flights. Louisiana Lafayette was on an Island like UConn, close enough to be kept but I thought UConn is currently a more valuable program.

Nothing about the F_U's is geographically compact though. They are still a rough drive for anyone other than a handful in the league. Colorado State wasn't drafted for their market, I like their programs. They have made the NCAA Tournament twice this decade. Have been ranked a couple times as well. In Football they have shown great potential (although Mike Bobo is looking like a dud). F_U's are beyond awful in basketball. FAU has had one winning season in football this decade. FIU has been better than that and Butch Davis has them trending up. I still don't think they are worth the add. I would be hurting two of my most powerful football programs (USF and UCF) by placing FIU and FAU on equal footing recruiting wise. If I didn't have U_F then it would make sense because it would give me access to Florida for recruiting.
