I heard Carolina, duke and Kentucky are working the back channels to get in. Bama and UGA have already greased the palms with 2 million in private donations to fox sports 3. Should be an interesting off season.

Still bitter I see 07-coffee3

It is probably one of the most ludicrous threads I have ever seen. It is like man kind is devolving everyday

The SEC needs a private school to hide their conference business in.

Why would any Vandy admin walk away from their historical opponents, multiple millions more in revenue, and a perfect geographical fit to be a misfit in a northeast and Midwest hoops league with a bunch of schools that really don’t have any history with them?

Why did Georgia Tech & Tulane leave the SEC?? Plus, have you seen the SEC's NET & RPI lately??

Vandy would never leave the SEC for any other conference. And I'm not sure that they can be kicked out, even if they could, it's not all about athletic programs, the academics makes the SEC better.

I'm sure a lot of people said the same thing about Maryland never leaving the ACC, but they did. Never say never. The SEC would never kick out Vanderbilt though. That's just not how the SEC operates. The SEC has NEVER kicked out any member. Three members have left the SEC though: Georgia Tech, Tulane, and Sewanee or the University of the South, as it's also known.

RE: Would the Big East take Vanderbilt if Vandy left the SEC???
When it comes to Vandy in the SEC and their continued membership, it doesn't sound like they have schools looking to get rid of them, like Temple had in the Big East, or even Penn State had in the Big Ten after the Sandusky issue came to light.

Vandy is likely the kind of school that will never pour a mint into athletics. Over time, it may not make them viable for all D1 sports, but they are competent enough to compete. In the SEC.

It should say something that the Big Ten "studied them." And I mean, that it got out there publicly. I don't doubt the Big Ten has considered many schools over the years, but when that one came up, especially around the time the conference officials said they wanted to look toward the southeast, yeah, you may wonder whether there were/has been/continues to have conversations between the two sides.

My guess is, should the Big XII shed membership, I do believe Vandy could be a part of the move. As in, it wouldn't surprise me. But, I think we're years away from that, and a lot can happen between now and then.

The closest thing to the Temple situation two decades ago was the Duke football situation 15-20 years ago when the conference finally had a come to Jesus meeting with them about their football after Fred Goldsmith. Duke was told point blank to spend more and they finally did. After all it was chump change to them.

What was the per-school conference revenue distribution at the time GT and Tulane left the SEC?

I don't know, but McDonald's hamburgers were 15 cents, fries were a dime, and the drink was a dime. And football tickets from that era were around $5 or $6 and there was only one game a week televised, so not very much at all.

BTW: The only thing that would make Vanderbilt consider leaving is if the SEC followed California's lead in permitting players to earn money from their likenesses, and even more to the point if there is ever some pay for play.

When those days come Vanderbilt won't be joining the Big 10 or the ACC. I would think they might help to form an all private conference that played football at a lower tier but played basketball and baseball in the upper tier. They might well be joined by Duke, Rice, Wake Forest, Virginia (even as a public), Miami, Pittsburgh, Boston College, and perhaps Northwestern and maybe the service academies.

Egg Head Conference:

Sunny Side:

BC, Army, Navy, WF, Duke, GT, Miami

Omlette:

Pitt, Vandy, Ill, NW, Kansas, Rice, Air Force

The Big 10 did seriously look at Vanderbilt. It was rumored there was a standing offer. It's feasible. But the cultural identity is a stumbling block and for that reason a move to the ACC might be more understandable. Vandy is usually competitive in basketball but has been in a hardwood tailspin for awhile now. Their baseball lines up with anyone, but baseball success and Southern exposure go hand in hand.

The SEC will never ask them to leave. What the SEC has done is ask them to upgrade facilities to keep in line with the conference and the SEC feels strongly that Vanderbilt should do this because when their venues are sold out it is because of everyone else's traveling fans.

The only issue that I see that could dislodge Vanderbilt would be some kind of pay for play. So for that hasn't happened. But if it does happen it wouldn't surprise me if Vandy became the first SEC partial member, everything but football. In fact if the SEC wanted to really enhance it's academic profile there is room for that kind of membership considering other institutions with strong academics and poor or no football, but with competitive basketball and baseball.

Those moves were several decades ago and the payout was much much smaller then. Irrelevant to now.

The problem with this question, and I’m saying it without reading anything already wrote below, is that voluntarily leaving the SEC -
In contact with today’s martlet - means they are drastically deemphasizing sports in general. Why would they want a school doing that?

RE: Would the Big East take Vanderbilt if Vandy left the SEC???
The thought of Vanderbilt leaving the SEC (or being asked to leave) is absurd. My great great aunt (the venerable Lucille Binns) was one of the first women to attend VU (this was in the early 1900s). And since then, I've had no fewer than 10 family members, on both my mother's and father's sides of the family, work at and/or attend the university.

You have to understand the dynamic at play related to Vanderbilt, Nashville and the SEC. If you do understand it, you know VU is never leaving (barring some insane scenario). Vanderbilt is not Maryland (and that is not a slight against UofM). Nashville and Atlanta are the two epicenters of the SEC. The SEC knows it and VU knows it. They are bonded.

This is nowhere close to analogous to UConn. Not. Even. Close.

UConn was looking at $7M a year in media rights. Vanderbilt will make more than 6 times that in 2019-20 by being in the SEC. That money doesn't follow them to the Big East.

The whole notion is patently absurd.

While I essentially agree with you, I did want to remind you that the SEC is doing just fine in Atlanta without Georgia Tech. And New Orleans is still SEC territory without Tulane. I think we'll be adding more of Dallas to that impressive list before too long.

It would be rare for any conference to"kick out" a member.
The ACC didn't kick out Maryland or South Carolina (although the chickens were unsuccessful in their attempts to rejoin).
The defunct website MR.SEC spent a lot of time explaining why Vanderbilt was not a "fit" in any fashion for the SEC and actively advocated their removal.
Vanderbilt, with a move to the ACC, would give ESPN dual marketing opportunities in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee (ACC/SEC) without interference with the "core" of either conference.

While moving NC State or Virginia Tech to the SEC or moving Auburn or Ole Miss to the ACC would indeed create dual marketing opportunities in North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama and Mississippi, those moves would interfere with the "core" of both conferences.04-cheers
