Marshall To Start New School With 2 New Degree's: Aviation

Marshall will partner 1st with Southern Utah University because their aviation school is already accredited. The start date for Marshall is Fall of 2021.

Classes will be held on the South Charleston Campus and training at Yeager Airport. Marshall will have a hanger built at Yeager and start off with 2 SR22 Cirrus Aircraft and a helicopter with up to 7 more planes to come by 2023. There will also be a flight simulator built and put in at the hanger at Yeager Airport.

Its not ridiculous, calm down. The Charleston campus is growing and can only be good for Marshall in general. They are actually getting ready to build the first dormitory there for students.

The Charleston campus started out as 3 office rooms in South Charleston in the early 80s and has grown to now is a 10 building campus overlooking South Charleston.

People always complain that Charleston is a WVU town. One way to combat that is growing the South Charleston campus even more and if the aviation school is successful that is the perfect way to be more visible.

Why are you hyperventilating over something positive for the school and what other schools do all the time. For example LSUs medical school isn't in Baton Rouge, its in New Orleans.

I wish UAB would do this but we've got Auburn as well Wallace St to a smaller degree that have Aviation courses in our area. I think much need will be coming especially in the ATC area w/ many that traditionally came from the military ranks becoming smaller in number.

Commercial Pilots are stating to be in demand now and with the mandatory retirement age at 65 the group has to be replenished every 7-10 years or you lose even more.

Another degree I wouldn't mind seeing Marshall offer is Hospitality and Hotel Management. No one in the state offers that program. And there are believe it or not 25 colleges or universities in West Virginia.

I disagree. I still like it.

With that said, it's going to take a pretty big drone to fly 200 people to London.

Ok. Fair enough Zoned. I just thought with the work being done on the south side of HTS, they could have really helped the Huntington airport.

I don't know all the details, the aviation school just became public a few months ago and the reason I posted it now is the BOG just approved it to go forward and get a starting date.

We don't know if Dr Gilbert went to HTS and ask and was turned down and then went to CRW and CRW made an agreement. Or maybe he put a bid out for HTS and CRW and CRW came back with a better offer. I hope it was the 2nd.

One of the things I like about Dr Gilbert is he is just as aggressive as Dr Kopp was. I remember having a few conversations with DR Kopp when he got the job as president in 2008. His #1 goal at the time on the academic side was getting Marshall's Carnegie Classification changed from Master's Colleges & Universities to Doctoral Universities (R2). Unfortunately Dr Kopp passed away before seeing that as it just happened in early March. After that reclassification Im glad Dr Gilbert didn't just see that as a win and quit. It looks like his goal is to get Marshall to an R1, that will take time and work but I think it an get done. For that to happen we are going to have to spread our degree programs on the main campus in Huntington and on the South Charleston campus.

clt says to use a similar cabin model to modern aircraft, but have drone tech fly the plane.

Drones are flown remotely by PILOTs.

I read somewhere that Yeager came to Marshall first asking for the program.

Also HTS is working with Marshall and Mountwest to develop a 2 year program in repair and maintenance at Tri-State.

RE: Marshall To Start New School With 2 New Degree's: Aviation
A new generation of plane-sized autonomous delivery vehicles is capable of carrying hundreds of pounds for hundreds of miles. They’re called cargo drones. They are fast, more environmentally friendly, and could completely change the cargo industry.

In a new BluePaper, Morgan Stanley Research says autonomous urban aircraft may no longer be the stuff of comic books. Accelerating tech advances and investment could create a $1.5 trillion market by 2040.

clt applauds marshal for trying to think ahead.

Planes that are being designed right now are still being develop for two pilots. Those are going to be in production for 20 years so doubtful anything changes in the next 30 years. Maybe down to one pilot and a remote pilot (germanwings suicide could be very real if only One person) In my lifetime. Hackers can hack everything so a drone would be a great idea....... won’t ever see me on a pilotless plane.

Maybe as conference mates MT could offer some assistance if Marshall wanted it?

MT has historically had one of the top aerospace programs in the nation (but of course has seen its rankings fall as P5 programs create new ones). Think we’ve mentioned before but we have a fleet of about two dozen aircraft, flight simulators, and even an air traffic control tower simulator. Speaking of drones...

Middle Tennessee’s new Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Operations concentration, within the B.S. in Aerospace degree, is the first of its kind in the state and one of only a handful in the United States. https://www.mtsu.edu/programs/unmanned-aircraft/index.php
