Why bother? The Canadian university leagues are functionally beer leagues for major junior alums that weren't good enough to go pro.

I would love Ohio and Kent St to bring hockey back. Kent St still has an ice arena.

At some point, Liberty will take their club team into D-1. They already have the facility, a solid history at the club level, and more money than the school knows what to do with it. Other than Atlantic Hockey, I can't see a conference take them in, though.

Might be something if they can opened the door for other Canadian schools join the NCAA's D2 and upgrade their hockey to D1. There are men's club teams in the PAC 12 who could take both Alaskans, Simon Fraser and the AAU type school of British Columbia. BCU fits in with the PAC 12 since their acadenics rank higher than several PAC 12 in the world. Big 10 could get McGill and Toronto to join as hockey affiliates. Those schools are AAU. I think D1 should open their doors to Canada schools to join.

Simon Fraser appears to have quietly shelved the idea. I looked up their schedule for the last year and both the Alaska schools and Arizona State were not on the schedule anymore. They experimented with the concept in 2016-17, but they appear to have decided to stick to the local Canadian beer league.

Simon Frazer's aim is to attract actual Canadian prospects who are now going to US schools (they are always a top 3 Canadian program). So it's possible they may eventually join D-I. But I wonder if the loose Beer League rules for eligibility are a problem. It might not be easy to meet NCAA compliance. This may be a bigger hurdle than anything else.

They would be a nice addition and help the Alaska schools out big time. Too bad it looks rather unlikely for the immediate future.

Western Hockey is sort of a chicken and egg situation. You need chickens to lay eggs and there just aren't any. Schools with Hockey are few and far between, and the start up costs are high. You really need some sugar daddies to start any programs. I wouldn't expect any programs to start, although ASU is prodding some of it's neighbors.

You need to move on. It's been 10 years since Simon Fraser began their transition to NCAA D2 and the silence from other Canadian schools with a desire to move to NCAA D2 is deafening. To think that they would do it just for Ice Hockey is laughable; even more so since NCAA D1 has yet to allow international schools to compete in that division.

Simon Fraser is not the typical Canadian school when it comes to athletics. They have a nearly 5-decade history of playing U.S. rules sports as a long-time member of the NAIA. They were partial members of the CIS for a short time prior to joining NCAA D2. In this respect, Simon Fraser is a U.S. school that just happens to be in Canada.

I mentioned Canada schools because British Columbia also played in the NAIA. Before the 1940s, the big dogs did played Canada schools in college football. They also played Havana U. and U. of Mexico in Mexico City.

Until D1 changes their rules to allow international members as either a full member or a single-sport member it is insane to even be talking about this. And No, they will not get a waiver either. It's nice that something happened "Before the 1940s" but it's history and it is fairly safe to say that your examples will never happen again.

Why does the PAC 12 need a new TV market? Adding University of British Columbia does not really add a new market since it is located in Vancouver, just across the border and only 141 miles from the University of Washington in Seattle.

BC Place is the home of the BC Lions of the CFL. It was the opening and closing Ceremony for the winter olympics. The stadium seats 54,600 which could be expanded. The stadium could be used for both UBC and Simon Fraser. With pro sports from MLB and NBA could expose kids in Canada to participate. It is where we could get more students to play football.

What?!! Everyone in Canada is exposed to the MLB and the NBA through TSN (basically their ESPN). A simple google search would have answered that instead of a delusional statement.
