RE: Uconn Football Will Be Fine as an Independent
It's pretty obvious they've given up on UConn football at the very least. They've been consigned to oblivion. So they will continue to hemorrhage money but at a greater rate, and be in worse position to appear valuable to a P5 conference.

The AAC was the worst thing ever for UConn football, it cratered there. It's like if someone's house is on fire and they run out, a bystander says "they've given up on living in a house". Cra-Cra.

Umm...

Quote:In 1919, tragedy struck the program when Gardner Dow, died on the field as a result of a nasty collision in a game against New Hampshire. The school named its football field after Dow; the field was located in the space occupied by the Co-Op (before 2003, when a new Co-Op was built across from Gampel Pavilion), the Homer Babbidge Library and the ITE Building.

Quote:Robustelli was even better in 1970, when UConn won another Yankee Conference title; the Huskies won three in four years, topping out with a superb 8-2-1 record in 1973.

That would be the end of UConn being a competitive team for a while. Between 1974 and 1985, UConn finshed above .500 exactly one time.

Quote:The first half of UConn's final decade as a Division I-AA saw the end of the Tom Jackson years. Jackson coached 11 years and won 62 games - third on the school's all-time list - but was let go after the 1993 season.

Jackson's second-to-last year included one of UConn's lowest moments ever: a 14-13 loss to Division II New Haven at Memorial Stadium on Sept. 5, 1992.

Quote:The Hartford Courant's archive reveals articles about the possibility of UConn upgrading its football team from as early as 1993. The school's board of trustees actually agreed to a conditional upgrade of the football program in 1994 - assuming it could build a I-A-worthy stadium somewhere in Connecticut - and commissioned then-athletic director Lew Perkins to find a way to transition the UConn program into a full Big East schedule by 2002.

This proved to be a bit tricky. For, you see, Storrs is not quite conducive to having large amounts of people driving on its two-lane roads at one time. If you've ever been to Gampel Pavilion for a big basketball game, you know what I'm talking about. Access to the campus is limited, and in 1997 the residents of the Storrs-Mansfield area rejected any proposal of a 30,000-seat stadium on the small rural campus.

No problem, it was thought. The New England Patriots, after all, were considering a move out of Foxboro, and the Connecticut legislature ponied up millions of dollars to build an NFL-caliber stadium in downtown Hartford. This new stadium, like the Civic Center did for UConn basketball in the 80's, would give UConn's football program a home and a good amount of credibility.

This too, proved to be just a dream. On April 30, 1999, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said that the deal with Hartford was off. He ended up getting beautiful Gillette Stadium out of the deal; UConn was SOL.

Perkins continued to look for any way to bring a I-A-caliber stadium to Connecticut - he "spent most of this decade chasing football stadiums the way Don Quixote chased windmills," said the Courant. Finally, there was a breakthrough. On Nov. 11, 1999, then-Gov. John Rowland announced plans to build an open-air, 40,000-seat football stadium on the Pratt & Whitney airfield in East Hartford, thanks to a 75-acre donation by United Technologies Corp.

With the final roadblock out of the way, UConn's acceptance into the Big East for football became a matter of time. Five days after the Rentschler Field plans became official, Perkins notified the Atlantic 10 that UConn would withdraw its membership following the 1999 season.

Construction at Rentschler began in October 2000, a month after UConn had played its first game as a Division I-A team. The stadium would open on Aug. 30, 2003 against Rutgers. UConn would join the Big East as a full member in 2005.

True, neither of those last two sentences ended up being true. But after 104 years of waiting, UConn was ready to make a leap into the big time.

So sure, a dead football player and an 11 year drought all pale in comparison to the awful decision of joining the AAC and have nothing to do with the awful decisions to hire Pasqualoni and Diaco.

Cra-cra

Did any of the former Big East teams decide to join the AAC? UConn, USF and Cincinnati were pretty much left behind by the Catholic 7. I’m not sure if any of the FB schools even got a heads up about what they were planning to do.

From about 2002-2012 UCONN was middle of the pack when compared to other current AAC members. ECU, Tulane and Memphis were all horrible for that decade. Plus they were in CUSA then. I know they were each in difference conferences. Since 2013 is when they pretty much cratered like mentioned by Quo.

I don't remember the year, but ECU won two CUSA titles in that period. They weren't horrible under Skip Holtz or Ruffin McNeil.

The C7 breakaway was talked about and prophesied for years before they finally pulled the trigger; if UConn, USF and Cincy were caught unawares, they only have themselves to blame.

Women’s basketball won’t get you a p5 invite, but good luck with that.

RE: Uconn Football Will Be Fine as an Independent
UConn football will be fine as an independent indeed. UConn vs UMass is a no brainer week 13 match up.

There is also NMSU, Liberty, Army, and BYU out there looking for November scheduling dates. The first two will be annual affairs. The other two may not be an every year guarantee but I would think Army would be amenable to playing late in the season most years.

There's also plenty of other Northeastern schools out there they can get on the schedule. Buffalo and Temple would likely do home and homes. Pitt, BC, Cuse, M'land, Rutgers, and WVU are also out there.

Toss in an FCS school and a buy game or two from a big boy each year and I think you still have an attractive schedule.

They just opened up a new locker room. So I give a no on that.

In case you haven't noticed, the AAC likes to spend tons of money on FB staffs, in upwards of 5 million as to what the other G5 leagues are spending. UConn realized it was a fools game.

What is going to get UConn into the B1G or ACC is if the men's basketball program can revive to the Top 10 level.

FB just has to stay upright in that time.

The big 14 could have grabbed UConn a long time ago if they wanted them. Same with the ACC. Its a pipe dream.

RE: Uconn Football Will Be Fine as an Independent
UConn football will not be "fine" as an independent. But the program can be "sufficient." Some UConn fans will spin it in a positive manner and some AAC fans will spin it in a negative way. Those of us who are reasonable and honest will note that the truth — and the future of Husky football — might sit squarely in the middle.

I suspect Maryland would much rather re-engage WVU and perhaps some ACC schools before it would seriously consider UConn, unless UConn can persuade Georgetown to play Maryland basketball.

Yes, it is so simple. These P5 colleges are going to want to play AT UConn. If UConn wants pay games, I will agree. It depends how UConn fans will deal with this. I hope it works for UConn.

UConn can win four national basketball championships in a row but that will not get them into a P5 league.

Unless they can gin up $30-40 million a year from that to pay for themselves, football program and all, then gin up a few extra million for each for the other schools in a P5 conference, then........ no shot.

The only path to a P5 league is to make a football splash with multiple conference championships and NY6 bowl wins. Lets see if BYU has figured that out yet... lol

RE: Uconn Football Will Be Fine as an Independent
How bad will 2020 be?

UConn
09/03 - UMass
09/12 - at Illinois
09/19 - Maine
09/26 - Indiana

Maine could probably be moved later to say 10/17 (helps both Maine and UConn fill schedule holes)

targets for 9/19 would be to convince Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech to host UConn instead of an FCS team, or to bring Old Dominion to East Hartford, or just travel to Florida International who still need two opponents. Coastal Carolina is also possible. One of those Five is likely to work out.

Army 10/10 is an open date. Army has only 5 home games, but they always have Navy Neutral site. This would be logical first part of a series.

New Mexico State 11/28 in Las Cruces. New Mexico State has only 5 home games, and they play at Hawai'i. The weather is still good in Las Cruces and makes a good first stop for a series.

Villanova needs 3 non-conference games. This is the obvious go to as a Big East partner for a 2nd FCS. Slot theme wherever is needed.

Arkansas needs 2 OOC games, and they make sense around 11/7.

TCU also has two open dates, but probably only the 9/19 works. A week 0 game against a P5 school like TCU, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, or FSU is possible if anyone one of them is willing to forego playing an FCS school.

UCLA has the Hawai'i rule as well and only 6 home games. Since they are playing week 0 they should have two byes during the P12 conference schedule, in in October and one in November. They should be given a call to see if a game can be arraigned or a 2 for 1 series.

Both SMU and UCF have open dates they have to fill with an FBS school (can't use FCS). Theses are likely to fall early October. The question is will either help UConn, maybe swapping a series in Football for series in Men's and Women's Basketball. I woudl not count on it, but I'd ask.

So what do I see:

UConn
09/03 - UMass
09/12 - at Illinois
09/19 - (Old Domonion or at Florida International or similar G5)
09/26 - Indiana
10/03 - OPEN
10/10 - (at Army)
10/17 - Maine // moved from 9/9
10/24 - OPEN
10/31 - OPEN
11/07 - (at Arkansas)
11/14 - (Villanova)
11/21 - OPEN
11/28 - (at New Mexico State)

To get to 11, which is probably the minimum acceptable schedule, they need to find a game in October to buy out and play each side of the game, going to the one hosting that date and hosting the other on one of their open dates. The 12th logically would be some P5 UConn can find who would take them in place of some FCS school they have yet to sign.

A lot of things have to go right just to get the above. The AD will really have to work to get even half of the above.

2021 is better. There are multiple P5 schools at the level which UConn has gotten home and road series with open dates. Getting a couple series like the Indiana and Illinois in '19 and '20 goes a long way to fill the schedule with better opponents. Another year of lead time allows some G5 to agree to October games. UMass and NMSU should start filling November slots.

I can't see it. Tell me the scenario that you envision which ends with UConn in a P5 conference.

If the three eastern P6 conferences go to 16 and it’s not st the expense of the big 12, and/or the big xii goes to 14.

I’m it saying either are likely, but there’s your scenario.
