Because it does nothing to increase their profile
The Memphis utk base will not rally around them more because they play a random opponent here. The issue is not whether they have large numbers of alumni. It is whether okaying the game does anything for them that would offset losing a home game
I agree. On the surface, I don't see how playing a game in Memphis against a neutral opponent helps them in any way. They get 100K for every game in Neyland. They would lose at least 40K in capacity alone by playing at the LBMS. They have a pretty large contingent of fans here, but it's not like they need to go on a roadshow to keep or grow that base. Their core is solid, even if they have stunk for a long time.
Apparently you haven't been paying attention. Last season they hit 100,000 only once. Of their 7 home games, 3 didn't even draw 90,000.
And that's announced fans. I've seen pics of some of those crowds, like the Missouri game where it was really bad!!
Wow, not even 90k made it to the stadium? They are in shambles. I remember when we couldn't draw 90k. I am sure glad those days are over.
They just spent enough money on their stadium to pay for half of a new stadium for us. They have debt to pay.

RE: Vols wanting to play football in LBMS?
All of the white trash Wal-Mart UT fans from the 90s, the “I’m a huge Peyton fan but I’ve never been to Neyland” crowd, have become Alabama fans over the last 6-7 years. This fall, notice how many people ride around with A flags on their vehicles. Those used to be the stupid orange T flags that would fly all summer until Florida beat them in September every year.

Won’t happen in next decade if not several more. Tigers could always say we can’t schedule around Heritage Classic and UT game also.
Tigers don't get a say do they? This would be between the city and UT since the city owns the LB.
Tiger's are the primary tenant in an aging stadium who have been a fantastic partner for the city. The city should, and probably will, look after our best interests.

Years ago, UT used to play either Ole Miss, Miss State, or Ark in Memphis so fans from both schools could attend.

That was a relic of a much older time.
Ole Miss ain't ever playing games in Jackson again.

RE: Vols wanting to play football in LBMS?
I would be against it. While we may not compete with them for players we do compete with them for fans. Id like to get to a point where someday everything west of Jackson or better yet, the Tennessee river, is all about the Univ of Memphis.
I’m talking the everyday folk who follow ut simply because it’s the state school or generational fans who root because mom and dad did. Instead of standing around the water cooler talking about the vols, give them reason to talk Tigers. I’d prefer they stay out of this market.

A 6 win Tennessee team isn't getting more than 20K in Memphis against an FCS opponent. There's not that many Vols fans here, not much more than any other SEC school.
It's not the 90s anymore. Times have changed.
Don't forget the Vol fans in West Tennessee counties other than Shelby.

Based on what?
92.9 just did a poll the other day and from that poll I would say they have a huge presence in the Memphis area.

Based on the fact that I live in Memphis and see minimal support for Tennessee despite nominally being in the same state.
Memphis is almost as close to Tulsa as it is Knoxville.

I live in Memphis and I see tons of support for Tennessee.
What does distance have to do with it when there has always been a large contingent of UTk fans here in Memphis.

They definitely do not get 100k for every home game but the point is the same
No value for them to give up a home game

Nope, I get around lots of areas inside 240 daily and work in a business that gives me a lot of sports fans watching their teams.
Tennessee isn't one that requires a lot of focus.

RE: Vols wanting to play football in LBMS?
Yeah, the difference in fans is not 100k minus 65k. They ain't drawing that for an FCS game at either place.
UTK would want to charge about $100 a ticket for the suffering of traveling to this end of the state, and the privilege of us locals getting to see them. They ain't getting a big local crowd of casual rednecks to pay $100 a ticket.
