Commissioner Aresco Comments
Some good stuff here straight from Commissioner Mike...

Quote:American Athletic Conference commissioner Mike Aresco remained upbeat about the future of the league on the day UConn announced it leaving to re-join the Big East Conference.

Aresco said the AAC is bolstered by a firm commitment from UCF and other members pushing to help the league become a power conference.

“It’s my job to do what’s in the best interest of our conference and we’re in a very strong position,” Aresco told the Orlando Sentinel Thursday afternoon. “My first reaction was this is nothing like seven years ago and the key is, we’re not going to waver at all to our commitment of competing at the highest national level in football, men’s and women’s basketball and Olympic sports.

“We have a Power 6 campaign that’s been energized by our TV deal, we’re going to continue to move forward with that and we’re going to continue to pursue autonomy and in that sense, not a thing has changed. It’s hasn’t changed our outlook one bit.”

Aresco said he wasn’t aware of UConn’s intent to leave for the Big East until this week but he admitted there have been rumbling surrounding the school’s dissatisfaction with the AAC’s new media rights deal with ESPN.

“Our goal was to make sure we treated UConn well and treated them like a valuable member of the conference, and I’m completely satisfied that we did and then the rest of it is up to them,” said Aresco. “They obviously thought through what they were doing and made their decision for whatever reasons are and we’re moving on.”

The Big East doesn’t support football and UConn has said it does not want to drop its program down to the Football Championship Subdivision level, so the Huskies are looking for a new home.

Aresco said the league has no intention of inviting UConn to remain as a football-only member.

The Huskies face a $10 million exit fee that could increase to $12 million if the school leaves before the 27-month grace period listed in the AAC bylaws. That remains up to the school at this point.

“They’re required to stay through July 1, 2022, and it’s going to be up to them whether they approach us and try to negotiate an early exit. It’s going to be up to them, not to us," Aresco said.

Aresco said the league will host several conference calls during the coming days including some with athletics directors to discuss where the AAC goes from here, including whether to look at adding new schools or sticking with 11 members in football.

One topic sure to be up for discussion is the impact of UConn’s decision on the league’s new media rights deal. The 12-year deal, which is set to go into effect in 2020, is reportedly worth $1 billion and, according to a report by the Sports Business Journal, there’s a clause that would allow ESPN to renegotiate if a member departs.

Aresco declined to address the TV agreement due to the sensitive nature of any negotiations moving forward. Despite some uncertainty, he said the remaining AAC teams are working together.

“They are totally united, not even a question," Aresco said when asked about the stability of the remaining AAC schools. "Everybody is really happy about the league and what we’re doing. They’re ready to move on. No issues at all. There’s been tremendous solidarity.”

UCF officials declined to comment on UConn’s departure Thursday, deferring to Aresco to speak on behalf of the league.

While he refused to place a deadline on the matter, Aresco said he believes the league will have a better understanding of things by its football preseason media day in Newport, R.I., on July 15.

“We’re not going to move with any haste, but on the other hand, we don’t want to wait too long. We’ll be very deliberate," Aresco said. “We’ll be deliberate whether we want to do anything about the membership at this point, but we’re in the best shape that we’ve ever been in in our history and this won’t change anything."

On the subject of possible expansion, Aresco said the league has the luxury of not having to do anything if it chooses, but there are of course options.

“You’re not going to add anyone who doesn’t enhance your brand or enhance the strength of the conference," Aresco said. “And we’re very powerful now so it would take a lot to do that. You do not in any way want to diminish your brand. We worked too hard to build it.

“You want people that want to come first of all and there might not be anyone who wants to join for whatever reason. The second thing is that you want a good cultural and strategic fit.

"And if there’s one out there and it brings strength to the conference then you would be foolish not to consider it. We can be deliberate and we can be thoughtful."

The Commissioner Speaketh

RE: Commissioner Aresco Comments
Another article from CBS...

Quote:American Athletic Conference athletic directors will meet by conference call Friday to discuss the future of the league following the loss of UConn, two sources told CBS Sports.

The call will be led by commissioner Mike Aresco, and it is expected to be mostly informational. The general feeling around the AAC is that it should stay at 11 football-playing members, according to several sources.

However, that could change.

Any permanent decision on membership going forward would have to be made by AAC presidents.

CBS Sports previously reported that UConn will not be allowed to stay in the AAC as a football-only member. That hasn't stopped speculation that other football-only members could be added.

BYU, Arkansas State, Boise State, Liberty and Old Dominion are among those that have been mentioned as possible AAC football additions.

"The University of Connecticut has announced its withdrawal from the American Athletic Conference," Aresco said in a statement Thursday following the publication of this story. "We wish UConn well. We will next address the exit procedure mandated by our conference bylaws. Our conference will continue to move forward in pursuit of its national goals in football, men's and women's basketball, and Olympic sports."

Staying at 11 football members would not be an unusual decision by the ACC. The Big Ten played with 11 members for two decades after adding Penn State in 1990. However, staying at 11 would make the AAC the smallest FBS conference next to the Big 12 and Sun Belt (10 each).

Perhaps the AAC's biggest issue is its new ESPN deal that pays the league $1 billion over 12 years. With a membership of 12, AAC teams were set to receive approximately $7 million per year. CBS Sports reported last week that the ESPN contract contains language that allows for renegotiation if the AAC loses members.

Industry sources say there are few, if any, schools that could be added to the league that bring that $7 million annual valuation.

In 2016, the Big 12 years ago spearheaded an NCAA rule change allowing conferences with less than 12 schools to stage a conference championship game.

The 12-team minimum had been in place since 1992.

AAC officials will next meet in person July 15-16 at the conference's football media days in Newport, Rhode Island.

Question: Where can we find out the actual, current rules for conference championship games? Does the NCAA have that on a site somewhere?

My Google search found a lot of articles that sounded like some guy pontificating on his basement couch. (I am less interested in what you THINK the rule is or ought to be.)
Thanks

RE: Commissioner Aresco Comments
UCONN has been so bad in recent years, most any replacement mentioned would probably improve conference RPI. But national perception remains a more critical aspiration for the American. So you simply can't add a little known brand, even with strong recent success or great potential and continue to push the P6 narrative.

Conversely, adding BYU brings a big bump in quality and brand value. After that, it would seem staying at eleven football schools makes more sense.

Maybe it's now in ESPN's best interest financially to broker an arranged marriage for BYU and the American?

I bet that isn't sourced. OD is interesting. That is a pretty decent population metro area, Tidewater, Newport, Hampton and a hell of a good football recruiting hotbed.

Yeah, I mean, they could legitimately become the next USF in a few years...people forget, the Bulls football program just turned 22 overall and 18 in FBS years, and was admitted to the Big East when they were only 4. I could see ODU turning into something with the VA Beach area and the amount of good football and basketball in VA and NC. And even though they do have a smaller than desired stadium, they have sold out literally every D1 football game in their history, which is something that definitely can't be said about our other small stadium brethren. I'd be ok with adding them, as I could see them being a .500 football team and turning into something in basketball with how solid the recruiting grounds are in DC and NC.

Public research institution with a growing enrollment in a Top 30 media market and a Top 10 population state WITHIN our geographic footprint? I'd take 'em if BYU doesn't work out, they have greater potential than any of the other candidates listed for various reasons.

I found the answer to my fb conference championship question on the NCAA web site. It took a couple of different searches for it to come up.

Apparently, as long as the play within the division is round robin, we can play a championship game. So I am fine with staying at 11 teams for a while with unbalanced divisions until the right candidate presents themselves.

"allows conferences with fewer than 12 members to hold championship games in football, as long as they meet one of two additional conditions: Conferences that want to play championship games must either play their championship game between division winners after round-robin competition in each division or between the top two teams in the conference standings following full round-robin, regular-season competition between all members of the conference."

It would be cool to play everybody, every year. We'd have a "true champion", just like the Big 1(0)2 A 10 game conference slate (5 home, 5 away) would make sense.

Aresco wants to get a waiver from the NCAA, 8 game conference schedule. 4 ooc.
Top 2 teams play in CCG.

ODU is a sneaky pick. This forum goes on and on about how these potential schools don't generate any excitement, or tip the needle, but A decade ago UC did not tip the needle either.

AAC should expand, but only when/if they find the right school. ODU has about 20,000 students and is in a great area for football and basketball talent. Their stadium may be small, but they pack it. A stadium packed full of 20,000 fans is much better than the empty seats in the 32,000 Gerald Ford Stadium.

We need to find a school that is committed to spending money to try and compete. It's possible that would be ODU, or maybe it is Georgia St or Buffalo. The AAC making an investment at a school with good leadership will go a long way.

In 2006 I could sprawl between multiple rows of seats in the student section, by the time I was a senior I had to buy season tickets. A school who is committed to spending money will eventually "move the needle."

UC is 2006 was a household name because of basketball. They'd been a top 10 basketball program for a decade and a half. They were a national brand even if their football wasn't what it needed to be.

A decade ago Cincinnati finished top 10 in the nation in football and went to a BCS bowl. What are you talking about?

The AAC is not adding ODU, Buffalo, or Georgia State. They will stay at 11 before adding any of those schools. Can we quit talking about this nonsense?

I'm sorry for not using exact numbers... 12 to 13 years ago. Please point to how UC moved the needle in 2006 or 2007. The stands were pretty barren in 2006, and we had two or 3 bowl wins in 70 years.

I used those three schools as an example. With the correct leadership and vision any of those schools could become good. Will they ever get there? No idea, but UCF, Boise, TCU, and UC were barely blips on the radar 20 years ago.

That's not what the FB-centric posters here think!

I would stay at 11, as long as the waiver is granted of course.
