Well luckily the Big West isn't where they would be putting their sports. The WAC is, who if you add certain MW schools would be an equal or better basketball league and roughly the same travel. You get SoCal and Pheonix for recruiting plus your normal stomping grounds.

You take BYU, CSU, AFA and add them to the WAC and that's a pretty solid all conference at 10, lure Denver in and you get a nice compact western conference with good sports and solid markets plus the 20 game full round robin.

Not sure BYU would leave the WCC and high school gyms but they might.

Yeah, no.

I doubt BYU would leave a conference with Gonzaga and St. Mary's to join the WAC, regardless of who from the MWC came along.

And if a couple of MWC schools were to move football to the AAC and basketball to the WAC, how would the MWC respond? Remember "the Project"? In that scenario I could see the MWC inviting NMSU and GCU to join as non-football members, with the incentive for NMSU being a multi-game late-season football scheduling agreement. That would allow the MWC to play round-robins in both football (with 10 teams) and basketball (with 11 teams) while destabilizing the WAC in the process.

So the MWC's worst year is still better than that WAC's best. And yeah, they will be eager to fly to Chicago State, Texas-Rio Grande Valley, St. George Utah, Cal Baptist, and a for profit money (it still is) school.

14 - 15 - 16 team conferences might work for the SEC, B-10, Pac-12, and ACC with payouts of well over $30 million dollars to each member but it won't work with the G5 / Tweener conferences where the future top payout is $7 million dollars for the AAC "with 12 members". Too many mouths to feed puts everyone in the poor house. The AAC is not going above 12 FB and 12 BB members because it would mean taking money out of their own future coffers. Each new all sport member or combination FB only / BB-Olympic Sport only must be worth at least $7 million dollars to keep UConn's 1/12th share to be worthy of AAC membership. The AAC wants to stay even on the next contract that was just negotiated or it wants to get ahead of it. Not fall behind. 04-cheers

I would agree---however, in this case---I would say there is a slim possibility that something similar to that could happen. I only say that because BYU and the MW are currently in TV deal negotiations right now. So, the relatively unique timing of all these events occurring at the same time might allow something like that to happen with the AAC deal being bumped up on a pro-rata basis to cover the cost of those key additions (with most or all of the cost largely being borne by eliminating the need for a separate BYU deal and reduced need to purchase as much MW content). But, Im guessing the group would only add 3 of BYU/Boise/CSU/AF.

That's originally what Boise planned to do, put basketball in the WAC. If they tried it again maybe the MWC counters with inviting Seattle instead of NMSU? Keeping a presence in the Pacific Northwest would serve the MWC well.

Maybe the MWC invites all three of NMSU, GCU and Seattle then. That would suck for multiple reasons.

Please take Colorado State, that would raise the MW rating and lower the AACs, perfect fit.

I got ripped on this board and accused of being an AAC hater (I am not), just because I said the head LDS honchos oppose them joining the AAC. BYU not coming, but feel free to take CSU.

It wont have the same brand impact as UConn---but VCU probably more than replaces the UConn performance over the last 5 years and is a very solid basketball brand name. For football---for now---do nothing. The loss of UConn football is actually addition by subtraction so the SOS and computer conference strength ratings for the AAC will improve---while preserving the AAC ability to add a school later if someone emerges from the pack as a clear and obvious #12.

We need a women's lacrosse team. VCU fields that sport. Outside of Army, all of the other rumored candidates do not.

Ooooop, guess the only way to work that would be San Jose.

If the AAC takes a MWC school it definitely makes the AAC number 6 not P6 but sixth.

Thats always been true. The rest is just semantics. They are #6 out of 10. You can represent yourself as "being part of the top 6" or "part of the worst 5"----which sounds better?

Well, for the doubters, now we know at least one reason why CSU might potentially be interested in the AAC. The expert in the article sets a range for the MW deal that would translate to somewhere between 2.8 million per school and $666K per school.

They’re currently between the CBS deal and the ESPN deal somewhere in the $16, $17 million-a-year range. If ESPN-Plus is interested, they could double that easily. If ESPN is not interested, they could be looking at a 50 percent haircut.”

I am sure CSU would accept if the AAC took their Basketball and other Olympic sports. That is the hang up.

It just comes down to convincing the Eastern schools (Cincy, ECU, UCF, USF, Temple) to put up with some travel to the Mountain time zone.

But, Im guessing the group would only add 3 of BYU/Boise/CSU/AF.

The whole MWC might be applying with your numbers from post #56. I read that article in between posting. 666k - 2.5 million a year. Close the gates and turn off the phone. The applications will be flying in from all of the MW schools if those contract numbers become reality. 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 01-france 03-talktothehand 04-bolt 04-cheers

Let’s wait and see, of course. But yeah $2.5m would be a real slap in the face. Problem for MWC is that they’re only getting (reportedly) $1.1m now. Honest question: what’s changed since they signed the current contract(s)?

Why would CSU give away their rivalries with Air Force and Wyoming? Even if they didn't have such deep ties to the MWC, it's not like the AAC is a huge upgrade from them, at least on the football field. Whatever they'd make in TV money they'd lose at the gate, since they'd be playing a bunch of schools their fanbase doesn't care about.
