NIU Freshman Orientation
Attended the freshmen orientation for my third child going to NIU today. They did a great job and there was a good size group. Not sure of this Fall's freshmen enrollment number, but today had a good buzz about.

That said, the best moment of the day was when the presenter asked everyone to buy Huskie gear before they left town. She continued that she did not want to see all of them decked out in Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State gear. She was very passionate about it.... I loved hearing that Huskie pride which was part of the entire day.

That is all, not much of a thread piece, but a moment of Huskie "puff the chest" today brought out by some proud NIU employees today.

Go Huskies!!!04-rock

Did she tell the students with the moms and dads that one out of ten will not make it to their sophomore year at NIU?

I can’t stand negative comments like this.

Every school has kids leave, perhaps NIU is slightly higher than average. I’m sure NIU is trying to improve....and I am sure the guides are not going to say crap like that.

Sorry to be harsh, but l choose positivity

I think the statistic is higher than that. But that is not an NIU exclusive problem. I knew of so many kids to drop out before their sophomore year. Including my roommate, and many friends. But that's the culture of college in general. Many figure out down the road that college isn't their thing. And some join the military, transfer to community college or another university. Whether that be because of programs they are interested in or to be closer to home. College is all about finding yourself.

What is alarming is declining enrollment, but that is currently a statewide issue.

Emphasising and building Huskie Pride seems to be a welcome initiative of President Freeman. It is refreshing and I admire her for making a strong effort to change our culture for the better.

RE: NIU Freshman Orientation
Building Huskie Pride overall is so critical. This has taken some hits as of late, so when I witness a NIU employee beaming and proud of NIU it just feels good. Just the vibe of the whole orientation was so positive. Sat at a table with one incoming freshman who is coming to DeKalb from North Carolina. I assumed he might be an athlete, but he said no, he just really wanted to come to NIU. This was a case where not charging out of state tuition was a deciding factor for him

Just checked---since the internet is such a wealth of information---dropout rate of college freshman is 30%. If 1 out of 10 don't make it to the sophomore year--let's write this as 9 out 10 do and make it a visibly positive statement.

Good pot and sports gambling will get NIU back over 20K within 10 years hopefully.

NIU Freshman Orientation
It’s amazing to me how far the NIU influence extends. I am on a little vacation now in Michigan, and we met people who went to NIU and/or are from DeKalb. This happens EVERYWHERE I go - even Mexico. All I need to do is wear one of my NIU shirts (which I always do). Happens all the time. Unfortunately, however, most of these people don’t attend the games. I always tell them that we do and they should, too. If even less than half of those with connections to NIU attend some games, we’d have standing room only.

+1

Wear the gear when you travel. I’ve been stopped often within the USA and in other countries. Great way to meet alums and hear their stories.

I work at a relatively small company in Sarasota Florida and there are 3 NIU alumni here. I see NIU apparel when out and about all the time.

+1- NIU alumni are everywhere and always fun to connect with on the road. One note I think we can all relate to is I do get a fair amount of people who think I am wearing Nebraska Husker gear.

That hasn't happened to me because I usually wear something with the Huskie dog head logo and/or "NIU "or "Northern Illinois" lettering.

If we beat Nebraska again, they may think the Nebraska fans are wearing NIU stuff!

You think NIU is bad, try going to Michigan or Ohio and dealing with MAC grads. Their allegiance is to MSU, UM or OSU. They could care less where they went to college. Means nothing when it comes to athletics. Some even cheer against their alma mater

Walked into the new Shake Shack in Vernon Hills the other day with my Huskie gear on and an employee behind the counter said, "I like your shirt". If I weren't wearing the shirt, I wouldn't have met Anthony Wells, DE 2013. Turns out he manages that location. Great burgers and Huskie pride! 04-cheers

I spent the last 27 years of my career working in Columbus, Ohio. While there is a ton of support for the Buckeyes from MAC grads there is also a lot of school pride from graduates of Ohio U. and Miami University. I often wish that NIU alums would have as much HUSKIE pride. One thing that I have admired so far about President Freeman is her efforts to encourage more of that.

I wear a lot of Huskie gear and am always running into NIU alumni in Florida. Great conversation starter.

My daughters go to UCF and FIU respectively and I'll fly their colors at their football games, but it's NIU gear 98% of the time.

My daughters grew up wearing NIU shirts, and still wear NIU shirts all the time. They wore them to school "team" days when they were kids.

I guess they want to stay in the will.
