RE: OSU Cushiest Start to season
OSU was originally slated to play TCU this year, but that turned into a 1 year deal after ESPN bought the game and put it in Texas Stadium last year. Generally, they always have one marquee P5 opponent to start the season, and I do applaud them doing home and home series with teams and not playing neutral site games.

Anything with "ESPN" on it is not going to be flattering to us...

UC has never done it on the field, it being a win over an elite team. I like everything Fickell is doing, but until it results in an on-field upset, we're always going to get this criticism.

Sadly, you're not wrong. Boise State's entire national identity is based on their one win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. It's time to take that next step as a program and get that identity-changing victory.

Mostly true although 20 years ago the W against Wisconsin would qualify. They won the the Big Ten and Rose Bowl that year.

I believe we also beat a Virginia Tech team (14-3?) which was their only loss on the season where they went to one of the top bowls.

I think you have to do it nationally televised (like UCF gameday) or in a meaningful bowl, which now means New Years or playoff. Winning one of those BCS appearances would have helped.

It sure felt that way when time expired that day at Nippert--a signature win I'm glad I witnessed.

The difference between now and then was that Minter had a number of quality wins during his tenure but never could turn the corner with a breakout season. So the casual fan viewed it as a fluke, along with Minter's other impressive wins over Kentucky, Boston College and a handful of others.

Our fan base has now grown in part by consistent winning seasons and bowl appearances so the bar is higher. I would agree that the final building block will be knocking off an acknowledged power program. UCLA in the Rose Bowl was a shining moment, although their season went south in a hurry. Few here expected that one. So let's dream big about being the first Ohio team to knock off the Buckeyes since horse and buggy days.

With a Heisman Trophy RB (Ron Dayne).

We also beat Penn State in 1983-- who had just won the National Championship the previous season.

RE: OSU Cushiest Start to season
Let's be honest. ANY team going in to the Horseshoe and coming out with a win is very rare indeed. This has been especially true during the Tressel and Meyer eras. The Cats need to make sure they come out of Nippert with a win against UCLA because starting off 0-2 against the P5 would be a momentum killer. That said, the real key to raising our national profile is to play a meaningful game in January and winning. Until we do that, we're really just another G5 program from the perspective of the national media and the college sports world in general. The good news is we have a real opportunity to win our conference chip this season and get a Cotton Bowl invite.

I was hoping to see UC on this list also but, as long as Miami of Ohio is on our schedule, our OOC schedule won't be considered difficult.

Bolded, well said. One could make the argument that beating UCLA at home is more critical than hoping for an unlikely upset in the horseshoe. It would give our season the credibility of once again defeating a big brand Pac 12 program. Follow that up with a competitive battle in Columbus and then win the American. Sure, we always want to beat OSU, but it's one game and the season won't swing on it, especially if the hometown fans fill Nippert for a victory over UCLA and come back for more in the conference race.

Wins over the Bruins two years in a row would bode well for this season and beyond.

As long as we continue to get p5 opponents and another good G5 team on the schedule, I don't see how Miami can be singled out. Most P5 conference teams East of the Mississippi beat up/struggle with MAC/CUSA/Sun Belt teams every year.

I just thought I'd make a negative comment about Miami...of Ohio. 05-deadhorse
