Your confusing TCU with Tulane. No issues with the Frogs but when they got a better deal from the Big 12, they took the Big 12 offer. To its credit, they kept their word and paid the Big East exit fee even though they had never technically entered the conference. They left on good terms.

The addition of Tulane and ECU did stir up the independence movement among the basketball schools. Previous football additions had some semblance of basketball at places like Memphis, SMU, Houston, etc., but basketball at Tulane had about as much national impact as football at Georgetown.

Last year's Green Wave averaged less than 1,500 a game.

They had no issue with UCF because they did everything asked of them since being rejected in the previous round, especially from a facilities standpoint.

I still think to this day Aresco added Tulane on purpose along with ECU to flesh out the basketball schools.

It's a big boost for UConn, and the Big East.

Win-Win. 07-coffee3

Except it's a lose-lose for their football program. They essentially become another UMass in football. If they decide to keep FBS football.

I understand their decision to go with the Big East such as playing close, traditional rivals in basketball. This move, however, makes zero sense for football. It essentially waves the white flag on football forever (or at least until the next round of major shakeups, assuming UConn is even able to get in on that).

I think the thing that it absolutely does is make it where if Big 12 is gutted, and they do a new best of conference with the carcas of the Big 12, UConn has absolutely no chance of getting in on that at all.

Well, it worked.

Tulane was only approved by the C7; ECU was not (voted-in as a full-member). However, it was widely assumed by C7 leadership that ECU was eventually going to become a full-member (they were accepted shortly after the C7 left).

Bigger picture, at the time, it was no secret that the basketball schools were "less than thrilled" with the new football-first programs coming in (especially those with historically weak basketball programs). However, the basketball schools voted-in these schools because of assurances from the (then) leadership that the allure of the big markets would maintain the revenue payouts and exposure for the league (which obviously didn't happen). After the Tulane/ECU additions, it was shortly afterwards where the rumored payout figures started to float around, which pushed the C7 to separate (and eventually sign with Fox).

In retrospect, there was never a grand conspiracy about the split between Big East basketball and football; in the end, the money simply wasn't enough to keep the marriage happy and moving forward.

UConn already had no chance of getting into the P5 world.....

That (and a hefty athletic budget in the RED) is why they have thrown in the towel.

I think the thing that it absolutely does is make it where if Big 12 is gutted, and they do a new best of conference with the carcas of the Big 12, UConn has absolutely no chance of getting in on that at all.

Many need to remember that UConn Football, as an FBS/D1 member, is not even twenty years old. This isn't a program that has spent decades as part of the highest levels of college football; it spent over 100 years combined in what was the A-10, Yankee and New England conferences. UConn made the attempt (unsuccessfully) to be a true big-time college football player; arguably, there were many mistakes by the school in the pursuit of this dream, but they are where they need to be today and moving forward (in the Big East).

And to Stever's point about the Big 12 - that would have only kicked the can further down the road for UConn Athletics. Yes, the Big 12 may get picked apart (I have strong doubts that it will), causing a number of call-ups from the AAC/MWC, which would grant another life-line to UConn and others; however, the payouts for that conference still would not be in the same ballpark as the (then) P4, you are still playing a cross-country schedule in football and Olympic sports, forcing fans and athletes into a "best of the rest" Frankenstein-like conference that is born out of survival.

Much like the C7's decision to move away from football, UConn - for the first time ever in realignment - is choosing a path that it can control and, more importantly, be successful following (being a basketball-first athletics program).
