RE: The Xavier Switcheroo
It's appropriate we've scheduled them for our Homecoming game this year. I'm guessing the team will have no trouble getting up for that one. No Maction weeknight for a send off.

RE: The Xavier Switcheroo
I don't understand why we would want to be jealous of X for being in the Big East. It's not the same Big East we actually liked.

It's a better basketball conference, but not so much so that it would even be worth thinking about nuking football. It's a solid conference, not great, not terrible. They found a group of like minded schools and reached their ceiling, the 4thish best basketball conference. Good for them.

Why in the world would anyone get excited about playing St John's, Providence, or DePaul on a regular basis? Honestly, the conference tournament location is by far the most attractive asset.

UConn looks like they are reaching for the past with this move. Good luck to them.

This is dead on. I'm not the least bit jealous of Xavier. That conference is lucky it had Villanova during its absolute apex. They've been carrying a ton of weight for them and inflated the conferences performance. It still doesn't get the viewers or the numbers of the p5. The AAC and Big East are playing in the same area...well below the P5 in terms of value and well above the rest. They were pretty close last year in objective numbers (despite the AAC still have the Tulane/ECU anchors) and I expect that will continue to be the case.

But let me provide you with a trolling tip: you should have said "in a league with ECU". Tulsa isn't the worst program in the conference historically. In fact, they have better ncaa tourney history than 90% of the MAC schools. They would probably rule the MAC. ECU on the other hand....

This.

It's highly depressing. If I were a Miami fan or Xavier fan or a tri-state OSU fan, I'd be gloating too.

The fact that Xavier is considered the one who plays in a "Big Boy Conference" with UC being in a "mid-major" is complete Bizzaro world when you consider the resources we have, our history, brand strength nationally, media exposure, alumni base, size of the schools, corporate partners, etc. Heck, XU gets bumped on the radio dial if their games are being played at the same time as UC.

I can't think of any situation quite like it. Villanova outshines Temple in Philly but the Wildcats have a better history, larger fan base, the corporate backing, etc.

The Big East isn't a "Big Boy" conference. It's a tweener conference like the AAC. Because of Villanova (and not having ECU/Tulane) it's been more successful in recent years, but both leagues are far behind the "big boy" leagues in resources and reach (and significantly above the other leagues in resources and reach).

You and I know that, but go ask a random person on the street their perceptions of the two conferences. Heck go ask many sports media members. In hindsight, the AAC made a mistake in selling off the name of the conference to the C7. The current group still gets a lot of the juice from the legacy left behind by the schools that left for the ACC+WVU, UC.

So true. If UC was still in a conference named the "Big East" in football and basketball it would carry a lot of weight--the power of a successful brand. And with Houston and UCF winning major bowls around New Year's, some casual fans wouldn't perceive much difference in football from BCS 6 days believing those were "Big East" teams beating Auburn and Florida State.

But I too continue to be amazed how many folks around this town think Xavier's "Big East" is the same one UC competed in a few short years ago. On the other hand it was a devil's dilemma: UC needed that big stack of cash from selling the conference name in order to fund the success we've enjoyed of late on field and court.

Bottom line: Bearcat football and basketball have to keep winning big. If so, UC won't be denied its rightful place among high majors when the next door opens.

I agree that the brand was powerful.

But selling the name to them was the right thing to do. They had much more history in the Big East and they deserved it. Four of the C7 were founding members of the Big East.

Even from a purely economic point of view, the brand was worth more to them them than it was to us. They gave us the entire $110 million from exit fees and NCAA tourney units in exchange for the name and the MSG contract.

I don't know this to be factual, but they have cited that in all sports it will save them money on travel. Obviously there are the outlier schools in the new big east, but overall this might be the case. Certainly makes it easier for alumni/fans to see more road games, but ultimately Jim Calhoun is not there as coach which is and has been an issue. I like Hurley, but he's got big shoes to fill, and Uconn was never Kentucky or Duke in recruiting. If you think about it, if you really have a big "brand" to begin with, you shouldn't be blaming your drop off on recruiting. If that's the case, you probably didn't have it like you thought.

Good question. Mods actually ban UC fans but not a Cryami Troll.

How about complaining about mods via PM?

Ding, ding, ding. John Calhoun was basketball royalty. The UConn basketball program isn't until it proves otherwise.

I like the Big East because although it isn't the old Big East, it also is a conference that doesn't have ECU, Tulsa and Tulane.

And while DePaul, Seton Hall, and St. Johns are no powerhouses, they are certainly better names than our worst three.'

Its just a conference with more brand power from top to bottom.

ECU, Tulsa and Tulane are KILLERS in hoops prestige.

Can't argue with any of your assessment of the New BIG EAST.....And the conference men's basketball tournament at MSG is way beyond cool, but I would never blow up my football program to become a member of the NBE.

This is a great point. Calhoun might be the most undervalued coach of the modern era. He won three national championships and was largely responsible for number 4. Since that magical title run when they've gotten further away from Calhoun era, they have been GENEROUSLY a middle of the pack aac team.

That is my view is why i have doubts about UConn turning it around. I do think UConn was a bad fit for the American. I also believe their basketball program has more value in the Big East. None of that is worth killing off football when making great hires and scheduling intelligently would solve both revenue sports problems.

I see UConn becoming Georgetown, basically wishing things were like they used to be. Cincinnati has been lucky enough have had multiple coaches win in both major sports to avoid being one coach school. In some ways is a blessing that both Huggins and Cronin left become hitting 20 plus years at one school. It gives the next guy and the guy after that and the guy after that a chance.
