RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
I think the Cronin v Minter comparisons are solid.

Both Cronin and Minter had "Success" at UC.
Both Cronin and Minter had "taken the program as far as he could go..." and it became obvious that they could not take "the next step" or move "to the next level."
Both Cronin and Minter were stubborn and demanded their will be imposed on their players...whether the players were "happy" about it or not. (Remember the knee braces?)
Both Cronin and Minter failed to recruit "local talent"...Minter because he said he didn't want to "waste his time trying to recruit kids who would never come to UC" and Mick, well, for whatever reasons.

I think Minter is one of the under-rated coaches at UC...I look pretty favorably on the job he did overall. (And yes, I have thoroughly "let go" of his tenure and "moved on.") My hope is that, as time moves on, I will have a similar reaction to Mick's time. Quickly my frustration at Mick is fading and I have no real ill feelings about Mick jumping ship. I think he and Minter both hit their ceilings here...which is not a terrible thing. Better to "hit your ceiling" than to have "unrealized potential."

C'est la vie.

Great Post

He did, but Gino was an exception. And, dare I say it, Gino was from "across the river." Minter was well known for not even trying with the local Cincinnati schools and he would flat-out say that he didn't think he (and UC) "had a chance" with the local talent and so he didn't want to "waste time trying to chase a kid who would never come here."

And, I'll even give Minter a brief nod to the fact that we were playing in CUSA at that time...a CUSA that was still a basketball-centric creation. So Minter was fighting an uphill battle with the Big Ten, Notre Dame, and even the Big East and the MAC which were all established as football conferences and would raid the Cincinnati High Schools with impunity. But to completely disregard the local talent and not even make an effort...insanity.

He got lucky to get Gino. Gino committed to UK and then pulled out when they got busted by the NCAA.

Dejuan Gossett. Some of safeties whose names escape me right now. They might have been transfers.

What about Brad Jackson, Robert Tate, Artrell Hawkins, and there was a big O-tackle around 95 or 96 who went pro...cannot remember his name. He was 6'7 or some such. Really good.

Pretty sure tate was a Murphy recruit. Also I was specifically trying to name local recruits.

Artrell Hawkins was from Johnstown PA - of great flood fame.
