Interesting read, I've coached high school softball for 5 years now and I have to say I've not really experienced this.....but softball is not a sport that lends itself to a future pro career. I would imagine the 3 dominant male sports are where the worst of it is. I've heard stories about JMU athletes with these parents, and I do wonder when I see a head-scratching transfer whether the parents influenced the decision.

The biggest takeaway from that article for me is that 2 people in apparent sound mind actually moved away from Hawaii to relocate to Alabama. I don't know if that is being great parents, snowplowing or whatever...or, early signs of serious brain damage.
Carry on!

So if you lived in Hawaii, your kid was the star QB for Alabama and you wanted to come to all his games, if you had the means to either:
A. Do a temp move to Tuscaloosa (maybe renting an apt or house).
B. Fly to every home game and away game from Hawaii to Tuscaloosa (or away game location), round trip 4-6 legs/30+hours on planes and in airports.
Signs of brain damage would have been not doing the temp move to Tuscaloosa (esp if you were flying in coach every week).

I know a guy who has three boys two of which played college football. When we met they lived in Huntington Beach, CA. The oldest played for Tennessee, my friend packed his family up and moved to Knoxville. The youngest then got recruited and played for UNLV, my friend then packed up everything and moved to Vegas. I've since lost touch, but apparently this is not as uncommon as I would have thought.

I've also heard this called "lawnmower parenting". I think it's disgusting and can be extremely destructive, particularly for kids who are NOT superstars. I've seen that happen with some girls on my daughter's high school soccer team, and it was NOT pretty.
