scheduling is very difficult when you have a team sitting out every week/weekend from Oct on as conference schedules are in full swing. That's why almost all fb conferences seek an even number.

for other sports, not as big a deal. you can make it work when you have the option to play 7 different days in a week.

I dunno. I get your point and it is a good one. But, I'd stop short of saying "cannot". It certainly can be done and has been done. When the ACC added Florida State in the early 90's, the conference did just fine with 9 members for a decade (mostly dominated in FB by the Noles).

A case can be made that the AAC should just take its time and see how it goes with 11. They can always add later on if they feel the need. With division-less rules potentially on the horizon as a requirement for a conference FB championship game, the ability to play a legit round-robin 20-game MBB schedule (P5's are moving to 20 game conference schedules already), even a round-robin 10-game conference FB schedule is doable.

I think the Big 12-2 already has the best model with 10 programs for scheduling purposes. It would be refreshing to see conferences wanting to apply some common sense and actually contract instead of building these mega conferences like the WAC did years ago to monumental failure. 11 cuts of the conference kitty instead of 12 is a positive too. If the AAC takes its time and doesn't overreact, they could come out of this smelling like a rose. And again, if they choose to replace UConn to get to 12, they'll have plenty of good athletic programs to choose from.

Having said all that, they'll probably add some school 15 minutes after UConn makes it official later this week. 04-cheers

edit note: going to a 10-game AAC round-robin schedule would be near impossible for Navy I realize...they will demand to have the flexibility to play the USMA, USAFA and Notre Dame.

nah, totally different times back then.

many more conferences with fewer members back then, so all schools had more open dates/weekends with which to fill up schedules. and there were more independents to help fill that schedule.

not so now. conferences are bigger meaning they are playing more conference games which uses up more of the schedule and narrows your possibilities in any given week to fill that schedule.

it's difficult and conferences want to avoid it if they can. And the AAC cleary can because they will have a dozen candidates they can call upon.

RE: OT: Connecticut moving to Big East for all sports except football
I know that UConn hoops was not UConn hoops the last few years but the AAC just lost some still desirable programming content for ESPN. Word is that UConn not being able to televise some of their other sports (ie women’s basketball on other outlets) was something that UConn wasn’t fond of with the new rights deal. I believe the AAC has to do something or Espn could use this as an opportunity to reduce the rights deal. Imo if the game(football and basketball) doesn’t include Houston, UCF, Memphis or Cincy it’s not real appealing for Espn and will be televised on espn3 or Espn+. UConn was a school with some gravitas to help fill slots in terms of content. No one is tuning in to watch Ecu play Tulane.

Maybe so. Like I said, I think your point is a good one. It helped the ACC that Clemson, GT and FSU all had end of the season rivalry weekend games right after Turkey Day against non-conference state rivals. With the open dates during the season, it can be done with an odd number of teams.

I do think the AAC will replace UConn. Perhaps quickly. I think they'd be smart to take their time and be very strategical about who they pursue and who pursues them. When Maryland bailed on the ACC, it took the membership about 3 seconds to quickly add Louisville because it was pretty much a no-brainer. I'm not sure there is a clear-cut obvious choice for the AAC to replace UConn.

The AAC should replace UConn with the University of Toronto. Lock up that entire Great White North TV market.

The AAC will dominate Canadian recruiting. Think big, be REALLY big in this case.

UofT has won the Gray Cup 3 times for crying out loud (not joking).

Meet the Varsity Blues... https://varsityblues.ca/index.aspx?path=football

04-cheers

(truthfully, they should go after UNLV for what should be obvious reasons)

I want JMU in a conference with UNLV, Nevada-Reno, Hawaii, Utah State (for the snow skiing), Tulane, and Pepperdine. We should play an all-away conference schedule. No home games. Maybe throw in Army and Air Force in case we want to invade any other conferences. 03-thumbsup

From the You Don't Say Department... https://www.cbssports.com/college-basket...uncertain/

...Big East Presidents approve addition of UConn to get to 11 members (and an upcoming 20 game round-robin MBB schedule). FOX Sports has to be tickled about this development. Adds some nice inventory to their MBB TV package.

UConn to the Big East in all sports but football is official. The Navy AD had this quote today that makes you go hmmm...

Chris Vannini
@ChrisVannini

Whether or not the AAC replaces UConn also ties into the TV deal.

Navy AD Gladchuk: "It means there’s one less distribution to make. It means we get a little more of the revenue sharing. Anyone that comes in has got to be a plus rather than a fiscal detriment.”

I interpret that as unless you will somehow add to our TV revenue potential moving forward, we're content to stay with our current membership and add no one.

Given sufficient time, I anticipate moving the UCONN board to CAAbbs. I also anticipate JMU waxing UCONN even if they have more schollie players and players from a "higher level".

Honestly, I think their admin will let their program end before eating their pride and dropping to FCS and the CAA. With that being said, Idaho just joined the Big Sky this year and went 4-7 overall, 3-5 in the Big Sky.

No one that follows FCS was surprised they weren't going to be able to just walk into the Big Sky and immediately dominate. It will take time and recruiting to compete.

Beat the rush and go ahead and add them. Along with WVU, UConn has one of the most butthurt fanboy message board bases there is. Though, we are trying our best apparently to challenge them here. 01-lauramac2

We should all fit in well with one another. Whining, moaning, crying, just misery in general. 04-cheers

@FletcherPage

Initial conversations indicate the AAC is unlikely to replace UConn and will move forward with 11 football-member schools, source says.

Welp, time to close the thread down. Nothing to see here. Best case scenario if nothing ended up benefiting JMU to be honest.

Translation- they've been turned down by the usual suspects (BYU, Army, etc).

They may need to percolate a little before getting desperate, but they are going to add a 12th football team. Navy could slot to the East and they could add a team from the west. Wonder how many schools are calling them right now.

I hope one of the schools is called JMU. I think the AAC not adding a program now is better for JMU than an add now unless that add is JMU which is a looooong shot.

Please elaborate.

An estimated metro area consisting of 134k population.

Tuscaloosa, AL has about 100K population and a rural location geographically.
Auburn, AL about 65K.....rural area
Eugene, OR about 170K but rural for miles and miles all around

Longer established sports programs with storied histories but proof that long term lower populations and rural locations aren't always a deterrent to building high level sports teams and fan support.

I believe Navy specifically asked to be slotted in the West Division as part of their deal. The stated reason was for recruiting Texas. But I'm guessing they felt more in common with Tulane, SMU and Tulsa than behemoths UCF and USF as well.

Lou Rowe has a lot of pressure next year, some deserved, some all conference related. Bourne too, what do we do if we get better but still suck? If we suck, a clear upgrade expectation is there...

All of this means nothing to those who have the power to make decisions. They want to see "markets" and "potential fans". Harrisonburg has neither.

Ever since the Big 12 successful petitioned the NCAA to have a football conference championship game with less than 12 conference members they set a precedent for other conferences.

The AAC can still host a football championship game with only 11 members.

right, but i think the other stipulation was that if less than 12 you had to have a round robin schedule. that's how the Big12 gets to do it. They play everyone (9 conference games).

is the AAC going to play 10 conference games? That seems unlikely.

which is why i continue to believe they'll add a 12th school before UConn leaves (2020)

they can say what they want now because they don't have to add now. they have a year and half before they need a 12th
