UCONN’s replacement has to be outside the box. aka different
(06-23-2019 12:47 AM)AlonsoWDC Wrote:  ???

How the hell is this one move, should UConn leave, something that could be the 'end' of the American?

UConn brings NOTHING to football.

In their six seasons in the AAC, they were an NCAA Tournament team twice, and not since 2016.

We are a three-four bid league with or without them.

Quit being so dramatic.

My thoughts exactly. This doesn’t hurt us at all. It could actually help us since their football was a joke.

Different and really outside the box would be an effort to get BOTH Air Force and Army.

Incorporate the commander in chief trophy within the conference. Would Army and Navy ever be competitive in basketball is the question

Just commenting about true outside the box thinking

And the AAC is in no danger. We have the best G5 TV contract by far. It's already been reported that UConn leaving doesn't affect the contract.

If those are the teams, AAC should absolutely stay at 11. And Houston and Cincy and UCF will bolt for a P5 if offered in 5 or so years, nothing we can do about that.

The report was the contract would not be negated (dissolved) but there is wording to allow renegotiation with the loss of a team. So the contract COULD be affected.

And you can bet losing our biggest Tv market will affect it. UConn May end up making more money than any AAC school. Like I said, this is a smart move for UCONN.

Our biggest tv market? You are out of your frigging mind.

People have lost their minds. We're talking about replacing a school that has 4 National championships in basketball with schools like Georgia fricking State, Liberty, and Old Dominion as the headliners. The only box is the empty one inside their heads.

I would rather see the opposite happen. Take this as a chance to scale the conference back and get rid of the deadweight.

For football, reduce it to 9 teams:

Memphis
Houston
UCF
USF
Cincinnati
Tulane
SMU
Temple
Navy

For basketball, keep these 9 teams and I guess try to add some competent basketball teams to get to 12.

We don't need UCONN to help our basketball program. We need a stronger conference to help our football team. UCONN was a complete negative in that respect. Good riddance. If we add even a decent football program this is great news.

You are all missing the big picture. Yes football drives the ship. But more than that, TV does. And we are losing our largest tv market. Replace them with Georgia State in all sports.

Army or UAB. I just don't believe any of the MW schools leave. BYU still believes it beneath them. Who else is left? I like out of the box unless its just a useless choice.

While the AAC needs to be smart about the next invite, it doesn't have to be quick.

who says we really need that market?
Do we have any data that suggests that New York, or the New England states are interested in AAC basketball or football?
You saw how much support UConn(ed) had for football...no one in the AAC moves the needle for them.
Now if it were traditional Big East Rivals..Georgetown, Villanova...etc...I'd bet the games would be better attended.
Get a more localized rival....be it in Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, UAB, or USM.

But...IIRC, the rule says you have to play a round robin schedule to have a CCG with less than 12. With 11 teams, we aren't about to play a 10-game conference schedule.

I would prefer we add nobody, b/c I seriously doubt we could get Boise or BYU (even football only), and those are the only two who move the needle, so to speak.

But I also doubt we will drop our CCG in football, so I'm thinking we're stuck with adding an all sports school that none of us will be thrilled about.

EDIT: I looked it up:

The amendment, offered by the Big Ten late last week, allows conferences with fewer than 12 members to hold championship games in football, as long as they meet one of two additional conditions: Conferences that want to play championship games must either play their championship game between division winners after round-robin competition in each division or between the top two teams in the conference standings following full round-robin, regular-season competition between all members of the conference.

UMass isn't ready yet to make that kind of jump.
Maybe they will be in time...but this is one of those instances where it would be disastrous for them to jump in now.

UConn football TV ratings are and have been dismal for years even given the sheer size of that market. It is almost non existent. NE never a great CFB market anyway.
