They are the number 3 college team in Atlanta (UGa, yes I know they’re not in Atlanta, but they’re #1, GT, then GSU.

GSU has the opportunity to go to number 1 in Atlanta. GA is not in Atlanta, and GT is a private school whose alumni go away. GSU is a state university with a large student body, a rapidly growing alumni base and much upside potential. That said I still prefer the school located in the capital of french Louisiana. After the UL Cajuns I like Airforce, Colorado State, GSU and Arky State/Southern Ms/lUAB.

Ga Tech is not now, nor ever has been a private University. It is a State supported university.

GT is the flagship academic School in the Georgia Board of Regents system. They have very prominent business leaders in Atlanta and a very large alumni base within driving distance of campus (which is why ESPN has them on so many Thursday night games). GSU will not supplant them in the Atlanta market. GT may have been bigger in the Atlanta market than UGa in the 50’s and 60’s, but there is no one, not the Falcons, not the Braves, certainly not GSU, who can beat out UGa football as top dog in Atlanta (maybe only the 1995 Braves).

GT current undergraduate student body is more representative of an elite private school, than a flagship public. A lot of the problem, is how successful they have been. It's much easier to get accepted into the graduate program at GT than the undergraduate program.

GSU is just a massive school, and it's student body is much more reflective of the population of Atlanta. If you are an average Atlanta kid, it's a well traveled route to go to GSU or Kennesaw State then transfer into GT, or enter GT's graduate program.

UGA is just has the suburban Walmart fanbase. Not sure why Urban Atlanta would want to support them.

GT is a very distant 2nd to UGA in GA & Atlanta. It had been so long since GT was annually in the conversation of FB relevance that it isn't anymore. GA ST FB has a very small following for several reasons - the FB program is relatively new (no long term tradition or support), GA St had no history of FB success at any level & perception of the GA St FB program within the state causes virtually no high level recruits (3 star & above) to consider them. UGA dominates the state in college FB & high school FB in GA is huge leaving very little room for another GA- based program.

GA St has potential because they are in a state with lots of high level recruits, the size of the market, facilities & size of the school. But they desperately need to have some consistent success (several years) where they are to develop a following before being considered for the AAC.

I’m glad to know that there’s someone else who shares my fandom of these 2 teams.
