I personally think the agreement is reflective of a jump to a new conference. For the agreement to nearly quadruple is amazing.

Someone educate me on how UAB's Olympic sports would blend into the AAC. Does UAB have enough of them to satisfy the AAC?

Well, we had whatever teams those in the AAC had when they were in CUSA.

I think the only sport we don’t offer scholarships for is men’s track. No aquatic sports at all. Full compliment of other sports

More than that, we have vastly improved facilities for those compared to when the conference split. Brand new soccer stadium, good enough that the local pro team uses it for it's home field. Brand new track and field. New softball field. Baseball field is old and not very good, but we play a bit less than half of our home games at the local AA field. New fieldhouse on the way. Brand new sand volleyball.

RE: UCONN back to the Big East
If the AAC can't pull off BYU or Army as football only (doubt that happens), they may stand pat at 11 for a couple years to see how the top all sports contenders fare. If they take that approach the next year or two would essentially be like an audition. Time to keep investing in facilities and it's important that football show last year wasn't a fluke while basketball gets some spark back.

RE: UCONN back to the Big East
Does anyone know if UAB can come up with an athletic budget that would be comparable to an average AAC school?

Dirt will be moving on a state of the art 45K seat stadium within the next month, due to be open for UAB's 2021 season opener.

We just built a $21 million football op center. Huge improvement to Olympic sport infrastructure is current and ongoing.

This is not the UAB you remember.

I would think increased fan interest from playing more familiar/better schools & increased visibility from a better TV contract would lead to more ticket sales & donations. Then add in the AAC's far superior TV distribution and we're on our way.

You won't find an existing team that competes with their budget but it is all about potential.

Put UAB in there & we would adjust to it without issues.

Here's a good rundown of UAB campus construction projects.

That wasn’t even a tepid endorsement. That was “this needs to happen”. It’s a sign of the apocalypse

Paul has definitely been in our corner for the last few years

Yeah, we'll be ok there, I think. If you look at records it will be kind of deceptive. UAB Pres. Watts put a hard cap on university contribution to athletics. That said, we have (for the first time, since the shut down) the UAB Football Foundation to supplement those funds. We raised better than forty million for #TheReturn. That $22m football facility was paid for up front, not using bonds. We also just got a $17m bump from IMG.

Add increased excitement at playing better teams including old C-USA rivalries, which should sell tickets to both football and basketball. Once the new stadium opens in a couple of seasons, you can add increased attendance due to getting out of a dump in the projects and into a gem of a brand new and purposely designed to be fan friendly stadium downtown.

If we get in, we got this. Much of it happens anyhow, but it is easier with increased money and TV coverage from the AAC as well as better visiting teams.

RE: UCONN back to the Big East
AAC went through some of this not too long ago. They've had relatively recent talks with some of the players, like Army, Boise, and BYU. They kind of know the lay of the land already on them. There is still the possibility that they leave the slot open, remain at eleven, and split the extra share's money.

They're not going to rush. I would not expect to hear anything from the AAC for months anyhow.

That's ok. It gives us something to strive for. We, all of us, need to dig into our pockets and buy season tickets. That kind of support will be looked at, so if you are currently a walk-up kind of fan, make that move.

We also need to accentuate the positive. We all know the negatives from over the years, and some of our fans still have PTSD and can be very negative about the BoT, etc. We've changed that narrative, and bringing that sort of thing back up when it has been largely put behind us is very counterproductive. Pump some sunshine, guys, don't let the bad old days creep back out of the grave and poison our chances. I know those downsides as well as anyone, and yeah, I have my reservations still - but overall the BoT has been pretty supportive over the last couple of years. It gains us nothing but ill will to start slamming them publicly when they've been doing right by us.

I don't believe that the AAC is surprised by this. I believe they have been prepared to replace UConn for quite a while.
