Big night tonight to kick off the next season. NHL Draft that will be kinda wild after the first two picks. As expected, Devils take Hughes and Rangers get Kakko. Now things get interesting...

Gonna be another great season!

RE: 2019-20 NHL Hockey Thread
Heckuva draft in Vancouver last night.

The New Jersey Devils selected Jack Hughes, an 18-year-old center from Orlando, Florida, with the first overall pick in the NHL draft Friday night. Hughes is a product of the USA Hockey National Development Program. Hughes holds that program's records for career points (154) and goals (228). He represented the U.S. four times in international competition, most recently at the IIHF world championships. Hughes is the eighth American selected first overall and joins his brother Quinn Hughes, a rookie defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks, in the NHL.

The NY Rangers followed the Hughes selection by drafting Kakko, a 6-2 winger who helped Finland complete an international gold-medal sweep at the world championships, world juniors and under-18 tournament. He had 22 goals in the Finnish Elite League, the most by a draft-eligible player.

The Chicago Blackhawks picking third, went with size in selecting 6-4 center Kirby Dach out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

The Detroit Red Wings' selection of German defenseman Moritz Seider at No. 6 was the surprise of the draft. The 18-year-old figured he would land somewhere between Nos. 15 and 20.

The Florida Panthers took goalie Spencer Knight, only the third goalie selected in the first round over the past seven years.

The Vegas Golden Knights selected center Peyton Krebs from Kootenay in the WHL with the17th overall pick to add to their stockpile of centers in the minors. Hope they sign William Karlsson to an extension as a restricted free agent as expected this offseason.

and of course, we'll have to put up with a second season of "Gritty". Actually, I'm kind of getting used to him now...

I like where the Hurricanes are sitting right now. Biggest question will be goalie coach and goalie retention.

Where do you see things going for them next season, PT?

Canes have to solve:

Goalies on regular season roster.

Keep Faulk?

Does Justin Williams stay?

I believe there are some free agent questions too--who to keep and for how much from last year's roster

Aho contract.

I think they will make good decisions on these so I feel confident that the addiction to winning takes over and Rod becomes an even better coach and we are a playoff team as a #3 seed or top wild card slot. I still think it's one more season till we are seriously contending for division winner.

Blues don't really lose anyone big, and we only have two or so names to resign next offseason. We could look to make a splash if we really wanted to, we're on a roll after hosing Buffalo with the O'Reilly trade last year after all.

Blues were a feel-good story this season. next year, they'll be more just another good team other teams will try to knock off.

In other news:
Center William Karlsson is expected to sign an eight-year, $47.2 million contract to remain with the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. The former Blue Jackets' third line grinder has shown over two seasons with the Knights that he is a top-line, two-way forward on a good team. Vegas will have to do some clever maneuvering to deal with this year's less-than-anticipated salary cap.

Free agency will be really entertaining when AZ offers Marner 4x14 and the city of Toronto implodes

Man, the GKnights have a real mess trying to get under the cap. Plenty of good players, but not enough allowed to pay them all. Some interesting trades will be upcoming. Hope they don't get burned too badly.
