The Great Tubby Smith coached Dedric one year. and he had another year of the legend Bill Self. Maybe they were good college players who were never gong to be NBA regulars?
Except for Nichols.... he never showed any consistency in college, KJ never rated like the others
So where does Will the Thrill presently work? Just asking for a friend.
Denver Nuggets, last I heard.

Actually top of 2cd round but Will had to prove he could shoot the 3 and he worked tirelessly on that and has became a decent 3pt shooter which is a big plus given how well he does everything else. Draft did him no favors in going to Portland who kept bringing guys in at his spots and had Dame And McCollum taking up so many perimeter minutes.
Going to Denver did him a great turn and he took advantage of it. 2 years ago he, DRose and Tyreke all averaged at least 17 ppg and Reke turned it into a very good contract but the drug suspension likely ended his NBA career. Rose should get a decent FA offer this year after a very good season last year.

Thomas had no chance. He wasn’t even close to being good enough. Couldn’t shoot. Couldn’t dribble. Couldn’t create for himself or others. Not surprised at all that he’s not in the NBA. I couldn’t stand josh, but I don’t see what josh could have done to help a player that doesn’t have the skills necessary to play pro ball. Heck, Baskerville Holmes, Marvin Alexander, and Sylvester Gray were way better than Thomas.

John Calipari would've gotten a Final Four out of that bunch.
That was a boatload of talent pissed away under Pastner.
Player development would've been night and day.
He would've got Joe, Austin and Dedric drafted....maybe Adonis.

Will Barton, OTOH, worked his a$$ off every where he went and made it. Sorry I mentioned Josh, but he recruited them all and his recruiting classes were highly rated and none of us would have bet that, of the OP players mentioned, Black would be the only one to play a minute in the NBA.
Just comparing those guys to our current #1 class. I've been saying it all along, you just don't know how good they are until they hit the court. It would be really hard for Wiseman not to live up to expectations, but the rest, we'll know in November.
This group looks to have a higher basketball IQ than Pastners’ 2010 class. Neither Will nor Joe had very high basketball IQs as freshmen—both suffered poor high school coaching (and college coaching). Tarik had the highest basketball IQ that year; so much so that GP picked Tarik as preseason CUSA player of the year. I would like to have seen what Joe would’ve been if Coach Tippett had stayed at White Station.

I expect our current staff to be better at player development than Calipari.

Memphis players in general tend to be a little overrated in regards to their NBA potential. It may hurt for some of you to hear that. But the proof is in the results.

Y’all put WAY too much stock into what a coach does to develop a player in college.

Unfair comparison-Calipari bailed on us-Pastner was a convenient pick for our AD. But the scorn for JP doesn't help anyone-IMO

I agree, JJ was horribly mismanaged which significantly stunted his development, especially early on.
Worst coaching ever.
Josh took a supercharged Supra and turned it into a Volkswagen Beetle.

Actually he was handed the keys to a car he couldn’t drive. And despite the same advice from every coach and respected media person he reached out to, he did not take their advice. Get an X/O and enforcer coach.

I don't know if some of those players would have lasted with cal. JJ took a break under JP. JJ seemed to be too small for the NBA.

Not sure what the point is. Being a good college player doesn't always translate into a NBA career. Will Barton was one you missed. He didn't get drafted high but has had a good NBA career. The others had various flaws that kept them out of the NBA.
Barton probably should have been a first rounder and is probably the guy whose career was most clearly hurt by Pastner's failure to capitalize on the talent he was able to attract.

He was supposed to be the one surefire first round pick in that class, and a possible lottery pick. As it was he was the best player on a team that couldn't really beat high level competition so he never really got to prove himself when he was here. That cost him a lot in the draft.
The fact that he's been such a good NBA player is probably the biggest indictment of Pastner. We had that guy for three two years and kept losing to sub 150 teams.
