Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
I think Cronin was more like tubs than many may want to admit.

Consider the similarities:
Both men:
Solid people who ran clean programs
Good grad rates
No off court/off field issues
Refused to recruit or look at local kids
Lame excuses were the norm
Stubborn to a fault
Couldn't win in the post season

Sure there were differences but I see a lot of similarities.

RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
I'm afraid this comparison is very unfair to Mick. He took a program in shambles and brought it to a respectable level of competitiveness. Tubs did exactly the opposite.

No offense but this is also 05-deadhorse 05-deadhorse

They are both gone, I'm moving on.

Are you telling me that you can draw similarities between two big time college coaches?? I can't believe you are able to do that!!! Holy **** you are a genius.

I was ready for Mick to be gone. But this pisses me off Bearcats#1. Tuberville nearly nuked our fb program.

Agreed. Not really similar at all when it comes to what they accomplished.

If you want a comparison of coaches Mick and Marvin are much more similar. Both took over a crap situation, stabilized, made the teams competitive, but ultimately couldn't get over the hump. Both were stubborn, fell behind the times, refused to change, and eventually were moved on from.

This first measure should be - Did you leave the program better than what you inherited? Night and day difference. Comparison fails.

Definitely different. Mick never turned the hoops progran into the utter embarrassment Tubervilles program was. Mick had competitive teans every year. My point in the other thread, was that by TT sucking so bad it allowed us to very easily move on from him relatively quickly (but still not quick enough). Mick had a nice, but not great team every year.

Hell no. Total opposites. Now Marvin compared to Mick is uncannily similar.

RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
Mick built a program and maxed out here. Tubs was maxed out prior to arriving and depleted a program. No comparison. Evidenced by where they both are today. I wish Mick the best in the rest of his coaching career. I wish Tubs the best in retirement. I am now done talking about both.

One more thing...it we had kept them both, I believe they would have both maintained the same trajectory they were heading in. There is no similarity there either.

Now I'm done talking about both.

RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
It's easier to compare athletic directors who hired those two coaches. Mike Thomas was a lazy ass who I don't believe ever talked to anyone but Mick. He saw him as an easy hire and his job was done. Whit Babcock saw a soft landing retirement spot for his old buddy Tubs and that made his job easy.

They're actually related. Tuberville and Cronin were just pseudonyms.

Their real names are Andy and Opey Taylor.

Well, we had to pay Tubbs to leave and I believe we were paid to let Cronin leave.

No comparison.

RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
There are some similarities, but one massive difference: Mick was insanely focused on winning, Tubs didn't really care. The problem for Mick was his personality... he let that need to win take over his mind to the point that he kept an iron grip over every aspect of the game.

That was a major issue, due to Mick's other traits: stubbornness, arrogance, and total offensive ineptitude. He refused to change or listen to any outside input, and our offense and recruiting suffered because of it. We had reached our ceiling, and that ceiling was too low for most fans.

RE: Cronin vs Tubs: Same or Different?
I'm going to say that there were more "similarities" between Mick Cronin and Rick Minter than there were between Cronin and Tuberville...

Both Cronin and Minter had "Success" at UC.
Both Cronin and Minter had "taken the program as far as he could go..." and it became obvious that they could not take "the next step" or move "to the next level."
Both Cronin and Minter were stubborn and demanded their will be imposed on their players...whether the players were "happy" about it or not. (Remember the knee braces?)
Both Cronin and Minter failed to recruit "local talent"...Minter because he said he didn't want to "waste his time trying to recruit kids who would never come to UC" and Mick, well, for whatever reasons.

I think Minter is one of the under-rated coaches at UC...I look pretty favorably on the job he did overall. (And yes, I have thoroughly "let go" of his tenure and "moved on.") My hope is that, as time moves on, I will have a similar reaction to Mick's time. Quickly my frustration at Mick is fading and I have no real ill feelings about Mick jumping ship. I think he and Minter both hit their ceilings here...which is not a terrible thing. Better to "hit your ceiling" than to have "unrealized potential."

C'est la vie.

Agree with you Jerry on the comparison with Minter. Mick built the program up, brought it back to respectability, and then peaked. He Who Shall Not Be Named Forevermore peaked in Year One off of the prior regime's players and descended the program to a joke by Year Four. He was a con-man who got paid a lot of money to destroy our reputation, winning acumen, and Ohio recruiting connections. There is NO comparison between the two IMO.

Tubs sucked with the Bearcats, but at least he won a meaningful game at some point in his life.
