He never truly worked to develop a secondary pitch whether coaches told him to or not. I got bashed for that pretty badly when I mentioned it here during his rough sophomore season at UNCW, but it was an issue that indeed followed him to the next level.

If you don't have more than 1, 2 pitches at the next level, you are at best a pen arm.

Absolutely, but hitters are "safer bets" than pitchers. If you can hit in college you can likely hit in the minors. And if you can hit well in the minors it can translate to the Pros. Add to that his speed and glove and it makes him a safer bet than most to make it.

In addition, the Rays are a great organization (at least when it comes to developing young players) and will take the time to invest in him properly. It won't be like a Mets-Brad Holt situation.

Bottom line is he has to hit the ball at an elite level. All of these guys in todays game are athletic and with the way the game is played today speed is not as valued as it once was. Defensive speed is a plus but not a must if you can hit ball out. Had a scout tell me not long ago that unless you are looking at a leadoff type hitter speed is not a factor but just an asset.

Agree Mullet. Kyle Schwarber (Cubs) comes to mind. Outfielder who is a liability in the field, to put it nicely but when he's on at the plate absolutely mashes balls.

He looks like a lead off guy but it all depends on the roster he plays with. He is with a organization that has some young players in front of him and that could be a problem. The good news is he has tools and drive to go with it.

At least he might have several pathways to a spot with SS/CF as options.

Plus the Rays won't hesitate to trade a veteran player when necessary, thus opening a spot for a prospect. CF Kevin Kiermaier, for instance, is 29 and has $36M left on his current deal (thru 2023).

That is a good point and I saw Jones plenty at UNCW, he can handle CF at any level you would hope with his speed and arm strength. If he has holes in his swing they will exploit that as he climbs the ladder,I am no expert but he didn't really show any here!

Greg still hasn't seen the field since Jul 31 due to an undisclosed injury. Hudson Valley is currently taking on the Tri-City ValleyCats in a doubleheader, but Jones isn't in the lineup for the Renegades for Game 1.

RE: Greg Jones career tracker thread
Greg returned to the lineup last night after missing nearly 2 weeks. He started at SS for Hudson Valley and went 2-3 with a run scored against the Lowell Spinners. He did, however, make an error in the field. Good to see him healthy again.

Jones is now batting .349 with a .453 OBP and .500 SLG on the season.

These Draft picks are off to fast starts
By Jonathan Mayo @JonathanMayo
August 12, 2019

The first summer of pro ball for a recently drafted player is mostly an opportunity for him to get his feet wet and get a sense of what the transition is going to be like. It’s also a chance for he and his organization to get to know each other a bit better. Typically, the draftee just goes out and plays, with coaches and player development staff not tweaking too much, so all parties can get a first sense of what works and what doesn’t at this level.

This, in turn, gives players a strong foundation to build from as they approach their first full year. Statistical performance, because of the sample size, doesn’t carry too much weight on the positive or negative side of the ledger. But a strong pro debut can really put some wind at the sails of these new prospects, with success out of the gate often leading to more success down the road.

Last year’s draftees featured as being off to hot starts can be found all over our rankings this year. A total of 10 are on the Top 100, while eight more are currently on a team Top 30 and many have used last year’s debut to jump up their respective organizational ladders.

Who might be next? Here are 20 members of the Draft class of 2019 off to very good starts (all stats are as of Monday).

First-round hitters

4. Greg Jones, SS, Rays

The toolsy product out of UNC Wilmington has hit extremely well in the New York-Penn League and his .349 average would be third in the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify. His .423 on-base percentage would be second and he’d be in the top three in slugging (.500) as well.

RE: Greg Jones career tracker thread
Greg was named to the New York-Penn League All-Star game. That game will take place tonight at 7 PM in Staten Island. Congrats Greg!

He'll be on the "Red Team", which faces the "Blue Team". The rosters can be found here: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/...r-rosters/

Quote:The rosters are rounded out by two first-round shortstops from this year's draft—Williamsport's Bryson Stott and Hudson Valley's Greg Jones.

Jones, a speedster from North Carolina-Wilmington, has already racked up three triples and 13 stolen bases in 35 games with the Renegades.

Greg Jones' "Red Team" lost 7-4 to the "Blue Team" in the New York-Penn All-Star game last time. But Greg had a nice night at the plate, going 2-3 with an RBI.

There will be no All-Star break rest, however, as Hudson Valley's season continues tonight at 7 @ Tri-City. Greg enters tonight's contest hitting .327 on the season, with 1 HR, 19 RBI, 14 SB, 28 R, .395 OBP and .467 SLG. In the field he has a .941 Fielding % and has turned 6 Double Plays.

Is it too late in the season for him to get bumped up? I'd think someone tearing it up would be getting moved along.

I was hoping to see a midseason promotion happen as well. But between his early season injury AND midseason injury, and with the end of Hudson Valley's regular season approaching on September 2nd, I guess they figured they'd let him complete the season there then start fresh with a promotion next season.

Remember, he's only played in 38 games with 150 AB's to this point.

Yup. I figured the injuries played a part. Even in only 150 ABs though it's clear he doesn't belong at that level

Good to see him back on the field. He will have to stay healthy to move up quickly but I don't see him going back to the NYPL. Most likely move up to A ball Bowling Green, maybe Charlotte Stone Crabs.

Greg finished up the regular season slashing .335/.413/.461 with 1 HR, 24 RBI, 19 SB and 39 R.

The HV Renegades are taking on the Brooklyn Cyclones in Game 2 of the NYPL Semi-Finals after winning Game 1 of the Best of 3 last night, 5-4. Greg went 2-3 with 2 RBI, a BB and Run in last night's victory.

Solid season for Greg. Looking forward to where he gets promoted next season.

Greg Jones is killing it for the A+ Bowling Green Hot Rods so far this year. He hit his 6th HR tonight and also has 10 Stolen Bases just 70 ABs into the season. He's slashing .286/.407/.586.

I imagine it won't be very long before he's getting a promotion.
