N.C. Senate OKs beer, wine sales at university stadium sports events
Continuing the trend seen in other states, now North Carolina wants to join the list of states allowing alcohol sales during college events. Please note that its not final, yet. The governor has yet to indicate whether he'd support it.

Quote:Sen. Chuck Edwards, R-Buncombe, said it is likely that East Carolina University, N.C. State and UNC Chapel Hill would be early adopters of new or expanded sales. Appalachian State University, N.C. A&T State University and UNC Greensboro have had athletics department personnel at previous committee meetings on HB389.

Of the 15 state universities, only UNC Pembroke has not indicated support for the bill, according to bill sponsors.

“It appears likely that most of the schools would at least consider offering alcohol sales,” said Mitch Kokai, a senior policy analyst with the John Locke Foundation, a conservative-leaning research group. “Those campuses will weigh the benefits of the additional revenue against any costs linked to new enforcement measures against underage drinking.”

RE: N.C. Senate OKs beer, wine sales at university stadium sports events
Quote:Governor Roy Cooper has signed into law a bill allowing University of North Carolina system schools to decide whether to sell alcohol at their stadiums and athletic facilities.

House Bill 389 was introduced by NC House Majority Leader John Bell (R-Wayne) and NC Senate Majority Whip Rick Gunn (R-Alamance).

University officials said the law gives them greater control over game day drinking.

Those against the law fear it will open the door for binge-drinking.

Governor signed it today. This is good news and hopefully puts the pressure on the folks in my neck of the woods to do the same.

For this upcoming season. Charlotte's Board of Trustees has already passed a plan to sell beer this year at football, basketball, soccer, and baseball games.

Fans are not going to get drunk on $8-$10 beers in the stands. They are going to get drunk on the kegs and cases they brought with them.

Some schools already sell alcohol in private/sky boxes. I don't know how this got around the law but it did. Duke is private so is not retrained by these laws. They have sold alcohol for a while but restrict it to higher level boosters.

Happy to see this as an out of town Pirate who does not always have time to arrive in time to tailgate all day. If I am driving the 5 1/2 hours and have just enough time to get to the game maybe and hour before or closer it would be nice to have the option to buy a couple $8 beers. As a Pirate Club member I always have the option to walk the 50 yards out of the stadium to my parking spot, grab a beer out of my car and then go back into the game but it would be nice to sit back and relax with a cold beer and watch ECU Football and having that option at Baseball and Basketball games is a no brainer

Quote:NC State has formalized procedures and policies related to the addition of beer sales within public areas of Carter-Finley Stadium in advance of the Wolfpack's season-opener on August 31.

The NC State University Board of Trustees approved the necessary revisions to the university's alcohol policies on July 10, allowing for the sale of beer in Athletic venues. From that point, multiple NC State departments began the process of collaboratively determining logistics for sales at Carter-Finley Stadium with the priority of providing a safe, positive experience for all attendees.

Quote:Raise a glass, Tar Heel fans. UNC-Chapel Hill will start selling alcohol at football games this fall.

Fans can buy beer and wine at 20 concession stands at Kenan Stadium starting with the Sept. 7 home opener against Miami.

The decision came after “much research, consideration and consultation with University leadership,” UNC Athletics Director Bubba Cunningham said in a letter to 2019 football ticketholders Monday.

UNC is still finalizing operational details prioritizing safety, control and training. No alcohol will be allowed in the student section and fans can only buy one alcoholic beverage per transaction. Concession stands will start selling beer and wine 90 minutes before kickoff and stop at the beginning of the third quarter.

Quote:The schools allowing alcohol sales at athletic events:

UNC Chapel Hill

N.C. State

East Carolina

Appalachian State

UNC Wilmington

N.C. A&T

Wake Forest

UNC Charlotte is doing a one-year trial.

UNC Greensboro allows alcohol sales at off-campus events but not on campus.

UNC Asheville, N.C. Central, Western Carolina, Winston-Salem State, Elizabeth City State and Fayetteville State are still deciding.

UNC Pembroke and Duke University are not allowing alcohol sales at sports venues.

Yes, tailgating is where fans get drunk.

As someone who can't have beer thanks to allergies, this is actually good to see. Also if it's stupidly hot out it's a pretty damn refreshing way to keep drinking.

My wife started drinking them almost exclusively last year, I agree, they’re very refreshing
