Fast Start Fuels Huskies Past Eastern Illinois

Quote:DEKALB, IL – Two goals in the opening 91 seconds of the contest helped lead the Northern Illinois University men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Eastern Illinois on Tuesday night (Oct. 8) at the NIU Soccer Complex. Sophomore Miguel Maynez Jr. (El Paso, Texas/New Mexico) scored a pair of goals while junior Alex Welch (Carmarthen, Wales/King's College Madrid) added a goal and an assist as the Huskies scored three in the opening quarter-hour to race past the Panthers.

NIU's five goals is the most scored by a Huskie team since November 4, 2010, when the Huskies defeated Milwaukee, 5-1.

"It is huge when you can beat (Eastern Illinois') resistance early," said NIU head coach Ryan Swan of the fast start. "We knew that they are a good defensive team, they have shutout a lot of teams this year. Getting those (goals) early, they have to change the way they play and that helps us, it is certainly a positive thing."

It took NIU just 33 seconds to open the scoring as Eastern Illinois had the kickoff to open the game and played the ball around in its own half until a turnover near the end line. Senior Jan Maertins (Rheinfelden, Germany/Marquette) pounced on the turnover and fed Maynez Jr. who was all alone inside the box and fired past Eastern Illinois goalkeeper Jonathan Burke to give the Huskies an early lead.

Less than a minute later the Huskies doubled their advantage as Maertins played a low cross from the left side into the box to sophomore Nick Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) who swept home a second goal through the legs of Burke as the Huskies led 2-0 inside two minutes.

The wild start continued as Eastern Illinois (4-6-1) cut the NIU lead in half in the third minute. After a foul on the Huskies about 35 yards from goal, Nate Francke clipped the free kick up toward the back post where Shady Omar powered a header back across goal and into the net to bring the Panthers back within a goal.

Just before the quarter-hour mark NIU restored its two-goal advantage as Maynez scored his second of the contest. The sophomore transfer from New Mexico looked up from about 25 yards and whistled a shot across goal and past Burke to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead in the 15th minute.

NIU (5-6-1) found the back of the net again with its fourth shot of the contest in the 21st minute as sophomore Anthony Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) gave the Huskies a three-goal lead. The ball was swung across the field from right-to-left where it found the feet of Welch, who played it on into the path of Anthony Markanich for a rocket into the upper corner from near the top of the box as the Huskies took a 4-1 lead, an advantage they would take into the intermission.

In the 57th minute, Welch added a fifth for the Huskies. With the ball in space outside the box, Welch hit a dipping shot that skipped off the turf just in front of goal and past Burke to close the scoring.

Burke finished the contest with three saves in goal for Eastern Illinois; redshirt freshman Martin Sanchez (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) made four saves between the sticks for NIU.

"It was important that we got the right response after the Saint Mary's game," said Swan. "I think the guys will be feeling pretty good again, but conference games are a different thing all together. The next five games are going to be really tough, SIUE is a good team."

NIU will begin Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon, October 12, when the Huskies welcome SIU Edwardsville to DeKalb. Kickoff against the Cougars is slated for 2 p.m.

Huskies Open League Play Saturday at Home Against SIU Edwardsville

Quote:DEKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University men's soccer team begins Mid-American Conference play on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 12) when the Huskies welcome SIU Edwardsville to the NIU Soccer Complex. Kickoff against the Cougars is slated for 2 p.m. and admission to all NIU soccer games is free of charge.

"Every game is important, but everything up to this point is preparing for conference play," said NIU head coach Ryan Swan. "Getting to start at home, against a good SIUE team, is a good challenge but I think the guys are ready and hopefully the last couple of games have prepared them for it."

NIU (5-6-1) enters the first conference match of the season on the heels of a 5-1 victory over Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (Oct. 8) in its final non-conference game of the season. Sophomore Miguel Maynez Jr. (El Paso, Texas/New Mexico) scored twice in the victory over the Panthers, sophomores Nick Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) and Anthony Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) as well as junior Alex Welch (Carmarthen, Wales/King's College Madrid) also found the back of the net against EIU.

Nick Markanich leads the Huskies in scoring with five goals and 11 points, senior Jan Maertins (Rheinfelden, Germany/Marquette), who recorded a pair of assists on Tuesday against Eastern Illinois, is second with three goals and three assists for nine total points.

The Cougars bring a 6-3-1 overall record into conference play and have won four consecutive matches, posting shutouts in all four including a 3-0 victory last time out against Valparaiso (Oct. 5). Jorge Gonzalez leads SIU Edwardsville, and the MAC, in scoring with seven goals and 16 points

Noah Heim and Lluis Martorell has split time in goal for the Cougars, Heim has played six matches with a 1.92 goals against average and a .740 save percentage while Martorell has not conceded a goal while starting the last four between the posts.

"Everybody in the MAC has a pretty similar record coming into conference, we are all within a game or two of each other, and everyone has their eye on these games," said Swan. "We know how important they are, and we know there is that little bit extra because there are so few of these conference games."

Saturday's match marks the second consecutive season that the Huskies and Cougars have met in the conference opener. SIUE won last year's meeting, 3-2 in double overtime, in Edwardsville. Welch and Nick Markanich tallied the goals for the Huskies.

Conference play continues next Friday, October 18, as the Huskies travel to West Virginia. Game time in Morgantown is set for 6 p.m.

Welch Helps Lead Huskies Past West Virginia

Quote:MORGANTOWN, WV – Junior Alex Welch (Carmarthen, Wales/King's College Madrid) scored two goals and recorded two assists as the Northern Illinois University men's soccer team claimed a 4-2 victory at West Virginia on Friday night (Oct. 18) at Dick Dlesk Stadium. The Mountaineers came back to tie the game twice but two goals in the final 20 minutes helped NIU claim its first ever victory in Morgantown.

"We are proud of the guys for battling in a crazy game and finding a way to win," said NIU head coach Ryan Swan. "On essentially all of our chances, the guys were doing the things we are asking of them, getting in the right positions, and then it is all about holding your composure. I was proud of the guys on all those goals, when they got in those situations they held their nerve."

West Virginia (6-6-1, 0-2-0 MAC) made the brighter start and NIU redshirt freshman goalkeeper Martin Sanchez (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) was tested just two minutes into the match as he tipped away a shot from Andres Muriel Albino for a corner.

The Mountaineers continued to see more of the ball in the opening 30 minutes before NIU (6-7-1, 1-1-0 MAC) opened the scoring.

Just past the half-hour mark, senior Ethan Pitre (Minneapolis, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) gave NIU the lead against the run of play. Welch flicked on a goal kick from inside the center circle and, after a misplay by a West Virginia defender, Pitre was in alone one-v-one with Mountaineer goalkeeper Steven Tekesky and the Huskie senior made no mistake, slotting home the game's opening goal in the 32nd minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

It took the Mountaineers less than a minute to answer as Rodrigo Robles Grajera evened the match at 1-1. A cross from Tony Pineda pinballed off Sanchez and a Huskie defender before falling right to the feet of Robles Grajera who tapped it in from close range to level the contest.

West Virginia had a chance to go in front in the 40th minute as a through ball split the NIU defense and found Robles Grajera, whose shot was saved by the foot of Sanchez. NIU immediately went back the other way as Welch found the run of senior Jan Maertins (Rheinfelden, Germany/Marquette) in behind the Mountaineer defense but the NIU senior forward's effort went wide.

Seven minutes after halftime, West Virginia hit the crossbar as a chance from Pau Jimenez Albelda bounced off the bar before Sanchez tipped it over for a corner.

From the West Virginia corner, NIU went back in front as sophomore Nick Markanich (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) finished off a perfect counterattack for the Huskies. NIU cleared the Mountaineer set piece and Welch picked up the ball in his own half, ghosted past a Mountaineer defender and fired a shot that was well saved by Tekesky down low with his left hand. The rebound fell right into the path of Markanich however and he finished into an open net to give NIU a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute.

The Huskies nearly doubled their advantage just a minute later as Markanich got on the end of a cross at the back post but couldn't direct his volley on target.

West Virginia equalized again in the 66th minute through Ryan Kellogg. Albert Andres-Llop sent a dangerous cross through the NIU box and Kellogg got the final touch with his head to beat Sanchez and level the match at 2-2.

NIU went in front for the third time in the 71st minute on a goal by Welch. Markanich whipped in a teasing cross near the top of the box and Tekesky came well off his line to punch, just getting a hand to it, but the rebound fell kindly toward Welch who fired past a scrambling Tekesky into the vacated goal to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

Welch put the game out of reach with his second goal of the night in the 89th minute. With West Virginia pushing for an equalizer, a Mountaineer turnover gave the ball to sophomore Louis Sala (West Bloomfield, Mich./Orchard Lake St. Mary's) who sprung Welch all alone on the counter into the West Virginia half and the junior midfielder converted his second of the night, beating Tekesky one-v-one to give the Huskies a 4-2 victory.

"Obviously, he was really good," Swan said of Welch, who played a part in all four Huskie goals. "We know his range of passing, and when he gets running at players he can open up defenses and he showed that tonight. We have always know it is there, so we are hoping he can continue that and get a little confidence from tonight."

Sanchez made six saves in the win for the Huskies, Tekesky made a pair of stops for the Mountaineers.

The Huskies will be back in action next Friday, October 25, when they host Western Michigan in the final home game of the regular season. Kickoff against the Broncos is set for 7pm.
