30 years from now many of our ideas will have passed with us.

The small details like this capture our attention and keep us happy in the moment. Finding things we don’t like is an energizing pastime. No need to look hard. Plus there’s plenty to go around.

I subscribe to the Daily M. It pops into my Inbox and the home vibe comes through.

Many good things are happening in Memphis. It is a very solid community replete with kindness and harmony.

True points. For any PhD candidates out there, here is a free idea for a dissertation. A study on how internet outrage/grievance culture affects the various hormones. My theory is that outrage/grievance has the same affects in many people as sex, which is why so many people seek it out repeatedly and always want more. There has to be mental, hell, possibly even physical organisms of some sort going on.

Here're a few thoughts from Thomas Sowell that may offer some insight for the benefit of those who favor the shenanigan-doers in regards to the Frayser incident:

People don't usually grow up when there are other people who make excuses for their immaturity.

Few skills are so well rewarded as the ability to convince parasites that they are victims.

The black family survived centuries of slavery and generations of Jim Crow, but it has disintegrated in the wake of the liberals' expansion of the welfare state.

The word 'racism' is like ketchup. It can be put on practically anything - and demanding evidence makes you a 'racist.'

Imagine a political system so radical as to promise to move more of the poorest 20% of the population into the richest 20% than remain in the poorest bracket within the decade? You don't need to imagine it. It's called the United States of America.

If you have always believed that everyone should play by the same rules and be judged by the same standards, that would have gotten you labeled a radical 60 years ago, a liberal 30 years ago and a racist today.

The poverty rate among black married couples has been in single digits ever since 1994. You would never learn that from most of the media. Similarly you look at those blacks that have gone on to college or finished college, the incarceration rate is some tiny fraction of what it is among those blacks who have dropped out of high school. So it’s not being black; it’s a way of life. Unfortunately, the way of life is being celebrated not only in rap music, but among the intelligentsia, is a way of life that leads to a lot of very big problems for most people.

We seem to be moving steadily in the direction of a society where no one is responsible for what he himself did, but we are all responsible for what somebody else did, either in the present or in the past.

Let me start off by saying.. I am no fan of the police. I feel there is a fundamental problem.. Anyone who actually wants to be a cop has the exact personality that should never be allowed to be a cop.

Saying that... this was absolutely the wrong incident to protest. This guy didn't get killed by the police, he commited suicide with the help of the police.

If they want to protest and riot etc., they should atleast pick an incident that reflects the issues, not some guy trying his very best to kill someone, running across statelines, ramming the police, and jumping out of the stolen vehicle with a weapon.

RE: just cancelled my Daily Memphian subscription
There is a reason why national groups are essentially leaving this one alone.

This is not black people protesting for equal rights or to stop killing innocent people just because they are black.

This is some crazy folks throwing rocks, bottles, a few stray shots here and there.

Formal protests are not those to be afraid of but these vigilante group protests are.

And it just so happens these vigilante groups feature such names as Bloods, Crips, and in this case, Gangster Disciples.

That's a lot of fire power.

Once they get actively involved it is going to be ugly.

Everybody keeps ignoring it and running East, eventually you going to reach the ocean and when you look behind you it's the Wild, Wild West.

What? I love Memphis and have been here all my life. I can only assume you are being facetious though. There are some good things happening, but Memphis has so many areas and so many people that are so far down it is hard to see a way out.
Take a drive, or a walk even, through neighborhoods like Mallory Heights, Parkway Village, Little Chicago, etc, etc, etc. It would be discouraging to anyone. Go to a high school football game in the city, or just watch the first 10 minutes of the local news and you will see the real truth of how the city is doing.

A few weeks ago Geoff said something on the radio which I thought was quite telling and kind of an example of how I feel about the staff at the Daily Memphian. He and Gary were talking about the song Walking in Memphis. Geoff said, half joking, he didn’t even know how to get from Union Avenue to Graceland. I like Geoff, and while he was mostly kidding, I thought it was kind of interesting. I think he and a lot of people like him at the Daily Memphian are not really in touch with the average Memphian living in the inner city. I definitely don’t think they would have an understanding of how these neighborhoods have transitioned to their current state over the past several decades. Geoff is way more often at Lausanne and Oak Hall than these places. That is largely why the liberal bias falls flat to me.

Interesting that you choose to use childish insults to respond to my post...a simple attempt to toss out a bit of enlightened reason in an emotionally-charged situation in the Memphis area I'm proud to call home.

What I particularly find enlightening is that you seem to summarily dismiss some of the ideas presented by Dr. Sowell, perhaps one of the greatest economic thinkers in American history.

Oh, and not that it matters, but I do own weapons and I'm trained to use them should the need arise.

That's his MO and he simply doesn't know better. When he can't find something intelligent to say in response he spews insults and demonstrates further childish behavior. Most of his 1500+ post (in 13 months I might add) consist of the same thing.

You are right. If you point a gun at someone and pull the trigger, you have no idea if you killed them or not. That act alone makes someone a murderer. So, how can you support a newspaper that does?

This. A group of people met in public in downtown. A reporter covered it. She got some quotes from the people there. I guess I missed the part where the DM was supporting anybody in particular, but people want to blame the paper for something. Bottom line - it is't Tiger related.

they gave these "community leaders" a megaphone and credibility, the writer never even questioned their hate filled diatribes that will do nothing to help the Frayser community.

You called the violent protesters "shenanigan doers", don't @ me about childish wordings.

And what does an economist know about society, culture, or violent protests?

Exactly nothing.

His quotes are null and void on this subject but you knew that.

Miss me with your straw man defense.

And since you have weapons and know how to use them, you will be good and ready when ten AR 17's kick in the front door and start shooting.

Hey genius, who is siding with the "shenanigan doers"?

One of these days it will be your front porch, you ready?

Interesting that you choose to use childish insults to respond to my post...a simple attempt to toss out a bit of enlightened reason in an emotionally-charged situation in the Memphis area I'm proud to call home.

What I particularly find enlightening is that you seem to summarily dismiss some of the ideas presented by Dr. Sowell, perhaps one of the greatest economic thinkers in American history.

Oh, and not that it matters, but I do own weapons and I'm trained to use them should the need arise.

You want to know what's immature?

Some dude thinking he can defend himself with a pistol or a shotgun against a few dudes with ARs.

That's like a kid pretending to be the Hulk or Iron Man.

Good luck with that.

Wow...just wow. 03-lmfao
