RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
Appears the UC admin has dropped the ball and screwed up the prospect of the getting Harvey. Harvey just stopped following UC on Twitter. Hopefully Hardnett leaving was not related.

Sorry to hope that did not happen. If Harvey is a no go, you need to use the scholarship on a big for this year. Even if its just another one rental.

Definitely seeming like Harvey to UC isn't going to happen. Either something with Harvey's grades or concerns over his criminal record. I don't think what he did should even be a crime, but I could see concerns about it being a slippery slope of us going after high-rated guys with checkered pasts.
At this point, I think you just hold onto the scholarship and use it for 2020. By the time we got a new player in, they will have already missed a month of practices and quite possibly more than that. Brannen seems unconcerned about our lack of big men for next year (we will be playing a lot of 4 guard lineups I assume), so I doubt he'd scramble for one this late. It seems like the only viable option (besides Harvey) for adding someone who could contribute this year would be to get Hardnett to stay.

Hardnett probably seen the future and thought he might be better to move on to a smaller program. He'll be fine wherever he goes and so will UC.

RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
For those who are still interested in his story, LaQuill Hardnett is transferring to Buffalo. Should be a good fit for him.

No offense to Hardnett and Johnson, but the programs they ended up transferring to speaks volumes about the level of recruiting by the previous head coach.
There is no way UC should have been recruiting the same talent level that Buffalo gets.

And a very good defensive team - reminded me a lot of UC. Probably fits what Hardnett was looking for. New coach was the assistant to Oates, the outgoing new Alabama coach. The system probably won't change much.

Yep, even though Buffalo has had a few good teams, that coach is gone if I'm not mistaken. At the end of the day it's still the MAC. Far from high major basketball by anyone's definition.
Those who suggested UC was under performing on the recruiting trail of late have had their opinions validated simply by examining the transfer destinations of Mick's former players.

And from all the sites I've seen, St. Mary's is a consensus top 25 team next year with only 2 seniors on it. They seem to make the tourney more times than they miss it.

Both are good programs that have won tournament games in recent years.

I mean, the probable starters on next year's team (Lojo and Brooks) went to very good programs in Saint Mary's and Miami. Samari Curtis wound up at Nebraska. The others (Fredericks, Hardnett, Nsoseme) all likely would have been back ups next season anyways and wound up at smaller programs.
While I agree there are a number of reasons why Brannen can bring in better talent than Mick, I don't think the landing spots of the transfers is an indicator of that.

No disrespect to this statement but by that logic, UC should be recruiting against NKU and NM. Sorry, I don't find that acceptable especially if you're promising a new exciting brand of ball.
Don't get me wrong, I support the Bearcats and CJB 100%, just wanted to point out the logical inconsistency. Mick made a call, let him live with it and let us move on -- hopefully to bigger seasons and deeper tourney runs -- but we need to move on.

RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
I think Hardnett will eventually be a nice player. But swapping him out for Zach Harvey is an obvious upgrade, especially in Brannen's system. Only two players I would have rather kept are Logan Johnson and Nysier Brooks, who I would take over McNeal and Sorella without hesitation. But CJB did an amazing job given the circumstances and aside from being a bit short on inside depth, the roster came out no worse for the wear and we even upgraded a couple of rotation spots with guys like Jaevin Cumberland and Zach Harvey.
