err, do we know that?

I can't guarantee it but do you know of any coach that practiced the auto-bench like Mick did?

I don't' miss the auto bench. It cost us the Ohio State game...Jarron should have played more in the first half than he did. Just horrible coaching.

It's pretty widespread in college. Kenpom actually tracks it: 2-foul participation rate. A lot of good coaches subscribe to it.

I'm not completely sure, but I'm fairly certain they're referring to MC auto-benching people when they do one thing wrong during a game.

I don't think they are talking about the two-foul bench, but rather the one-mistake bench.

I don’t know that Cronin would bench you for missing shots. But he would for ****** defense or turnovers. Trevor Moore gotta grow up out there no matter who the coach is. Hopefully he has a nice sneeze and clears the bat **** from his sinuses.

Really hate to see Hardnett go. Of the two red-shirts, I thought he had the most potential. We are going to be really thin up front this season. Trevon Scott is going to have to stay out of foul trouble and give us 30 minutes a night or else we are going to get abused inside.

Well, exactly. There have been rumors about a 2019 reclass for Harvey and then this happens. With how quickly those crystal balls came out of the blue, you begin to see all the stars lining up.

don't worry too much. Prince Toyambi was one of the better players on the team last year in practices. I'm looking for some quality minutes that he will provide next season.

Moore was always thinking and not playing which leads to second guessing and lost confidence. Maybe he never puts it together.

The two fouls autobench strategy is dumb. I think Coach K even said that playing players with two fouls in the first half and taking two for one at the end of first half are two simple winning tactics. Basically it’s about maximizing your possessions with your best players.

To be honest I had no idea we even had Hardnett on the roster. I am guessing he took a redshirt last season. 3 out of 4 of our 2018 recruits are now gone. This roster has turned over extremely fast.

I was really interested to see how the same roster looked with a new coach, but I suppose it's better this way.

Nah, he'll get a waiver...I don't see us doing anything other than supporting him there, and this is essentially what Tate Martell did in football and ended up with a waiver for it.

Coach Huggins. I remember one game when James White made a mistake on the defensive end. As he runs by the UC bench he sees Huggs getting his replacement off the bench. White calls for the ball and drives straight to the basket. He made the bucket.

If we're talking benching players for mistakes to send a message, every coach will do it from time to time. However, as far as autobench, Mick was in a class few coaches are in. For example, using 2 fouls in the first half as the measure, Mick's players were 351 out of 353 in minutes played with 2 or more first half fouls. Just since you used Huggs as the comparison, Huggs' team was 148 in 2 foul participation.

RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
Mick’a autobench program was just horrible policy. Cost us several games. Might have had some wiggle room if he had a team of scorers in a dynamic offense but when you are offensively challenged with a shallow bench and projects and THEN pull your only legit scoring option- you’re hosed.

See UC vs O$U last year.

I recall that Tony Bennett was one of the worst offenders as well. Beilein was another. It can be frustrating, and coaches should not be wedded to it, but it's not an unfounded strategy or the mark of a terrible coach.

It's bad strategy, but yes there are good coaches who still seem pretty wedded to it. It's one part of the game you are handicapping yourself with, particularly if its a key player. It doesn't come into play that often for many teams, but if it's a key player and a big drop off to the backup it can be killer. With Virginia the big advantage they had is the two guys that committed a lot of fouls were basically interchangeable big men (Huff/Salt) and neither were in their best 5 by the time the tournament came around. Virginia and Michigan are both near the bottom of the country in foul rate every year so that 2 foul participation issue doesn't end up hurting them that often even when there is a big dropoff, because its so rare.

With UC last year Maximizing Cumberland's minutes against a team like OSU was essential to winning that game. Him sitting 17 minutes in the first half was just brutal when he was the only returning major contributor in the first game, with no real backup.

A 4-point deficit became a quick 9 and pretty much stayed that way over the course of the game after Cumberland committed his 2nd foul of that first half.

Sending a message to foul-prone/younger players is one thing but doing so in a game where points are at a premium with a playmaking upperclassman who's fouled out all of TWO TIMES over the course of his career is simply stubbornness.
