RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
There's almost no doubt in my mind we are going to see the highest scoring Cincinnati team in a long time. Hopefully we can do so without giving up too much on the defensive end and glass.

No kidding. Here is our projected roster if we land Harvey as a 2019 commit:

Chris McNeal ----------- SR 6-1 190 Point Guard
Mika Adams-Woods ---- FR 6-3 175 Combo Guard
Jarron Cumberland ----- SR 6-5 205 Wing
Jaevin Cuberland ------ SR 6-3 185 Wing
Keith Williams --------- JR 6-5 210 Wing
Trevor Moore ---------- JR 6-5 195 Wing
Zach Harvey ----------- FR 6-4 170 Wing
Jeremiah Davenport --- FR 6-5 205 Wing
Prince Gillam ----------- FR 6-7 225 Forward
Mamoudou Diarra ------ SO 6-9 215 Forward
Trevon Scott ----------- SR 6-8 225 Power Forward
Jaume Sorolla --------- SR 7-0 240 Center
Chris Vogt ------------- JR* 7-1 240 Center

Not very difficult to see what position Brannen wants to emphasize in his system...

When all is said and done, the amount of attrition Brannen faced in the first month might wind up being a boon for him. Instead of trying to fit square pegs in round holes (Hardnett, Nsoseme, Brooks to a degree), he was able to comb the marketplace and add several players that fit his system so he can start doing what he wants to do in year 1 instead of having to wait until year 2 or 3 after he had a couple of recruiting cycles to bring players in.

There's going to be growing pains, sure, but I'd have to think Brannen is happier with the roster listed above than what he might have had if several players from last season's roster were still on the team.

Very true. I wish we could have held onto Brooks, but aside from that, it seems like most of the attrition has been replaced with guys of equal or better talent who fit better in Brannen's system. Luckily Scott has proven he can play 30 minutes without foul trouble (only had 4 fouls or more 3 times last season) so we shouldn't have to rely on Sorolla and Gillam for more than spot minutes. And if Diarra makes a year 3 leap, we'll be in even better shape.

I agree on all of this, and let's keep in mind that three veterans - namely Cumberland, Scott, and Williams - have made this quick switch in systems possible. Cumberland is such a skilled scorer, Scott a leader, and Williams a guy that fits the new system that Brannen is assured some degree of success in year one while he positions the team for year two and beyond.

I'm against pushing kids out. I don't blame Brannen much, though. He didn't bring the kid here, and it's his career and this is big business. It's tough. The timing sucks. Hope Hardnett finds a good spot this late.

I've seen enough defense over the last 10 years to last me a life time. So I'm good.

I'm making book on who starts that thread. It won't anybody who ever griped about Mick's failings as a coach.

It might be me 02-13-banana I love Mick's defense. His offense drove me crazy at times, but he's a top-5 or top-10 defensive mind.

I always said that Mick's defense is so good that if he could have an average offense, he'd compete for Final Fours.

Couldn’t stop very good offenses or defend the three. I wasn’t too happy with UC’s defense in recent NCAA tournament games or against Xavier for the most part. Really good offenses usually destroyed UC in the second half. For the most part 2018 had elite defense but still struggled against Nevada, Xavier, and in the first Wichita game. Those were all elite offenses and great teams. For the most Mick’s shutdown everyone else but you need to game plan to beat the best not just the rest.

RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
I know our expectations are going to be high next year, which is a good thing. I hope if things don't go perfect, we have people stay grounded.

I don't know if Brannen will win because we haven't seen him coach at this level. But one thing I can definitely say, is that he is able to pitch talented players to come play in his system. That raises our ceiling if nothing else. I think that's got people excited and it really should.

Outside of 2017-2018, I haven't been this excited for UC basketball in quite a while...

I'm against pushing guys out, but hopefully that's not what happened here. Pushing Hardnett out makes little sense, we were already looking like an undersized team with Hardnett. I know people say Prince will play the 4, but Prince is only 6'5" (Look at the team photos, not his listed height), Hardnett was a clear 6'8". Harvey (assuming he's reclassifying to 2019) is going to join a logjam at the guard/forward position, you'd think if we were going to force someone out it would be someone who is part of the logjam (Moore being the obvious choice). Hopefully we will learn more in the coming days. Even though Harvey looks excellent, I don't think it's a good look for the program to push guys out this late in the year (hopefully that's not what happened).

If I was a player that did not have the skill set for the type of required play, where I would just be sitting the bench or just getting a few minutes, I would want to know that so I could find a program with a greater need for my skill set.

Maybe the fact that Moore is staying means that Brannen sees potential in him.

RE: Hardnett in the transfer portal
It's possible Coach sat Hardnett down and just leveled with him, "You and your skill set are not going to be a good fit for my system."

That would be honest and the right thing to do for the program and for the player.

Hardnett was another Mick project: most likely good defender with limited offensive skills. That isn't going to work in Brannen's system.

So IF Coach had that discussion with Hardnett, it really isn't 'pushing him out'. It's just having the guts to have an honest conversation and in the end, both sides win.

Wouldn't that conversation have happened much earlier than now?

I don't really fault Brannen here, but I don't think this sounds like some benevolent move by him either. Seems like he needs a spot now and Hardnett is the odd man out. I just hope he doesn't make a habit of it.

I doubt Brannen "forced" a player off the team. That said, all bets are off during a coaching transition.

I'd wager Moore will play with more confidence in Brannen's system since he knows he won't get the auto-yank after his first sneeze.
