They played it at the Student Center while I was there as well, early 80's

Steve Goodman played one year for homecoming in the early 70's back when we were a basketball powerhouse. Roberta Flak played another year. I also remember listening to some outstanding folk music at Juicy John Pinks Coffee House .

"Another event that has grown in hindsight, particularly for those who missed it, took place in October 1991. For $15, students saw the Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and a special guest. Current CAB members said the band to be announced later was Pearl Jam, which was added to the bill just a few weeks prior to the show."

Where was I for this? No recollection. 03-drunk

The Pumpkins came back in the late 90's and played at Duke Ellington, and Corgan talked about that show. Pretty cool. I remember seeing Local H a few times, Sponge and a few others. At that time, there weren't a ton of big acts at Otto's, mainly covers.

RE: NIU Convo
I feel like there's been a lot of country and rap acts recently. Any good rock or pop groups go through Dekalb in the last 6-7 years?

**Glad to read this week (from L.A.) that Illinois colleges are funded on time this year, and NIU getting a 5% increase in budget from last year. Money still very tight I'm sure, but a real step in the right direction.

The problem is the state does not have the money. Still a huge budget deficit.

RE: NIU Convo
The Convo would need to be able to draw lots of people from the western suburbs to events to be successful. Unfortunately with other facilities like the Allstate Arena, Sears Center, Rockford, etc. the Convo has competition from other venues I don’t see how it could overcome. Event venues are also having their own financial woes filling their schedules, meaning the Sears Center and others has plenty of capacity for drawing events away from the Convo. Further, we can only get like 7% capacity for men’s basketball games.

I just don’t see what value there is in Convo naming rights, and that’s why we haven’t and may not see any naming rights.

Don't forget this one just down the road in Naperville. Link/story from early 2018. Don't know status. Seems mainly for ice hockey, but they talk about a lot of other events, and a later update I saw shows a revision to seat 6,000 for other events. CityGate is located in downtown Naperville, about 2 miles south of I-88. NIU's conference/campus center is just south of I-88 and a bit east.
