Thoughts on Non-Conference Football Home and Home Scheduling w/P5 Teams
Over on the conference board and the main college sports/realignment board there are numerous threads and posts with regard to scheduling Non-Conference 2 for 1 vs. 1 for 1 home games with P5 teams. Depending on the G5 school, some feel you should never schedule a 2 for 1 and others say that you take what you can get along with the money payouts. In particular, some of our conference mates have recently announced 2 for 1 scheduling [Memphis, USF, SMU]. I never really thought about it much from Cincinnati's perspective because we have played mostly 1 for 1's over the past decade and [will play] beyond.

Consider Cincinnati's P5 home and home scheduling since the Big East Days...

Oregon St 2007/2009
Oklahoma 2008/2010 [Home Game @PBS]
Illinois 2009/2013
North Carolina St 2010/2011
Purdue 2013/2016
Miami, FL 2014/2015
UCLA 2018/2019
Nebraska 2020/2025
Indiana 2021/2022
Pitt 2023/2024

I realize our membership in the Big East was considered a BCS/Power Conference at the time but it does show that we have been consistent in scheduling Non-Conference home and home games against "power" teams. What are your thoughts on this? Should Cincinnati ever schedule a 2 for 1?

The right two for ones are better than one off games vs Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame.

I would offer them reverse two Toledo, Ohio, and a few other schools too.

Basketball the same thing.

In a power conference you don’t play every name team at home so i few two for ones as smart creative scheduling.

We can’t look at our scheduling in the Big East era towards the model going forward. Heck we can’t even look back to games we scheduled three years ago. P5 schools have figured out we need them, and I think going forward the 2-for1 deals is the best we will get.

I'm fine with a 2-for-1 with OSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc. Has to be a top tier program, preferably one in our region that will generate a lot of interest. Only problem with those kinds of 2-for-1's if we even get them would be they would likely want the game in Cincinnati at PBS. In that case, I would prefer a home-and-home like the one we did with Oklahoma in 2008/2010. I don't think we should ever take a buy game or a 2-for-1 with a non-blueblood or a blueblood who has underperformed recently (such as Miami or Nebraska).

I agree that if the trend turns to reality for all non-P5 programs then we will have no choice. For now, it would seem Cincinnati [and others] carry enough weight to continue to schedule home and homes. I don't believe we would take a 2 for 1 against Vanderbilt, Iowa St., Rutgers, Washington St., Syracuse, et al., but Notre Dame, Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, Michigan, et al. is a different animal.

Here is the list of programs I would do a 2-for-1 or a buy game with:

Ohio State
Michigan
Notre Dame
Penn State
Clemson
Georgia
Alabama
Texas
Oklahoma

There are a few others that are acceptable if the deal is right, such as Florida, FSU, Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M and USC. But never Vanderbilt or Louisville like some of our conference brethren are scheduling.

I would never do a 2-for-1 with a team in a conference we are hoping to be invited into in the future. That would be like admitting we do not belong.

I actually would look into games against Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, Wisconsin, WVU, and a few others in the two for one category besides the elite brands. I am looking for schools in the region that UC has some history or connection. I think you take the buy money for the third game and bring in a MAC school on a two for one. Basically play two home agiant Toledo and one road. Two road against Michigan State and one home. Creates a mini rivalry, easy road game travel, and good SOS.

Hell no on UK, Louisville, or WVU. I'd entertain MSU and Wisconsin, but I agree that it should be reserved for the elites. Toledo, for some reason, is able to get some damn good home-and-homes. I doubt they'd bite. I would look at 2-for-1 with schools like Buffalo, OU (already have a home and home), and Western Michigan (Bell's, Founders, etc. tour).

UofL, UK and WVA should all be 1 for 1 or no way. Those programs aren't big enough to warrant 2 for 1 or ''buy games". Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see them on the schedule, but home and home only.

RE: Thoughts on Non-Conference Football Home and Home Scheduling w/P5 Teams
All three of these 2 for 1 series

USF and Florida
Memphis and Arkansas
SMU and Vanderbilt
Are all special series, ie. for recruiting reasons.
Florida wants to recruit Tampa better so they don´t lose players like Nicholas Petit-Frere again.
Arkansas wants to recruit Memphis area players. Ark-Memphis does not count as a series they only started playing in 1992. Memphis has never played in Fayetteville.
I think the Bearcats have a problem, a lot of teams don´t want to play UC anywhere.
Louisville, Kentucky, Rutgers, Minny never has played UC but they have a recruiting camp in Wilmington OH. Mich St., UCLA after August, Penn State, Wisky, Iowa, VaTech, Purdue, Northwertern. WV.
All these schools have on thing in common.
They all recruit against the Bearcats.

https://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.co...ing-issue/

This article says that UCF is the only AAC team that won´t schedule 2 for 1s

If we can get a home and home with Pitt, there is NO way that we should ever, ever, in a million freakin' years demand anything less than a home and home with Louisville. Pitt is Louisville's superior in every way, excepting a willingness to sell their soul to the devil for some athletic success. If they're willing to treat UC as something of an equal, there's no reason that glorified community college in Louisville should expect something better.

Is U6 still accredited? I thought they were close to losing their accreditation.

Only 2 for 1s against teams we don't recruit against. Lower tier P5 programs like UK or IU would not be acceptable as we go head to head with them on recruits and beat them frequently. A 2 for 1 would could be used against us in recruiting to show us as inferior.

We should continue to offer a home-and-home basketball series as an inducement to do 1-for-1 football games.

P5 programs with crappy basketball teams like USC, Arizona State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Clemson, Minnesota, etc would be ecstatic to get Cincinnati to come play at their basketball arena.

I'm on the record as bring OK with 2-1's with the "power" 5 teams as long as their cutting a visitor's check that's worth the trouble.

I guess my sticking point is what becomes of that third date if you hold out and get that 1-1. Who are you playing in the spot that would have been the third game against the P5 ? Alabama A&M? Delaware St.? Austin Peay?

Me... I'd rather play an extra away game against a Purdue than pound my chest at what tough guys we are as we're running out of the tunnel for a home game against Towson St.

I understand what you are saying, but on the flip-side it is imperative to have at least six home games to show in front of your fans. Back in the 80s and early 90s (before CUSA) UC used to take the money and go play schools like Bama, Florida State and the U on the road for the cash. As a result they would only have 4-5 home games which I believe played a factor in limiting the number of fans we had.
