RE: 6 NCAA schools to get Level 1 notice of allegations this summer
I have to admit, as knowledgeable as I am and with all of my sources, I was happy when Josh and Tubby were hired, I also thought Larry Porter was a good hire.
Josh a decent Dude, who could recruit as could Larry, however neither one were good coaches.
Tubby is a good coach, but he was a tough disciplinarian and I don't think the entitled react well to this type of coaching. Now if Tubby was recruiting players that he going 2 per class in the NBA, his discipline would
Be welcomed. Tubby can coach, he just couldn't recruit the players he needed
The above didn't work, but the word on the Street is
Penny can coach, recruit and above all win a whole lotta non CUPCAKE games and he is all business
And his players know it.

I don't hammer everything you say, BUT C'MON MAN!

Are you serious?

You've seen him up close and personal. Can you still say that confidently? Are you basing it on the ESPN talking heads? Or on winning Pitino's 'ship at Kentucky-the land of infinite resources (including NCAA)?

He's been close enough to your eyes to have given you a fair assessment of your own. Is he really a good coach? Or is that just something you've heard said before?

RE: 6 NCAA schools to get Level 1 notice of allegations this summer
I did think the Dude was a good coach, he's aging out now, it happens to everybody regardless of business.
He wants to keep coaching, I think the Dude just likes to coach, I think he's at high point, good place to retire from and I hope he does well. I never said he was a great coach and he would not of been a top 5 pick IN my. Opinion.
However, Josh had a mess going on, so I didn't have a problem bringing in Tubby.
If u look at my past comments, I've been pushing to hire Penny for a couple of years, even pointed out JTI
Came from high school to Georgetown . My theory is Penny is a well respected Memphis resident and arguably the best player to wear a Tiger uniform. I pointed out he would do well in recruiting, how'd that work out, and his coaching experience was certainly decent with his any and h.s. records

Tubby's an outstanding disciplinarian, tactician, and teacher of the game...but he made a critical mistake that cost him 3 high level local recruits when he demoted Keelon Lawson...then he really exasperated the situation by hiring his kid to be asst coach.

I think a lot of the complaints about Tubby's lazy recruiting would be moot if he had Dedric, KJ, and Chandler Lawson all on board to go along with Jamal Johnson, David Nickleberry, Myreon Jones, etc.

JMHO.

The fact remains that whether Tubby was the second coming of John Wooden (who relied on a mega booster to get his recruits until it snowballed on its own), he was not a good fit for the Tiger job. We needed a dynamic PR coach (sell tickets) , a great recruiter and a decent to good coach. It was all about $$ at that point and admin couldn’t see it but some longtime Tiger fans/boosters could.

I was dead set against the Tubby hire as were a few local media who understood the Memphis job. It turned into a $40M mistake. But PH likely will be able to turn that into a positive number by 2021.

While Josh and Tubby were bad hires for Memphis, there's no way you can compare either to the debacle that was the Larry Porter era at Memphis. The guy simply had no clue how to run a football program.

Josh seemed to have trouble with coaching and then overreacting to provide course correction.

Tubby just didn't care. He was here to smile, wave, and cash a check. Plain and simple.

just as Tic lead to Cal...Tubby has lead to Penny...I just hate it cost us so much money this time.

Well, I for one will go on record, again, as saying that was a screwed up deal to begin with and I do not agree with hiring Keelon simply as a means to get his sons.

Thanks Josh, you babbling idiot.

Tubby was the idiot.

Josh, as bad as he was and he was horrible, didn't want to hire Keelon just to get his sons.

KJ was already a verbal at least.

Josh was forced, coerced into "hiring" Keelon.

The University hired Keelon.

I don't know about that. Josh hired Keelon to save his job. His recruiting was slipping and (not un-related), players were transferring in droves. He was "forced" into hiring him...to save his job.

And that's why it ultimately didn't work. Keelon had leverage and the whole family knew it. Tubby came, and didn't respect Keelon's leverage any longer.

Today, imagine Keelon trying to leverage Penny. Ain't happening.

You are conveniently leaving out the part where Bowen promised Keelon that he would have a bench coach position. ADs must honor their promises as the whole athletic department is dependent upon his honesty in scheduling, negotiating and all the tasks that an AD has.

It was, as always, about the money. Tubby could have taken us to NCAA tournament and not put as many people in the seats as Penny.

An unique opportunity presented itself to Dr Rudd and they made hard decision to fire a maybe HOF coach after his 2cd year here. As he said “it’s not my job to sell tickets”. We got zero PR from Tubby because he was de facto retired letting Saul run the team.

Except he was getting paid like 1mil a year for pr and media. So actually selling tickets was part of the job he was hired to do.

Something is wrong with you two, Tubby is a perennial LOSER.

The people who hired him were stupid.

They still are, but they realize that now, and let others make their decisions for them.

Tubby Smith is a LOSER.

A rich loser but still a loser and an idiot.

The University hired Keelon.

Why do we not use search firms for basketball, the way we hired Fuente? The hiring of Josh Pastner out of some desperate attempt to keep Xavier Henry killed us.

Follow that up with a reactionary hire of ‘the opposite of Pastner’ and that killed us.

Thankfully, The Penny hire is working, but I think that his hiring is more good luck than good athletic administering.

Well, my guess is Calipari told RC to hire Josh, and Josh to accept, he didn't want that goof following him to UK.

Just took him a year to figure it out.

Cal and Josh are still very close.
Cal has told Josh that he has a job open for him at UK anytime.
When he has a brand to promote...he is a relentless recruiter who knows his stuff.
