She is a single, childless woman and it is extremely simple to pack up and move wherever. She doesn't have to worry about time, extra mouths to feed, a spouse and their potential employment, schools, or anything else. My point is for people that do. The argument that because AOC herself could have easily made the move is moot. I want Joe the Plumber with 5 kids in congress. The current paradigm does not allow for this. Maybe keeping the salary the same and giving them a 1BR apartment on Capitol Hill would work. Then they can at least maintain their quality of life at home. and not have to move their families to the swamp. They'd still be away from their families a lot, but at least the salary combined with covered expenses would make that a more appealing tradeoff. I don't think some of you have any idea what it costs. I saw $2,000 mentioned... that won't even get you a decent 1 BR in Arlington or Fairfax, much less DC.

Hear, here. My point exactly.

Someone earlier mentioned barracks for Congress members. I think family housing like some military bases have is more appropriate for members of Congress. And they should be available as soon as their election is certified so that they can set up their office and be ready to start work on Day 1.

This line of thinking is a mystery to me. Does anyone here believe Joe the plumber wouldn’t take that job? Bullchit!

The fact is if Joe the plumber could wrestle this job from an incumbent he would at some time come back to his district a rich man. Or woman in AOC’s case.

Incorrect. You have to already have money to get rich off the graft. You have to invest $1M to make $10M on insider knowledge of cattle futures. Joe the Plumber is trying to make ends meet. He can't make that investment. Now he could get rich illegally, but you need to invest to take advantage of the legal congressional scams.

No. I’m sorry you are incorrect. They had to get rid of their insider trading scheme when it was brought to the light of day. They have other ways to enrich themselves that are yet to get the scrutiny of the people who elected them.

Once again I ask anyone here to point out one congressman or senator who has returned to their district a poorer man than when he was elected.

Also immediately enact term limits: 2 terms for Senators and 4 terms for House members.

Yes on the first one but the second one will never happen in our lifetime.

can Someone enlighten me on the pay scales? If you are Pelosi or Warren or any other multi term congressmen do you make more than a freshmen congressman? Or do they all make the same amount?

It all boils down to Congress (the employee) giving themselves pay raises. In what other job anywhere, does the employee vote whether or not to give themselves pay raises without any consent from the employer (American voters).

Put this to a national vote. Congress approval ratings usually hover in the 10-15% approve range. Good luck getting a raise. Do some work and than let us (the people/employers) decide.

Additionally, this whole nonsense of how they can't afford this, that or the other in DC on their $175k salary is exhausting. So then their argument drifts towards, "pay us better money or we'll commit white collar crime" to make up the difference. Except, that white collar crime isn't just paying to keep the lights on. These jack-wagons are turning into millionaires and multi-millionaires on $175k salaries over the course of becoming career politicians.

Maybe, just maybe they should stop flying/driving/riding back and forth from their home state to DC and vice versa. It's 2019, it's fairly easy for them to maintain the pulse of their constituents while remaining in DC. Find ways to make it work. Travel costs are probably their biggest $$$ item in terms of costs of being a politician.

Lastly, they weren't forced to run for office. They knew, and should reasonably have understood the expectation of office prior to running for it to include the salary and costs. If they can't handle it, than they're unfit for the office.

Most of them make the same, with exceptions for positions such as House Speaker, etc.

If they all basically get paid the same amount, they why aren't all the others crying poverty?

These people are actually not stupid.... NONE of them would be lifetime politicians of they were losing money on an annual basis. They would serve a term or two - which would be admirable and honorable (that is, to take that job knowing you cannot support yourself entirely for the betterment of your fellow countryman).

I have only heard of one career in which you can vote a raise for yourself - and that is a politician (whether it is State or Federal)..... It really should be up to your boss as to whether you get a raise - clearly these people don't want to leave that decision to their boss - the voters..... Getting elected is not much of a problem, but getting a raise would be much more difficult as they would have to actually show some results....
