That said...I think running the score up on Thailand was uncalled for and bad sportsmanship. Celebrating goals 7-13 like they did looks like rubbing it in. There's no reason to flat out embarrass an obviously overmatched opponent.
Poor form by the Women's Team.

Sorry, but I'm going to disagree...

There's a huge debate on this in the blogging world right now.

For some of these girls, they're in their FIRST ever world cup, it's a dream for some of these ladies to score a World Cup goal, their first and you don't want them to celebrate it?

A) You can only play who's in front of you. And let's not forget the score at the end of the first half was "only" 3-0.

B) The whining about the celebrations... REALLY? Do I get mad when a NFL player celebrates something when they do well against my favorite team? Sure... now it's up to my team to try to keep them from scoring and doing it again, or do something to prevent it (see Teague, George/Owens, Terrell).

I don't see Boston Bruins fans crying about the fact they celebrated an "unneeded" 5th goal Sunday in the Stanley Cup contest.

Do I feel for the Thai girls? Sure.. they were outmatched and outmatched badly, but am I going to criticize the girls on the US team? Nope...

Goal Scorers: Alex Morgan (5), Rose Lavelle (2), Lindsey Loran (1), Samantha Mewis(2), Megan Rapinoe(1), Mallory Pugh(1), Carlli Lloyd(1).

So maybe other than Alex getting the 4th one at the 87 minute mark (heck, a hat-trick is a big deal in soccer too, you know).. who do you want to tell that scored a goal, she couldn't celebrate?

If you score a goal then good for you, but there's an old saying..."act like you've been there before."

Not to mention, in soccer, a 3-0 or 4-0 score is considered a pretty thorough routing. After that point, you need to chill out a little bit and not draw attention to yourself.

I'm not saying that the US team should've tried real hard not to score, but when you outmatch your opponent that badly then you need to tone down the celebrating. It's a matter of professionalism and respecting your opponent. I mean, if I go down to the little league park and smash a couple of homers off a kid then it's perfectly reasonable for me to celebrate, right? No, the level of competition matters.

And there's this...if they get beat in the next couple of matches then all that hoopla is going to look pretty stupid don't you think? Instead of celebrating a 9th goal or whatever, how about focusing on the prize? This tournament is far from over.

That was Hope Solo, the former goalie, who got suspended from the team a few times. She is not currently on the team and has not had anything good to say over the past few years. Just trying to extend her time in the spotlight.

Completely different... You're not on the same "organization" as the little league kid.

Thailand is FIFA, just like US/Germany/Spain/England etc. Admittedly they've got different levels of backing from their area-based federation but they're under the same flag.

Yep... And that's on the ladies to deal with if it happens... and they'll have to live down the consequences.

So you didn't love PrimeTime struttin' his way to the end zone on a pick? The issue is that despite going through the qualification process to end up in the World Cup, the difference between the top 10 women's team and everyone else is a massive chasm. It will close over team much like USA men's basketball and the rest of the world, but this was essentially the Dream Team v. Angola.

It's an extreme example, but not completely different. If you outmatch your opponent so completely then you need to be cognizant of that.

We're not talking about celebrating a TD when you're up by 10 or something like that. This is more equivalent to one team beating another 100 to 0 in football. At some point, you just make yourself look foolish by pretending you're in the middle of a great accomplishment.

Thailand may be FIFA, but they clearly don't belong in the World Cup.

If we're going to use the football analogy: Top college football teams often strut while routing FCS teams, or FBS teams that are extremely overmatched. The sports media doesn't complain about Alabama or Oklahoma football players celebrating touchdowns while they're beating South Dakota 77-3.

I've chilled out a little bit as I've aged, but I'm still old school for the most part. Unless it's a game winner or something then don't make too big a deal of it. 04-cheers

But yeah, I completely agree with your analogy.

Maybe I've just missed it, but I don't remember a lot of that against FCS squads and the like.

I mean, if Alabama is up 50-0 on Western Carolina and the player is acting like it's a big deal then I'm perfectly fine with criticizing that guy.
