I think people mistake their desire for independence as arrogance or something. I don’t hear anybody saying “Army needs to join a conference. BYU needs to join a conference.” It’s ridiculous.
People say that about BYU all the time, that they need to join the MWC, PAC, Big 12, or AAC. As for Army, well, I mean, remember Army's last stint in C-USA? I don't feel comfortable wishing something like that on any program, even the ones I don't like.

People like for things to be wrapped up in neat boxes. It’s the same reason people keep pushing for “four super conferences” even though there is no real logical reason for it to happen

RE: Most hated teams in college football
Its okay for every other school to decide for themselves what is in their best interests, except apparently ND.

Syracuse and Pitt leave the Big East for the ACC? Cool.

Missouri decides that leaving the Big 12 for the SEC is great for them? Good for them.

Rutgers leaving the AAC/Big East and joining the Big Ten ? What a great move.

Texas A&M leaving the Big 12 and moving to the SEC ? Wow, nice.

Army leaving CUSA to again be a football independent? Understandable.

Notre Dame deciding that football independence is in their best interests?

The arrogant, lousy ba$tards !!! They need to reject what they think is their best option and conform (against their will) to what we want. How dare they act in their own perceived best interests!!!

People think that ND should select something that they don't want and think is the lesser option for them just so everything is all nice and neat.

(How many times have fans of other schools said about events...."THIS will finally FORCE (operative word) Notre Dame football into a conference.")

It is like they think that God ordained that every school had to play football in a conference, or something. There is no Divine Mandate for a cookie cutter, one size fits all setup.

Football conference membership is merely a business decision, nothing more. A possible temporary one at that, given all the conference realignment moves.

In reality, today it is mostly driven by the desire to make the most TV money. ND is not as dependent on TV dollar payouts as many other schools.

There used to be lots and lots of football independents for decades. That changed because, for those schools, conference membership was the wiser business decision.

For ND, that merely is not the case. It has the NBC contract, no local recruiting base, a non-regional fan base spread out across America and a desire to play (and recruit) all over the country.

ND did not put a gun to the heads of the Big East in 1995 and the ACC in 2012 to offer ND a non-football conference membership. Those entities made voluntary business decisions in their own best interests, too.

Self determination and choice is great for everyone but ND, I guess.

So true! I hated Miami so much, I rooted hardcore for Ohio State that season, who I loathe today. Ditto Texas against USC. In retrospect, I feel like a goof having rooted so hard for Texas and OSU.

1st off many times they are undefeated because of a weak schedule, secondly I hate the “The Ohio State” crap, third overall fan arrogance, Brutus (a nut for a mascot, really?) (one of my favorite mascots is the Ohio Bobcat after one took Brutus down), UrbanMeyer and Woody Hayes.

Fair enough, Jjoey52.
I always noticed your hate towards Ohio State and was curious to why?

Ohio State has its share of crap fans, can't disagree with that.

I live in Athens, Ohio and I'm a fan of Ohio University too. The Bobcat tackle was pretty funny!

Weak schedule? I'm not so sure of that? This year they have a weak ooc schedule but I feel Ohio State does usually schedule a strong ooc schedule most years.

Respect your opinions and appreciate your response!

Joey hates everyone east of the Rocky Mountains. If you think his takes on OSU is harsh, you should read his posts about the teams in the AAC.

BTW, I don't like OSU fans for the most part, but you are one of the better ones I have come across (next to my wife, who is an OSU grad).

Thanks for the compliment, not many for anyone on these boards. Good luck to the Bobcats this year.

I wouldn’t hate on the AAC if they didn’t insult all the rest of the G5’s, it is not like I am the only one. The P6 nonsense is really obnoxious. I am starting to like USF and ECU fans, they seem to be a bit more realistic,

RE: Most hated teams in college football
Lessee, as someone born in Columbus, grew up in a county where 9 out of 10 schools in the country league had the Ohio State fight song (I believe the 10th one had Notre Dame's fight song), who went to a handful of games in the Horseshoe when I was young when my Mom was taking classes ... I'm supposed to say That School Up North (but not supposed to say its name).

As a Miami University alumn, I am supposed to say Ohio University. Where my high school band director graduated from, so was where we went to band camp every year. And where my late older brother went to school, so I got to visit on my own a couple of times in my Junior and Senior year in high school ... they had a really great used book store in Athens back then.

As a UTK PhD, and student in Knoxville for six years I am supposed to say Bama. But graduate school just isn't really the same, so it's not required to be the same intensity of hate.

And as a support of my local college, I guess I am supposed to also hate Akron, where my late youngest son briefly went in hopes of playing soccer for a nationally visible school (though he would probably have said Bama since he was much stronger Vols fan than I ever was).

But really, there's an ample supply of hate in the world, I'd rather just cheer for the teams I support and leave the hating for those who reckon there's not enough hate to go around.

I see your points but hate in sports isn't supposed to be taken personally. Though a lot of people do take it very personally. It's not like saying you hate someone simply because of race, religion etc... Hate, or maybe dislike is a better word, is really what makes football so much fun. Can't really imagine rivalry games being much fun if the teams liked each other. Respect though, nothing wrong with hating a team while also respecting them.

I thought this thread was about who are the most hated teams nationally, not who do you personally hate most. To me, those are two totally different questions.

On the one hand, the one that is "the most hated nationally" have to be personally hated by many people personally in order to qualify ...
... but on the other hand, the people on the board may well not be a representative sample.

On the gripping hand, to a large extent the national list will line up closely with a list of the most successful teams of the recent past, sometimes bumped up a bit by a particularly ferocious rivalry.

Hating a school is one reason to love beating them, but not the only one ... you can love beating them without hating them.

I have family that went to Duke, Michigan, and ECU. I love my family, but some of them can be quite obnoxious about their teams. For some reason, the Michigan alums in particular. Maybe that’s why I don’t like those teams. 03-idea

Probably Duke Basketball is the most hated nationally.

Locally in the Bay Area, probably Cal. Everyone who got rejected by UC Berkeley, everyone who is at a Cal State, and everyone who is not true believing leftist hates Cal.

Funny thing is this never applies to any individuals you meet from the school, just the abstract of the school and then focused on sports.

T shirt fans are generally the worst as a rule. Actual grads are usually pleasant and reasonable across most fanbases.

There is a thin line between hate and envy...... most don't know the difference.

Most people hate ND (for example) because ND has something that almost every hater team/fan wants for themselves.....

I think in their case it's not as much envy - I'd be much more envious of Alabama than them. Although even then, envy is kind of a strong word, since NIU will never get to that level, but that's okay. We did beat them when we played them. 02-13-banana

Tulane isn't that well liked outside of very specific circles. At least that's what I get from here.

We aren't envied, either.
