I hate the entire Big Ten, though Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State (I say this as one born/raised in Pa.) the most.

And it comes to no surprise that the Big Ten programs you dislike are not only the most successful but most popular. Success breeds contempt.

For most Big Ten fans the animosity with Irish is their persistent insistence at nonconformity. For us it seems a no brainer that a wildly successful Catholic football school be in a conference with the Midwest's (and Northeast's) must successful public schools. ND vs Mich, Mich St, Ohio St, Penn St, Wisc, etc would all be huge television events. But while everyone else zigs the Irish zag.

I totally get the USC rivalry but to me the Big Ten has so much more to offer than playing Stanford, Navy, and then spinning the ACC roulette wheel 5 times

I can't stand t-shirt fans. They act like they have some say in what that University does in all matters. I really like it when they say "we beat so and so, we will never accept that University in our conference and we, we, we". You get the point

Fortunately, most schools don't know who these t-shirt fans are.

Well..........

Football membership in any conference is a non-starter, for one.

Playing nine games against teams mostly in the Midwest does not comport with ND's goals and perceived status as the national, Catholic university in America, for another.

ND thinks that playing nine football games a year in mostly the Midwest "landlocks" or "regionalizes" them.

ND feels that it has the Midwest covered with six home games a year

ND does put much value in regional rivalries, unlike most schools. ND wants to play games all over the country.

ND believes that a conference of big land grant universities is not a good fit, for another.

It thinks that the ACC, with many other private schools, is a better institutional fit.

ND doesn't trust the Big Ten and believes that a conference dominated by Michigan and Ohio State would not be one that would look to ND's best interests, for another.

Would ND get shoved into the Western Division, for instance? That would not fit ND's goals, at all.

ND would rather play Stanford and Southern Cal than Big Ten schools for a number of reasons, California recruiting for one.

ND feels it owes a debt to Navy for saving it from shutting the doors in World War II, and has promised to play Navy every year unless Navy decides to end the series.

Plus, games against Navy allow ND to play games in large NFL stadiums in places like DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey, San Diego, etc., as well as places like Dublin, Ireland. The schools open the 2020 season in Dublin.

There is the deep seated, decades long enmity among ND people towards the Big Ten for Michigan blackballing them in the past and trying to kill its program by trying to get other schools to boycott them.

The Big Ten rejected ND back in the day when ND really wanted conference membership. The thought now is fook them.

The ACC gives ND exposure from Boston to Miami, where ND wants to be.

Finally, ACC membership allows ND football to remain independent, which is a major goal of ND.

For all of these reasons, ND really doesn't want to join the Big Ten in all sports, especially in football.

My previous job our national office was in Franklin, Tennessee. There was an Ole Miss alumnus that filled me in on the Corndog topic. I was once in a conversation online and there was an angry Tiger fan there. I snuck in a picture of a Corndog with a smiling face on it. You would have thought I killed his mother! I tried explaining it was a happy corndog and not an angry one, he wasn't having it.

The link made me laugh when I saw corndog brought up.

Had the B10 added ND, Pitt, Cuse, Rutgers, and BC in 2010 we would of had your east coast markets covered and placed you solidly in the East and given you a bit of a voting block. We probably would have stuck with 8 conference games too to appease you.

Big Ten membership with 8 conference games would give you room to keep USC and the west coast recruiting and probably Navy (tradition and NFL stadia) too. You'd probably have to give up Stanford though.

I get the old animosity with Fielding Yost's Michigan but that hatchet got buried and you played an annual series for a few decades. ND can't keep blaming them.

I don't think ND would find themselves on the wrong side on conference votes. When push comes to shove OSU, PSU, Mich, and ND would probably agree on a lot.

We can't get you in the South for conference games but an 8 game conference schedule would give you a spot to play a southern school OOC.

I get it though. Part of the ND mystique is they always have to feel sought after and wanted. The ACC marriage of convenience gives you that. Big Ten membership would make you just one of the (really well paid) boys.

My BIL, an OSU fan, always says that his second favorite team behind the Buckeyes is whoever is playing Notre Dame that week.

In SEC (and also in the plains and out west) Notre Dame is just not as relevant on a day-to-day basis (with the exception for USC and Stanford fans).

Hate is directed at the folks you see every day. You don't hate someone several states over, hate comes from having a friend/relative/coworker who is an obnoxious fan. My own personal experience, I could see how people could hate Kansas basketball fans, but frankly they are irrelevant to me because I don't know any Kansas fans and my alma mater doesn't play them.

You hit the nail on the head.

If I'm at a bar talking to random fans in say Atlanta or Charlotte or wherever and we're talking college football it's inevitably going to end up being about SEC/ACC schools. If someone brings up Notre Dame you might hear something like "ohh, they got killed by Alabama or Clemson, I think they're overrated" but you'll be far more likely to hear rants about how "Tennessee sucks" or "Auburn paid Cam" or whatever else is the scandal of the day. Notre Dame, Southern Cal, or even an Ohio State or Michigan just isn't going to be on the radar like it is in other places.

Yea if you're in the Midwest you're stuck hearing about TSISB until you want to throw up. Other areas of the country, probably not so much.

TSISB?

"That School In South Bend"....as in these people cannot say or reference "Notre Dame" or "ND", such is the level of their great disgust and disdain.

Ahh, thank you

Here is a map of them, actually I don’t see why Montana hates UW, and if BYU was in the MW they would be in Wyoming also. Out west people cannot stand their arrogance, drama and dirty play.

I'm actually shocked that Ohio State wasn't the most hated team in South Carolina. Despite having never beaten either in state team the Suckeye fans who have left Ohio to move to South Carolina and those who only vacation here have made such an imprint that it spawned stuff like this:

But I understand why South Carolina is up there. They've done more to marginalize every state supported institution that wasn't under the UofSC label and just about as much to marginalize every UofSC institution that wasn't UofSC-Columbia that it's understandable why they are the most hated.

Yeah well, I live in the Republic of Cincinnati.....Just went online to Support our Ribbons.com and ordered a dozen of those ribbons. Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe it’s because I am old school but I don’t hate any school. I’m indifferent, when I turn on a game that doesn’t include any of my teams. I root for two teams: Louisville and SC Trojans. I have had season tickets to both.

You glossed over the whole independence thing, which is very important to ND.

ND would rather have 7 games to schedule than four.

ND doesn't want to give up Stanford to play Iowa or Illinois or Minnesota.

Stanford is the type of school ND wants to play (an ex-president of ND called it ND's "aspirational peer") and allows ND to end the season in California every year.

The ND coaches stay in California to recruit after the Southern Cal/Stanford game each November.

It is also part of the national schedule ND wants.

How was the Big Ten going to add Pitt, Syracuse and BC in 2010 in your scenario when it did not in real life??

ND doesn't want to feel sought after by the Big Ten.

It may come as a shock to you, but at least one school doesn't want to be a full member of the Big Ten, no matter how great you think it is and no matter how much money it pays out.

I don't know why this conversation was brought over to this thread?

ND, Syracuse and Pitt are all happy where they are.

I know I'm perfectly fine with Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers in the BIG.

Fighting Muskie, with all due respect, you're beating a dead horse with this.

Do you really despise the current state of the conference right now?

This:
Ohio State
Michigan
Penn State
Nebraska
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Iowa
Northwestern etc...

That's a really nice conference!

Maybe not as much anymore because they haven’t been very good for a while. However, the most hated team I have ever seen in college football was definitely Miami.

Literally everyone hated them — myself included. In fact, everyone hated Miami so badly that when they were very clearly robbed of the national championship against Ohio State back in 2002 — or whenever it was — nobody said a word about it.

Everyone just pretended like a very marginal defensive pass interference call that came five seconds after the play had ended was completely normal and legitimate.

LOL!

Had that been anyone except Miami or possibly Notre Dame, people would have lost their minds over that absurd call. However, because they had treated everyone else so brazenly disrespectfully for decades, karma came back to bite them in the ass.

It could not have possibly happened to a more deserving program. However, that doesn’t make it right.

So true! I hated Miami so much, I rooted hardcore for Ohio State that season, who I loathe today. Ditto Texas against USC. In retrospect, I feel like a goof having rooted so hard for Texas and OSU.

The Nebraska fan in me says Texas. The mindset they have down there and the horrible attitude both their fanbase and athletic department bring just rub me the wrong way.
The Omaha fan has trouble coming up with someone that's not only depending on a sport, but if I had to I'd say North Dakota for hockey and South Dakota State for everything else. Seeing all the green jerseys stumble and slur their way around the Old Market on North Dakota weekend would be funny if the fans weren't so damn obnoxious, and SDSU has the Summit basically under heel thanks to the Sanford family. SDSU gets all the calls, gets all their games on Midco so they get to run recruiting videos at halftime for their ESPN3 games, and gets home games for the conference tournament.

1st off many times they are undefeated because of a weak schedule, secondly I hate the “The Ohio State” crap, third overall fan arrogance, Brutus (a nut for a mascot, really?) (one of my favorite mascots is the Ohio Bobcat after one took Brutus down), UrbanMeyer and Woody Hayes.

People having an obsession over ND joining a football conference is one of the strangest things in college sports. I hear it almost every time they’re brought up: “Notre Dame needs to join a conference.” Why, genius?

I think people mistake their desire for independence as arrogance or something. I don’t hear anybody saying “Army needs to join a conference. BYU needs to join a conference.” It’s ridiculous.
